If a part of the brain is damaged due to head injury, the patient may experience such kind of abnormalities as delusions and illusions, unrealistic thoughts and speach etc. In some patients the problem resolves its own in course of time, in some others it may need to take a long term (life time in severe cases) medical management including medicines, rehabilitation therapy, psychotherapy etc. It depends on many factors like age and severity of the injury of the patient. Do not loose heart, things will turn positive as time goes on. Keep in touch with and follow the advices of the neuropsychiatrist.

4 Ways To Deal With Mood Swings!

MBBS, DPM (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Thrissur
4 Ways To Deal With Mood Swings!

What are mood swings?
Mood swings are defined as sudden and abrupt changes in mood. These mood swings can sometimes help promote problem solving abilities, but a stronger form of these can be associated to a more complex disorder namely, bipolar disorder that is characterised by the cyclical shift from manic to depressive and vice versa.

What causes mood swings?
There are several things that can trigger mood swings starting from your brain chemistry to substance abuse. The most common cause of moods swings can be-

  1. Abnormal levels of neurotransmitters (NTs) in the brain (ex. Serotonin is majorly responsible for change in moods, changes in emotional state and sleep)
  2. Anabolic steroid abuse
  3. Borderline personality Disorder
  4. Autism or other pervasive developmental disorders
  5. Epilepsy
  6. Premenstrual Syndrome
  7. Schizophrenia
  8. Major depression
  9. Post traumatic stress disorder

How to deal with mood swings?
Mood swings can make life difficult for yourself and those around you as well. It is advisable to keep your mood swings under control in order to get along with your life normally.

  1. Try to remain positive: May be you have had a string of heartbreaks off late or failed interviews, but do not let that define a trend in your life. This can lead to depression and make you upset. Keep your mind open to other possibilities and never lose hope. Hope is something that keeps one going; it gives someone a purpose in life.
  2. Balance your life: Learn to maintain a balance between work and leisure. Don’t make your life all about work, take small breaks to do what you like (perhaps read a book, or play an instrument).
  3. Accept the grey in your life:  “Life is like a box of chocolates”. You will never know what comes your way. It is never just black and white. Learn to accept that life can go a little downhill sometimes, but don’t be too alarmed by that. Enjoy the best and always keep yourself prepared for the worse.
  4. Learn to laugh:  Enjoy and appreciate the little things around you. It might surprise you, if you consciously look around with an open mind, you will see the miniscule things that may make you laugh. Maybe that neighbour you find annoying is actually a fun guy to be with or that aunty who is always badgering you with questions is actually concerned about you. And most of all learn how to laugh at yourself! People have made a career over doing that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. You are more fun than you expected to be. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

1.Take balanced diet with proper combination of carbohydrate, protein and fat. Avoid diet high in saturated fats like red meat, whole milk, butter, cheese, cream, ice cream etc which hampers memory and concentration. Take complex carbohydrates like whole wheat bread, brown rice, oat meal, high fiber cereals, lentils, whole beans etc. Avoid processed foods like pasta, potato etc 2. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables and fruits and drink green tea since they contain anti oxidants which enhance memory 3.Go for regular physical exercise like brisk walking, jogging, cycling etc for 30-45 minutes daily 4.Take some mental exercise like doing cross word puzzle, problem solving exercise, playing chess etc 5.Develop some new hobby and skill like learning music, dancing, playing new game etc 6.Take adequate rest. 7-8 hours of sound sleep in the night is required to remain healthy 7. Avoid alcoholic beverages, caffeinated drink, smoking and consumption of tobacco etc. 8. Develop healthy relationship with friends, relatives, family members for good emotional health 9. Avoid stress, anxiety, depression, agitation, severe physical and mental exertion 10. Focus on one task at a time rather than focusing on multiple task 11. Practice yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercise to calm your mind, control emotion, increase concentration and enhancing memory.

I have anxiety issues and have panic attacks almost every time when I am in a crowd or in a situation to give an exam. My heart starts to beat at a rapid rate and I feel frozen. I cannot move a muscle at that time. It almost feels like my heart is going to stop or I am going to die. At that moment I am not able to breath also. Even the thought of something like this makes my heart pound fast and I feel like I am dying.

Loss of interest, appetite, anxiety, worthlessness, social isolation indicates what?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Loss of interest, appetite, anxiety, worthlessness, social isolation indicates what?
All these are indications of depression, probably due to age and lack of occupation. He needs to feel worthy and may need to talk about a lot of things about his past. He just needs a good listener and something useful to do. He could also do with some travelling and spiritual pursuits. He needs to meet with his peers and socialize some. What about his wife? if she is around, they could visit relatives together, both in town and those living outside. He may find that he is useless in the present scenario of this fast moving world, and that he is insignificant. He may be encouraged to read; and where it is possible, if his health permits, to do some child care with his grand-kids. He can also find some role in any social work organization too. If these are not followed, he may waste away his twilight years and age faster than normal.
