Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. Take care.

Hello Doctor, My father has two elder brothers who live in a nearby town with their respective spouses. All of them are senior citizens who have mostly been unhealthy for the last two decades. They regularly consult doctors but the real problem is inactivity and depression. Now, my father has gone to their place to spend some time with them. Apart from taking them to a doctor, what else can my father do to make them happy and healthy? Also, they have frequent tiffs amongst themselves on trivial issues and they call on my father, who is the youngest of all brothers to solve their issues. My father tries to be neutral while suggesting solutions and they follow his suggestions too, but still, somehow they go back to their depressed, anxious about life, health-and-relationships state. Please suggest.

If they are not receptive or cooperative, then they are suffering and probably getting some gratification from it. Your dad has to follow a technbique of detached attachment: that is, he need not take it to heart if they do not follow his advice and clearly says that to them and functions seriously like that. In time, they will get teh message and either will stop playing games or will take him seriously enough and obey his advice. They are older and so they may be more senile if the age difference is too much. Your dad should not take anything to heart and just be there to continue giving them advice but not worried if they follow it or not.

1) maintain a regular sleep routine go to bed at the same time. Wake up at the same time. Ideally, your schedule will remain the same (+/- 20 minutes) every night of the week. A good sleep hygiene routine promotes healthy sleep and daytime alertness. 2) avoid sleeping during the daytime. It can disturb the normal pattern. 3) avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol near bedtime. While alcohol may speed the onset of sleep, it creates problems in he second half of sleep. 4) exercise can promote good sleep. Exercise should be taken in the morning or late afternoon. Yoga, can be done before bed to help. 5) have a quiet, comfortable bedroom. Set your bedroom thermostat at a comfortable temperature. Generally, a little cooler is better than a little warmer. Turn off the tv and other extraneous noise that may disrupt sleep. Background'white noise' like a fan is ok. If your pets awaken you, keep them outside the bedroom. Your bedroom should be dark. Turn off bright lights. Have a comfortable mattress. 6) avoid heavy meals close to bedtime. 7) ensure adequate exposure to natural light. 8) avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep. Do not think of, or bring your problems to bed. 9) stop using all your digital devices and stop looking at digital screens be it mobile phones or televisions at least 1 hour before the time you plan to sleep. Instead try reading a fiction book near bedtime so it makes you help relaxed and de-stressed. Sleep well live healthy and live longer. If you have tried all these and still have problems, please consult me for prescription medication.

Brain Foods That Help You Concentrate

Brain Foods That Help You Concentrate

Brain foods that help you concentrate

Ginseng, fish, berries, or caffeine?

Listen to the buzz about foods and dietary supplements, and you'll believe they can do everything from sharpen focus to enhance memory, attention span, and brain function.

But do they really work? there's no denying that as we age, our body ages right along with us. The good news is that you can improve your chances of maintaining a healthy brain if you add 'smart' foods and drinks to your diet.

Caffeine can make you more alert

There's no magic bullet to boost IQ or make you smarter -- but certain substances, like caffeine, can energize you and help you concentrate. Found in coffee, chocolate, energy drinks, and some medications, caffeine gives you that unmistakable wake-up buzz though the effects are short-term. And more is often less: overdo it on caffeine and it can make you jittery and uncomfortable.

Sugar can enhance alertness

Sugar is your brain's preferred fuel source -- not table sugar, but glucose, which your body processes from the sugars and carbs you eat. That's why a glass of something sweet to drink can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking, and mental ability.

Have too much, though, and memory can be impaired -- along with the rest of you. Go easy on the sugar so it can enhance memory without packing on the pounds.

Eat breakfast to fuel your brain

Tempted to skip breakfast? studies have found that eating breakfast may improve short-term memory and attention. Students who eat it tend to perform better than those who don't. Foods at the top of researchers' brain-fuel list include high-fiber whole grains, dairy, and fruits. Just don't overeat; researchers also found high-calorie breakfasts appear to hinder concentration.

Depression like any other illness is a disorder that needs treatmnet. I hope you must be under treatmnet from a good psychiatrist. However if your symptoms of depression still persist after 3 years, it is quite possible that you may need a revision of diagnosis. Consult your psychiatrist for the same. For any further queries you may consult me online.

Dear, at your age, memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

I lost some body close last year and since then feel very depress and prefer keeping to myself all the time.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry

I lost some body close last year and since then feel very depress and prefer keeping to myself all the time.
It is natural to feel low and miss the person you have lost. However if it is interfering with your sleep, studies or general well being, or if you feel suicidal, you need to consult a psychiatrist. It is common to feel low, cry, feel like you are alone, or lose your self confidence. Usually time is the best healer. However if things are too difficult to handle you should talk to a psychiatrist or counselor. Confide in someone close to you, who will support you in this difficult time. Don't cut off from friends or family, even if you feel like you want to be alone.

Dear lybrate-user, don't worry about the leak. There are other fluids which are secreted by other glands. It may not be semen from testicles. If you have erection and lose erection in 30 seconds, it does not matter. Don't feel embarrassed. Induce your g f to handle your penis. Erection comes in waves. Again you will have erection if you are stimulated. Come on private consultation with more details for further advice.
