Am on ttc. My endometrium lining is low. Am taking estradiol 2 mg and thick sel. Vaginal use tab. Whether it can increase my lining? Or ivf is the only option? Whether endometrial thickness will increase? Any ideas please. My age is 25.

DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), MBBS
IVF Specialist, Delhi
Hello Lybrate user in order for a pregnancy to occur, the embryo must implant into the uterine lining (also known as the endometrium). Two hormones produced from the ovaries thicken and prepare the uterine lining for implantation. Estrogen causes the thin uterine lining to thicken. Progesterone causes the thickened uterine lining to develop the characteristics needed for implantation. Numerous studies have found that if a woman has a persistently thin uterine lining despite receiving adequate amounts of estrogen, then the chance for pregnancy is reduced. For many women, the cause of a persistently thin uterine lining is unknown. Many different therapies have been used in an attempt to improve the thickness of the uterine lining during estrogen supplementation. In some women, a thin uterine lining may be the result of not getting a sufficient amount of estrogen. Estrogen levels can be checked with a blood test. Estrogen is most commonly given orally but if this fails, other alternatives include estrogen patches, estrogen injections or administering estrogen vaginally. You should follow your Doctor's instructions and treatments carefully and if, further problem remain same then ask for next management.

My wife was suffering from jaundice hepatitis B before 1 month. So can I have intercourse with her? If not now when can I have. Please advice me. She is recovered from it now.

LCPS, BAM&S
General Physician, Pune
Hepatitis b is a sexually transmitted disease. So even one encounter can transmit disease. If the blood report is definitely negative, then only proceed with intimate night. If not, then wait for the report. Of course you can use condom which provides complete safety and protection from disease. Use best quality condoms. And avoid scratches of the skin which may ooze blood. The blood can also transmit disease.

Painful and heavy periods may be physiological or dysfunctional that is where no obvious cause can be found. Or it may be related to uterine tumors/ ovarian cysts /endometriosis.etc; I would advice you to get a transvaginal USG done if you are worried.

Iron Deficiency In Children - Know The Risk Factors!

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, BCH, DNB - Training, PDCC - Pediatric Hepatology & Gastroenterology

Iron Deficiency In Children - Know The Risk Factors!

Iron is an essential nutrient and mineral that is required by adults and children alike. Iron helps move oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and helps muscles store and use oxygen. It is especially important for children because it aids development and prevents anaemia. Untreated iron deficiency in children can cause physical and mental delays. It can lead to less healthy red blood cells in the child's blood stream which will cause a delay in the growth of physical and mental faculties.

Risk factors for iron deficiency in children

Infants and children at highest risk of iron deficiency include:

  1. Babies who are born prematurely or have a low birth weight
  2. Babies who drink cow's milk before age 1
  3. Breast-fed babies who aren't given complementary foods containing iron after age 6 months
  4. Babies who drink formula that isn't fortified with iron
  5. Children ages 1 to 5 who drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of cow's milk, goat's milk or soy milk a day
  6. Children who have certain health conditions, such as chronic infections or restricted diets
  7. Children ages 1 to 5 who have been exposed to lead
  8. Adolescent girls also are at higher risk of iron deficiency because their bodies lose iron during menstruation.

Symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia

The signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia in children may include:

  1. Pale skin
  2. Fatigue or weakness
  3. Slow cognitive and social development
  4. Inflammation of the tongue
  5. Difficulty maintaining body temperature
  6. Increased likelihood of infections
  7. Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or pure starch

Prevent iron deficiency in children

Take steps to prevent iron deficiency in your child by paying attention to his or her diet. For example:

  1. Breast-feed or use iron-fortified formula. Breast-feeding until your child is age 1 is recommended. If you don't breast-feed, use iron-fortified infant formula.
  2. Encourage a balanced diet. When you begin serving your baby solids, typically between ages 4 months and 6 months, feed him or her foods with added iron, such as iron-fortified baby cereal. For older children, good sources of iron include red meat, chicken, fish, beans and dark green leafy vegetables. Between ages 1 and 5, don't allow your child to drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of milk a day.
  3. Enhance absorption. Vitamin C helps promote the absorption of dietary iron. You can help your child absorb iron by offering foods rich in vitamin C, such as melon, strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, tomatoes and potatoes.
  4. Consider iron supplements. If your baby was born prematurely or with a low birth weight or you're breast-feeding a baby older than 4 months and he or she isn't eating two or more servings a day of iron-rich foods, talk to your child's doctor about oral iron supplements.

Make sure that you watch out for the tell tale signs of iron deficiency and take the necessary precautions to avoid the same. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

I am 19 years old. I was on oc pills for 4 months .I finished d last pack and decided to stop taking the pill. But now I am diagnosed with polycystic ovaries .I used to have regular periods but after stopping oc pills I got pcos. Now my gums suggested me to continue my oc pills (I really don't wish to) and has prescribed me with primolut N for five days to get my periods. Is there any other way to cure my pcos and get back to my regular cycle. Or do I need primolut N every month to induce periods.

Pcos problem is a problem where there is hormonal imbalance in the body. Life style modifications like low carbohydrate diet, exersie weight loss can improve the condition. Although some poeple who are thin also have pcos. So avoid putting on weight. If you have irregular cycles take tablets for the periods to come. These factors can help you from developing further worsening of PCO.
