Ear Pain - Can it Be a Sign of Infection?

MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Nagpur
Ear Pain - Can it Be a Sign of Infection?

Ear infection is a disorder which can either be viral or bacterial, affecting one’s middle ear the most. This disorder is painful as fluid accumulates in the ear leading to inflammation. Infections of the ear can either be chronic or acute in nature, the damage is more prominent in case of chronic infections. Acute ear infections can be painful but they usually fade away in a few days’ time.

Symptoms
In case of an ear infection, you will experience pain in the ear. A pressure may develop in the ear accompanied by drainage of pus from the ears. Some severe cases might also lead to loss of hearing, be it temporary or permanent. The symptoms of ear infection may develop and affect both the ears. Fever during ear infections is another common auxiliary condition.

Causes
Ear infections tend to occur when the Eustachian tubes in the ear get blocked as a result of fluid accumulation in the ear. The Eustachian tubes can get blocked due to the following reasons –

  1. Being affected by allergies
  2. Conditions such as cold can lead to ear infection
  3. Problems in the sinuses
  4. Excessive smoking
  5. Infected adenoid glands

In addition to the causes, there are certain risk factors which can make one prone to ear infections, some of them being:

  1. Narrow Eustachian tubes in children increase the risks of ear infections
  2. Changes in climate and altitude
  3. Second hand exposure to cigarette smoke

Treatment
For mild symptoms, simple home remedies will suffice. A warm compress on the affected area can reduce the pain. Taking pain relieving medications such as ibuprofen can also help in reducing pain. For moderate symptoms, antibiotics may be required to treat the bacterial infection.
If other treatments do not work, then surgery may be required. Usually tubes are inserted in the ear to drain the accumulated fluid. If it involves the adenoid glands, then surgical removal of the adenoid glands may be required. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ent-specialist.

What is the permanent solution for sinus and nasal problem? I am infected cold and cough every week for 24 hour, so is it any solution for my problem?

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS

If it is chronic (means of long duration) then get a ct scan done bcz there may be polyps inside the nose. You can start tab. Montair-l daily at bed time and flomist nasal spray 2 puffs twice a day for 2 weeks. Review with ct scan report.

Dear lybrate-user, rhinoplasty is a delicate surgery which requires skills and yes it is quite successful in india depending on where you are getting operated. Regarding cost it may vary from 50000 to 1 lakh again depending on where you are operating. After surgery you will recover within a week but exact results will be seen after 6 months to one year.

You most probably have a saddle- nose deformity due to your nose surgery. In all likelyhood, you will need another surgery ( augmentation rhinoplasty) for the correction of the deformity. Please see an ENT specialist for the same.

This is due to dryness of the mouth, this is because of lack of mucus in the mouth which is protective layer of our mouth, and is being produced in the mouth by glands which will be helped by good and healthy blood supply to the glands, blood with good blood cells will take oxygen to the gland and gland works, they require oxygen in ample of amount, so if you do not take iron diet on daily basis than this will lead to less of mucus production and hence lead to dryness and thick mucus problem, start taking good iron diet on daily basis, and shakes, avoid salty and spicy food.

What is sinus and how can we identify it and what are it symptoms and how can it be prevented?

BHMS
Homeopath, Raebareli
The sinuses are a connected system of hollow cavities in the skull. The largest sinus cavities are around an inch across; others are much smaller. Sinus Tests Physical examination: A doctor can look into the nose with a lighted viewer to see the turbinates, which may be swollen. She may press or tap on the face over the sinuses to check for pain. Computed tomography (CT scan): A CT scanner uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the sinuses. CT scanning can help diagnose chronic sinusitis. Symptoms: Acute sinusitis (sinus infection): Viruses or bacteria infect the sinus cavity, causing inflammation. Increased mucus production, nasal congestion, discomfort in the cheeks, forehead or around the eyes and headaches are common symptoms. Sinus Treatments Decongestants: Medications that cause blood vessels in the inner nasal tissue to constrict. As a result, there is less sinus congestion, mucus production and postnasal drip. For further queries get back to me.

I am seventeen years old, I am suffering from a little bit of sinus every day at a particular time. I used to avoid the cool products from last month. Even though I can't get relief from it. What should I do for this?

DORL, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Faridabad
The bone of the nose gets deviated this leads to nose breathing problem if a person suffering from nasal obstruction along with sinusits and mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically.
