I have thyroid problem. How much time it wiil remain with me. Or should I take medicine lifetime.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Vijayaji, if it is hyperthyroidism, (thyrotoxicosis) there are various typesof therapies employed to control excess activity including radio active iodine, surgery and antithyroid drugs. Sometimes excess activity of thyroid gland ceases to be there after treatment, for quite some time. Or post treatment (radio active iodine or sugery) there will be hypothyroidism, which has to be treated with thyroxine tablets and for life time.

taking 18 x 50 mcg tablets at a time is not going to cause any problematic symptoms either immediately or later also. Since one week has passed you need not worry about it. But do not repeat such mistakes again.

Mr. Lybrate-user, diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes. Particularly occurs if blood sugar level is not well controlled for a long time. Hyperglycemia affects small blood vessels of retina and blocks them creating lack of oxygen. This leads to development of new blood vessels which are fragile and bleed blocking the vision or shrivel and cause detachment of retina. Only treatment for this is laser therapy, or certain injections in to the eye or if needed surgery (vitriectomy). In other medical practices there is no treatment for this problem. Strict blood glucose control is also very essential part of the treatment. Please go through appropriate treatment. Getting depressed is not going to benefit. Thanks.

Mr Ravi, Thanks for the query. Long standing diabetes even when it is well controlled does cause peripheral neuropathy leading to irritation, burning, tingling and numbness in feet and legs. Further if diabetes is uncontrolled as is the case with your mom, the problem is bound to be more severe. First and foremost thing is to achieve a strict blood glucose control with fasting <100 mg, PP 160 to 170 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. Plus if needed certain medications also may be needed to reduce nerve irritation and pain. Thanks.

Ikshaji, hypothyroidism causes skin to become dry. Once it is controlled with tsh levels becoming normal, most symptoms will disappear. Carrots and beet root are fine, can be eaten. Only cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts, soy beans and soy containing products and coffee need to be avoided.

Suffering from hypothyroidism ,tsh 14. Is there any medicine to get things back to normal ?
Mr. Lybrate-user, hypothyroidism is due to deficiency of thyroxine hormone produced by thyroid gland. Therefore, treatment is to a supplement of that hormone as thyroxine tablets daily. Dose depends on body weight, tsh level and t4 level. Once treatment is begun, most symptoms will be in control. Thanks.

I have diabetes and my sugar level has increased how can I decrease it to normal?

MBBS, MD - Medicine

I have diabetes and my sugar level has increased how can I decrease it to normal?
Increase thirst, increased frequency of urination are some initial symptoms of diabetes but it can vary from being completely asymptomatic to non specific symptoms like weakness, tingling in feet, dry mouth, blurry vision, burning during urination. You need to follow a healthy lifestyle to prevent such metabolic diseases. Type 1 usually occurs at younger age due to insulin deficiency and treated with insulin injections. Type 2 usually in adults due to insulin resistance and treated with oral medicines.

Can I take metride (2/500mg) in place of amaryl m (2/500mg)? I am a 62 yrs old diabetic person.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

If the combination is glimepirde 2 mg & metformin 500 you can definitely take it. Amoral is too expensive. Tab k -glim m2 (blue cross lab) is only 26 plus for 10 tabs you take any one of these instead of amaryl.

My adams apple is very large Is it reducible or not? Large adams apple is it ok or not. Please tell.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Yes, adam's apple reduction requires careful thinning of the voice box cartilages. It is not commonly done in most males but is extremely commonly done in sex change (gender reassignment) surgery. You may want to consult a surgeon who specializes in these procedures.
