Mr. Lybrate-user, phytolecca berry is claimed to be useful in weight reduction. But clinical evidence is hardly there. There are no specific clinical trials showing the beneficial effect. So if one wants to try it is left on the belief that this medicine works.

lybrate-user, Diabetes even if not in very good control is unlikely to cause an increase in menstrual cycle. It is better if you get a thyroid assay done and see if there is any problem with it. Plus it is good to consult a local gynecologist. Thanks.

I have sugar reading of 168 after food. Is this reading normal or is something required to be done on this.
Blood sugar 168 mg/100 ml, is considered as pre-diabetic level or impaired blood glucose (igt). This normally does not need any treatment. But needs a lifestyle change, so that in future it does no progress to full fledged diabetes. Life style change includes daily exercise for 1 hour, brisk walking is good, avoiding sweets in excess, avoiding deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries and other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks, products containing sweet corn syrup, highly processed food products. Plus refrain from alcohol and smoking totally.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the question. Based on your description there could be some problem with your thyroid gland. But if the doctor examining has not found anything serious, then there is no reason to worry about. In hypothyroidism particularly due to Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, the gland may have grown a bit or become nodular or firm. But there is unlikely to be a growth towards chest. Still if you are feeling so strongly, ask your your doctor to get an ultra sono graphy done, that will clarify your doubt. Once the condition is confirmed or clear, then further line of treatment can be decided. Thanks.

Synthetic thyroxine is given to supplement the endogenous thyroxine and does not have any side effects. Side effects from the other components in the medicine have been reported but are practically inconsequential in clinical practice.

lybrate-user, If you have hypothyroidism (inactive thyroid gland), then adequate dose of THYROXINE tablets have to be taken daily, for lifelong. Dose depends on your body weight, TSH & T4 levels. Plus avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Avoid maida and products made from it. Thanks.

Yes it is normal. In pregnancy there is increase in oestrogen & progesterone level which causes hyperplasia of beta cells of pancreas which leads to more insulin secretion and blood sugar level goes down. In pregnancy fasting should be between 70-90 mg/dl and 2 hr postmeal should be less than 120mg/dl (dipsi guidelines)

Dear lybrate user, one of the major nutritional substance required for human body is carbohydrate. We take carbohydrate in the form of rice, wheat, sugar etc. The complex molecules of carbohydrate are broken down into simple glucose molecules during digestion & released in the blood stream to be absorbed by the muscle cells. Muscle cells utilise the glucose molecules to release energy by breaking down those glucose molecules. Insulin hormone plays a vital role in the absorption of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells. In abnormal conditions, either due to less production of insulin or due to resistance to insulin, the process of absorption of glucose by the muscles comes to a stand still. The glucose molecules remains in the bloodstream which results in the increase in the blood sugar level. The failure of utilisation of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells results in production of less energy than normal condition. This is externally manifested as the fatigue & tiredness of the patient. This excess amount of blood sugar compels the kidney to function more than normal level in order to excrete the blood sugar molecules through urine. As a result the patient suffers from frequent urination. This abnormal condition is clinically known as diabetes mellitus. Once a patient is diagnosed with diabetes he has to take regular medicine to keep his blood sugar level within normal limits. However, the patient does not need to take medicine unless his/her post. Prandial blood sugar level reaches 200. If post. Prandial blood sugar level reaches 200 then patient can take homoeopathic mother tincture gymnema sylvestra q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. Along with intake of medicines the patient need to walk at least 1 hour daily without any interval. In order to decrease the intake of carbohydrate in diet the patient should avoid rice, sweet dishes, fruits, cold drinks, fast foods, alcoholic beverages, potato etc.

General Physician,
I am suffering from sugar so should I have to do and what type of medicine should I take please help me.
Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose – SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For diabetes, hypertension (high BP) and many long-term illness control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch personally. If you have symptoms of Hypothyroidism such as low enery levels, abnormal weight gain, low moods, dry skin, abnormal hair fall, constipation, irregular mensus, etc. I would be inclined to investigate further for metabolic and other hormonal imbalances and treat appropriately. Diet would have to be customised to your condition.

So long as your blood sugar levels are under control, your risk of heart attack are due to other factors like smoke and pollution are more, because you must be eating the right food & doing exercises due to dm. Take care and get checked for heart routinely.
