Dear Lybrateuser, - You should first try to control your blood sugar level by lifestyle changes - have more of fibre containing foods like fruits & vegetables, legumes including pulses, lentils, beans, sprouts, low fat proteins, lean meats - avoid fried, processed & junk foods, also sweets, salty snacks, alcohol & tobacco if you do so - have 5-6 small meals including snacks rather than three large meals, chew your food well, do nit skip meals, have meals on time - reduce your weight by diet & exercise, sugar level will come down - do regular exercise like walking, jogging, swimming for one hour, also include moderate weight lifting twice a day, do yoga & deep breathing for 5-10 min daily morning to keep fit - monitor sugar & can consult a dietician for proper diet - follow the lifestyle measures for 3-4 months & if no decrease then consult a doctor.

, yes sweetened aerated drinks are considered as unhealthy food. They contain a lot of sugar, which is not good for health. Secondly you are over weight with a bmi of 28.39 kg/m2, your ideal body weight should be about 80 kgs. Both these things are an invitation for diabetes.

However, of late , daily I am waking up in between (once ) and go for urinating and thereby disturbance in good sleep. Is it any bad symptom or is it due to aging. Please advice.

I am just 60 crossed and I am a diabetic person (Type 2 ) and taking medicine only and sugar level is under control ....
Mr. Lybrate-user, in diabetes if blood glucose level goes above 180 mg/100 ml, then kidneys can not reabsorb all the glucose filtered in the glomerulous. So certain amount is lost in urine. When urine containing glucose comes in bladder, it pulls more water due to osmosis in the bladder. Hence bladder becomes more full, increasing the urge to pass. That is one of the reasons why a person with diabetes passes more urine and frequently. If fasting is closer to 100 mg and pp between 150 to 160 mg /100 ml then this problem is less. So it is possible that due to hyperglycemia you need to get up for urinating at night. Age can be a factor. But in non diabetic persons this problem is rarely noticed. It may be seen in those who have benign prostatic enlargement. Thanks.

Madam, it appears that the treatment is helping you as the levels have come closer to normal. However, dosage may have to be increased to 75 mcg and tsh levels need to be checked again after 6 weeks. Better to consult your endocrinologist for exact dosage.

Hypothyroidism - How It Affects Your Lifestyle?

MBBS
General Physician, Gurgaon
Hypothyroidism - How It Affects Your Lifestyle?

Thyroid is a gland which is located in the neck right beneath the Adam’s apple. The hormone produced by it is called thyroxin and this hormone is responsible for controlling the body’s metabolic rate. This gland works as a thermostat for the human body as it controls other hormones which are responsible for burning and using calories.

How does it affect your life?

  • Hypothyroidism, also known as the ‘underactive thyroid disease’, is a disorder which causes the thyroid to secrete insufficient hormone, thus causing the body’s metabolic rate to slow down, and in turn affecting the heart rate and body temperature.
  • The people who suffer from hypothyroidism often experience weight gain and sensitivity to cold. Weight gain in case of hypothyroidism occurs despite having a low appetite. This is because the calories consumed are not burnt and used appropriately.
  • Fatigue is another major issue associated with hypothyroidism. Individuals suffering from hypothyroidism usually become tired after the first half of the day.
  • An underactive thyroid also causes drowsiness and depression. These may initially not seem to be major problems but in the long run, both the quality of life and overall health are usually negatively affected by it.
  • Thyroid related issues have become more common nowadays. Research shows that an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major reasons behind this. Sedentary lifestyle involving little physical movement coupled with consumption of an unbalanced diet has led to surge in the number of such cases.

Doctors prescribe medications in case of hypothyroidism. But apart from medicines, simple modifications in lifestyle can go a long way in addressing this disorder. Research shows that consuming a healthy diet rich in iodine and comprising of sea food and green leafy vegetables, can increase the production of thyroxin in the body. Regular exercises must also be coupled along with following a proper diet. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a general physician.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Your TSH level is high. It falls in the sub-clinical hypothyroidism. In this condition usually not treated. Only when TSH goes above 10 mU/L But if a person has troublesome symptoms even when TSH is lower than 10 mU/L, then treatment is initiated. So please tell me the reasons why you were advised for getting the thyroid test. Thanks.
