Can high fibre be useful in diabetes ?

Dietitian/Nutritionist,
Can high fibre be useful in diabetes ?
Hi , there are two types of fiber soluble and insoluble. The soluble fiber helps in controlling the blood sugar spikes and hence its very useful in maintaining the sugar levels.

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, also called hashimoto's disease, hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, a disorder in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues. In people with hashimoto's, the immune system attacks the thyroid. This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body's needs. Located in the front of your neck, the thyroid gland makes hormones that control metabolism. This includes your heart rate and how quickly your body uses calories from the foods you eat. The exact cause of hashimoto's is not known, but many factors are believed to play a role. They include: genes, hormones, excessive iodine, radiation exposure. Treatments for hashimoto's thyroiditis: there is no cure for hashimoto's, but replacing hormones with medication can regulate hormone levels and restore your normal metabolism. The pills are available in several different strengths.

Dear lybrate user, the bitter truth is once you are diagnosed with diabetes you have to live with it for your rest of life. Diet, exercise & medicine will surely decrease your blood sugar level to normal but it cannot be permanently cured. You have to monitor your blood sugar level every month. However, if you are feeling that your current medication is failing to decrease your blood sugar level then try homoeopathic uranium nit 3x tablets (r. S. Bhargava company). Take 1 tablet, thrice daily, in empty stomach. As you have been suffering from diabetes for more than 10 years, I fear that you may be resistant towards medicine & turned into insulin dependent diabetic patient. If it really happens such then you have to take insulin injection.

Hypertension and Diabetes - How They are Related?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
General Physician, Delhi
Hypertension and Diabetes - How They are Related?

Hypertension or High Blood Pressure can trigger as well as worsen complications related to diabetes. Most people suffering from diabetes tend to develop hypertension later in their lives. Diabetes tends to increase one’s blood pressure, making him/her even more vulnerable to other heart diseases and cardio-vascular disorders. Diabetes often leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of the arteries. A combination of diabetes and hypertension drastically increases the risk of suffering from a heart disease. The risks of kidney diseases and retinopathy (damage to the tiny blood vessels present in the retina) also go up, resulting in blindness. With age, chronic hypertension can also result in numerous cognitive disorders such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease (degenerative mental disorder).

How to prevent Diabetes and Hypertension?
1. Walking for about 40 minutes each day or engaging in any type of aerobic exercise can better one’s heart health. Chalk out an exercise plan upon consulting the doctor
2. Limit drinking and abstain from smoking
3. Go for regular kidney check-ups
4. Eat food rich in fiber such as vegetables, fruits, breads or whole grain cereals
5. Examine blood pressure as well as blood sugar levels regularly at home
6. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga to cut down on stress level; as stress is one of the major contributors to diabetes and the subsequent hypertension
7. Shed off your extra pounds as blood pressure escalates with weight

Hello, TSH 7.29 mU/L, is a sub-clinical state. Normally no treatment is advocated, unless there are troublesome symptoms which can be attributed to hypothyroidism. Since, there is no mention about any symptoms like weight gain, irregular menstruation, slow heart rate, dry skin and hair loss etc. I can not give any specific advice. Thanks.

Hi, Type-2 Diabetes is a lifestyle related problem, so making a few lifestyle changes can lower the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. -Excess weight is the single most important cause of type 2 diabetes, so control or reduce your weight if you are overweight! -Avoid sedentary lifestyle and start get moving. Brisk walking for a half hour every day reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. -Modify your diet: *Choose whole grains and whole grain products over highly processed carbohydrates. The bran and fiber in whole grains make it more difficult for digestive enzymes to break down the starches into glucose. *Avoid sugary beverages which have a high glycemic load, and drinking more of this sugary stuff is associated with increased risk of diabetes. *Choose good fats instead of bad fats. Good fats found in liquid vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. Trans fats or bad fats are found in many margarines, packaged baked goods, fried foods, fast or junk foods. *Limit intake of red meat and processed meats. Nuts, seeds, beans, tofu, or poultry are much more healthful protein choices. -Quit smoking. -Moderate alcohol consumption decreases the risk of type 2 diabetes. -Avoid taking unnecessary stress or tension! And keep an optimistic attitude in life! Medication: Take homoeopathic SBL’s Diaboherb medicine/ 3 times a day daily. Home Remedies: Dry the leaves of mango tree and grind to a powder. Mix 1 teaspoon dry powder in a glass of water and drink it daily to reduce high blood sugar levels. Take 2 teaspoons of bitter gourd (karela) juice once a day. One can also increase its use as a cooked vegetable. Take 1 teaspoon of Indian gooseberry (amla) juice mixed with 1 teaspoon of bitter gourd juice twice a day.

Thank you for the query. The tsh level should preferably be maintained below 10 (normal range 0.5-4 miu/l). Despite taking l-thyroxine supplements if your tsh is being maintained at 23, it implies that the control is inadequate. Please get a complete thyroid profile done (tsh, ft3 and ft4) and consult your physician/or any doctor in this forum for dose adjustment of medications. I would advice you to get a lipid profile done as dyslipidemia may be associated with hypothyroidism.

In case of epilepsy since you are on meds for 3 years, if the seizures are completely controlled and eeg is normal, a trial of gradual taper of medicines can be given. But always taper medicines after consulting your neurologist. And there is always a chance of recurrence so that risk has to be borne in mind.

If one has t1dm insulin is the only treatment. If t2dm then oral drugs plus diet control, exercise and weight reduction can help avoid insulin. But best treatment for diabetes is insulin.
