Migraine cannot be cured. Avoid triggers. If certain foods or odors seem to have triggered your migraines in the past, avoid them. Reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake and avoid tobacco. In general, establish a daily routine with regular sleep patterns and regular meals. In addition, try to control stress. Exercise regularly. Regular aerobic exercise reduces tension and can help prevent migraines. If your doctor agrees, choose any aerobic exercise you enjoy, including walking, swimming and cycling. Warm up slowly, however, because sudden, intense exercise can cause headaches. Obesity is also thought to be a factor in migraine headaches, and regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight or lose weight.

Headache VS Migraine

Headaches are generally classified into two main types: primary headaches and secondary headaches. A migraine, which is a disabling, recurring headache that frequently occurs only on one side of the head and often results in other symptoms, is one type of primary headache. Other primary headaches include cluster and tension headaches. Tension-type headaches are the most common headache, and are often experienced as mild, dull pressure without other accompanying symptoms. Cluster headaches, which are less common than migraines or tension headaches, usually bring severe pain (sometimes described as ?stabbing? pain) behind one eye, and may be accompanied by redness and nasal congestion.

I am a 56 years old female. I am feeling numbness in my right hand and also shivering. And unable to breathe properly.
These are symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety may cause excessive worries, inability to relax, fear of something going wrong along with palpitation, increased heart rate, breathlessness, chest pain, dryness of throat and mouth, dizziness, headache, sweating, tremors, tingling and numbness of limbs, churning sensation in abdomen etc. If you have many of these symptoms, then consult a psychiatrist in your locality who may assess you in detail for any anxiety disorder and prescribe you few medicines and/or psychotherapy for cure. I wish you all the best.

ADHD - Know The Symptoms

ADHD - Know The Symptoms

If you have noticed your child to be restless and anxious all the time, it might look cute as the child is highly energetic, but it could be a cause for concern at the same time. It is not normal and the child could be having ADHD that is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. As the name suggests, it is a disorder with deficiency of attention and in which the child is always hyperactive.

ADHD is a disorder in which the symptoms usually show up before the age of seven. It is characterized by a group of behavioral symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. The impact of these symptoms is felt extensively where his overall self-esteem is affected, be it at home, preschool or school, academics or extracurricular activities and in interpersonal relationships.

The most common symptoms, which are almost diagnostic of ADHD are:

  1. Inability to hold attention: The child's attention span is very short and it is very difficult to keep them engaged on one particular thing.
  2. Increased restlessness: The child would be extremely restless and gets distracted easily.
  3. Fidgeting: The child would be seen constantly fidgeting with his fingers.

The following are the less common ones:

  1. Learning disability is rare, but can happen. However, the good news is that it does not affect the child's intelligence.
  2. Sleep disorders
  3. Difficulty in following directions
  4. Poor executive functioning skills
  5. Disorganization, which can lead to poor motor coordination and impaired movements
  6. ADHD kids tend to forget things very easily and need help with coordinating movements
  7. The child suffering from ADHD could easily tire and/or feel lethargic with very low energy levels. This can lead to the child procrastinating things and not wanting to do things on priority basis
  8. These children also have difficulties with fine motor and cognitive skills and so there is delay in their overall participation in games.

While these are the pressing symptoms of ADHD, occupational therapy can play a significant role in managing the child in the following ways. As a first step, the caregiver should have a detailed discussion with the school staff and any other people with whom the child interacts significantly.

This will help identify areas that need support from an Occupational Therapy, which are the following:

  1. Support with gross and/or fine motor skills
  2. Support with improving handwriting
  3. Support with engaging in playing sports and games
  4. Support in engaging in social activities
  5. Improving sensory processing difficulties
  6. Improving visual perception
  7. Support in adapting to the environment
  8. Teaching strategies to participate in various social and academic activities

So, while an ADHD child is definitely a cause for concern, proper support from family can help manage the condition. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.

I am suffering from insomnia from last 3 months along with paranoid thoughts. What should I do?

Hi, Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant (such as a car crash), or it can harm you over time. For example, ongoing sleep deficiency can raise your risk for some chronic health problems. It also can affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others. Management: Here are five tips everyone can use to help improve the quality of their sleep: Keep your bedroom cool and dark Put away/turn off all electronic devices while preparing for bedtime Stick to a regular bedtime and wake time every day, even on weekends Stop drinking caffeine by the early afternoon and avoid large late-night meals Skip the late-afternoon nap, as it can make it harder to sleep at bedtime Avoid taking unnecessary stress/ tension. Do regular exercise. Go for a brisk walk in the morning. Medication: Take Schwabe's Bacopa Monierri 1x/ thrice daily and Kali Phos./ once daily at night for 1month.

Respected sir, my father is 59 years old suffering from spinocerebellar ataxia. Progressive in nature. 1. Slurring of speech since 2007 2. Gait abnormality since 2009 3. Writing abnormality since 2009 he is not having any comorbidities neither any family history. Please help me if you have any suggestion for him.

DM - Neurology
Neurologist,
Progressive sca at 59 years age is unusual and should trigger a search for various conditions: cerebrovascular disease, demyelinating disease, infectious diseases, vitamin deficiency, toxic exposure, sarcoidosis, autoimmune diseases (eg, sle, sjogren syndrome), and alcohol-induced cerebellar degeneration. Other diseases that can mimic this condition include late-onset spinocerebellar ataxia with or without a family history, olivopontocerebellar degeneration, and other degenerative diseases of the brain. The most problematic is paraneoplastic cerebellar degernation, even though it is slightly more common among women; in men, it may signal an occult small cell ca of the lung, or hodkgin lymphoma. Apart from the tests for the other conditions mentioned, a test for anti-yo antibody and a search for occult malignancy should be done. Treatment is by physiotherapy/gait therapy, and treatment for the underlying condition if possible.

I am 30 year old male working as Assistant professor in Computer science department and having epilepsy in the sense get jerks if I work in front of computer or got tensed. Tat jerk occurs and extends for just 2 to 10 seconds and leaves as it is. I use epitril Md in case if I got any symptoms. Please give me suggestions tat how to recover.

MBBS,J.R. Neurology
General Physician,
This seems to be a case of focal seizures and the triggering factor is either prolonged exposure to light or stress. Avoidance of the triggering factors is of prime importance. You have been prescribed clonazepam and that's quite apt. As said this is best cured by avoidance of precipitating factors and taking medications when they do occur. Take care.
