A type of arthritis that occurs when flexible tissue at the ends of bones wears down. The wearing down of the protective tissue at the ends of bones (cartilage) occurs gradually and worsens over time. Joint pain in the hands, neck, lower back, knees or hips is the most common symptom. Osteoarthritis treatment: homeopathy helps to slow down the process of joint pain (osteoarthritis) & also gives a long term relief in pain without side effects.

Frozen Shoulder - How To Manage?

MBBS, MD - Anaesthesiology
Pain Management Specialist, Ghaziabad
Frozen Shoulder - How To Manage?

 What Is Frozen Shoulder?
A frozen shoulder becomes stiff and painful, with limited range of motion. The space inside the shoulder joint slowly gets smaller. Frozen shoulder may take months to years to improve. A frozen shoulder develops in stages. In the fi rst stage (freezing), people notice shoulder pain and that it’s harder to move that arm. This stage usually lasts about 4 months. In the next 4 months, the shoulder stays very painful. It’s possible to move the arm only a little. This is known as being frozen. In the last stage, thawing, pain slowly goes away, and the arm can be moved again. This phase also lasts about 4 months in most cases.

What Causes Frozen Shoulder?
Causes of spontaneous frozen shoulder are unknown. A long period of immobilization, such as with wearing a sling or a cast after an injury, can cause it. Things that can increase chances of getting a frozen shoulder include long-term bed rest, shoulder injury, diabetes, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and thyroid problems.

What Are the Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder?
Pain occurs throughout the shoulder area. The pain is in bones of the shoulder joint. Other nearby bones, including the scapula (shoulder blade) and clavicle (collarbone), can also be painful.
Pain can reach down into muscles of the upper arm. The pain occurs at the front and side of the shoulder. It’s constant, even at rest and at night. Besides the pain, movement becomes very limited. It becomes very hard to lift the arm.
How Is Frozen Shoulder Diagnosed?
The doctor makes a diagnosis from a physical examination. The doctor may order x-rays to rule out other illnesses that may cause symptoms. These conditions include degenerative arthritis, tumors, and shoulder dislocation.

How Is Frozen Shoulder Treated?
When frozen shoulder occurs without an injury or operation, conservative treatment with physical therapy is best. When it develops after shoulder surgery, more aggressive treatment, including more surgery, may be needed. The doctor can prescribe different treatments, including nonsteroidal antiinfl ammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain. Sometimes, stronger pain pills are ordered if NSAIDs don’t help. The key to recovery is to keep moving. Physical therapy, home exercises, and occupational therapy can be prescribed to relieve pain and maintain arm movement. Occupational
therapy helps continue normal activities. The doctor may inject steroids into the joint itself. Very rarely, surgery or manipulation of the shoulder may be needed. After recovery, frozen shoulder usually won’t occur in the same shoulder. Sometimes the other shoulder can become frozen.

DOs and DON’Ts in Managing Frozen Shoulder:
✔ DO take pills as your doctor directs.
✔ DO follow all instructions from the physical and occupational therapists.
✔ DO exercises as instructed.
✔ DO call your doctor if you have symptoms that worry you.
✔ DO call your doctor if you have shoulder pain that doesn’t respond to rest and is related to decreased range of motion of the shoulder joint.
✔ DO use and move your shoulder normally. A frozen shoulder often follows periods of lack of use, or immobility, in a shoulder.

  •  DON’T forget to do exercises.
  • DON’T stop your physical therapy without talking to your doctor.

The Secret to Avoiding FRACTURES, Revealed by Dr. Kamal Bachani

The secret to avoiding bone and joint related injuries revealed!

An average person experiences two fractures during his or her lifetime and same holds true for joint related injuries. The severity of this condition depends on a number of factors, ranging from the forces responsible for injury and location to the damage done to the nearby tissues and bones.

How age plays a role in your chances of getting a fracture?

Your risk and severity of developing a fracture, depends, to a certain extent on your age.

A very common occurrence during childhood is crippling joint related injuries, the fractures that you tend to have during this time are generally less complex than the broken bone instances that you stand to experience when you enter adulthood.

With time, your bones become fragile and you become prone to broken bones sustained from falls, which you wouldn't when you were young. Furthermore, as you step into your 50th year, you can get struck by the bone condition osteoporosis, a leading cause of bone fractures during this time. For women, menopause makes them more susceptible to osteoporosis (as infrequent periods and hormonal changes at this time lead to loss of bone mass) and subsequently broken bones.

Preventing crippling joint injuries need many steps in younger generation known as prehab especially for sporting population and adult population involved in day to day activities requiring your body getting subjected to physical stress.

Simple steps to get your joints back to normal in case you do get into injuries.

  • having a calcium and vitamin d rich diet to strengthen bones
  • exercising to strengthen bone and muscle health as well as your balance
  • taking relevant medicines to make your bones strong
  • going for timely bone mineral density test to determine the health of your bone
  • exposing yourself to the sun for about 20 minutes everyday
  • having a requisite calcium intake of 1000 mg and 1200 mg for pre- and postmenopausal women respectively
  • preventing a fracture by modification in your household furniture, extra clothings, sometimes addition of simple orthotic devices, improving your muscle reaction time etc go in long way to help prevent falls.

I am 19 years old. I has a lot of pain in my ankle joint from 3 days. What should I do?
Hi ~use elastic bandages (such as an ace bandage) to wrap your ankle. ~wear a brace to support your ankle. ~use crutches for walking till swelling and pain subsides. ~keep your foot raised above your heart with pillows when resting or sleeping to reduce swelling. ~get plenty of rest and do not put weight on your ankle. Still you don't get relief than visit physiotherapist as physical examination /xray may be required for further investigation. Wishing you a good health.

What are the common causes of Back Pain?

Doctor Of Physical Therapy (DPT), Bachelor of Physical Therapy
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
What are the common causes of Back Pain?

What are the common causes of back pain?

Back pain can be caused by one or combination of several factors.
Some of these are:

Muscle or ligament sprain
This can occur due to poor posture, repeated heavy lifting, sudden awkward movement.

Bulging or herniated disc (slipped disc)
Discs are like cushions between our spinal verbrae which absorb shock. Due to repeated stress or sudden awkward force the disc material can bulge or protrude and press on nerve. Bulging discs may not painful and pain is mostly when it presses or irritates a nerve coming out of the spine.
Problems of the disc are called spondylosis.
Cervical spondylosis (neck area)
Thoracic spondylosis (upper and mid back area)
Lumbar spondylosis (low back area)

Arthritis
Osteoarthritis (degeneration of joints in the spine) can occur due to excessive stress on spine and also as we age.

Osteoporosis
This causes thinning and weakening of the bones in the spine.
The bone density and calcium is low and the risk of fractures is higher in people having osteoporosis.

Deformities of the spine
Abnormal curvature of the spine from birth or developed later in life can cause back pain.
Scoliosis, kyphosis etc.

It is very important to find the cause of the pain as treatment approaches are different depending on the problem. Knowing the root cause helps to create awareness that can prevent it from recurring.
