How To Live With or Handle Auto Immune Disease

MBBS, MD - Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Pain Management Specialist, Jaipur
How To Live With or Handle Auto Immune Disease
Handling an Auto Immune Disease

What are Autoimmune Disorders?
It is a disorder of the immune system where the immune system can get ‘hyperactive’ or on the other end of the spectrum can become exceptional slow in its response to germs and bacterium, leaving the individual vulnerable to a host of infections and diseases.
When in ‘Hyper mode’ the body’s immune system starts producing antibodies (White Blood Cells) attacking and damaging the body’s own tissues (Red Blood Cells) beyond repair. Treatment of the Auto-Immune diseases generally focuses on reducing the activity levels of the immune system so as to let the Red Blood Cells multiply and heal the body to an extent.
Not all Auto Immune diseases are life threatening or terminal in nature. Some are even classified as “commonly occurring” disorders in the larger population. Examples of these would be –
1) Psoriasis – A Skin disorder where overactive immune system blood cells called T-cells collect in the skin. The immune system activity stimulates skin cells to replicate rapidly, producing layers of silvery scaly plaques on the skin. These often look like ‘Dandruff’ and can be seen all over the individual’s body, accompanied by severe itching and skin irritability. Psoriasis is often triggered due to stress and hormonal imbalances along with other environmental factors such as poor hygiene, inadequate diet, lack of sleep etc. Along with oral medication, lifestyle changes such as reducing stress at work or home, making sure one gets at least 8 hours of restful sleep per night and regular head and body massages are known to help reduce the severity of the problem to a great extent.

2) Rheumatoid Arthritis – The hyper immune system produces antibodies that attach themselves to the joint linings and then start to eat away at the cartilage and tissues causing swelling or inflammation and a sharp stabbing continuous pain. Oral medication along with gentle cardio (slow walking) and stretching exercise routines such as Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates are known to have countered the ill-effects of this movement restricting disorder, to a large extent.

3) Aggravated Thyroid – An aggravated thyroid is a result of the excessive antibodies produced by an overactive immune system which attack the thyroid gland and slowly destroy the cells that produce the all-important thyroid hormone. Prolonged negligence or when left undetected for long, it often leads to Grave’s Disease (linked to hyperthyroidism) or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (linked to hypothyroidism.) The former can lead to weight-loss, bulging eyes, rapid heart-rate, and chronic fatigue while the later often causes sudden weight gain, depressed state of mind, dry skin and severe constipation. A good way to avoid diseases of the thyroid would be to maintain a healthy active lifestyle and a stable healthy body weight. It is also recommended that one goes in for regular preventive health check-ups for early detection of any thyroid related disorders.

A little can go a long way in limiting ill effects of autoimmune disorders.

Viral Diseases - How Do They Spread?

MD, MBBS
General Physician, Bangalore
Viral Diseases - How Do They Spread?

Caused by the microorganisms called viruses, infections pertaining to these microorganisms are known as viral diseases. These diseases are different and diverse in nature as they are caused by a number of viruses. Among them, the common cold is the most known viral disease and occurs due to the infection of your upper respiratory tract, namely the nose and throat.

Other widespread viral infections are:

  1. Chickenpox
  2. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
  3. HPV (human papillomavirus)
  4. Shingles or herpes zoster (a viral infection that leads to the development of rash)
  5. Viral pneumonia (a condition that occurs due to viruses that are responsible for flu and colds)
  6. Viral hepatitis (inflammation of the liver that is caused by a virus)
  7. Viral meningitis (viral infection wherein inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain occurs)
  8. Rubella, mumps and measles
  9. Herpes

How do they spread?

These diseases are infectious and can easily spread from one person to another. When the microorganism enters your body, it begins to reproduce.

Different ways that they can spread include:

  1. Breathing in the germs present in airborne droplets when an infected person sneezes or coughs
  2. Coming in contact with the body fluids of an infected person during sexual activity
  3. Indirect contact with these microorganisms when you touched inanimate objects handled by an infected person
  4. Viral infections can also spread through insect bites. Certain germs depend on insects as carriers such as ticks and mosquitoes for moving from host to host
  5. Having virus-contaminated water or food is another way in which viral infection can spread from person to person. Such a mode of transfer enables the virus to spread among a large number of people

BHMS, DEMS

HELLO lybrate-user. A. Poor nutrition: This is one of the most common reasons for hair loss, especially in India. Iron deficiency (anaemia) tops the list and is followed by protein deficiency. Improper absorption of nutrients can also lead to poor nutrition. B.Crash dieting: Excessive dieting, especially mono dieting, which involves completely avoiding a particular type of food group, disturbs the balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat, leading to hair loss. Sometimes, hair loss does not reverse, even after the patient gets back on a normal diet. C. Smoking: Nicotine (tobacco) negatively influences the micro-circulation of the scalp, leading to increased hair loss. D. Mental stress: There can be an increased hair loss when an individual is highly stressed, though the exact mechanism of this is not known. E. Dandruff: Dandruff is inflamed, flaky skin on the scalp, which hinders proper circulation and nutrition to the hair, thereby causing increased hair loss. Hair loss is usually diagnosed based on the appearance and pattern of hair loss, along with a detailed medical history, including questions about the prevalence of hair loss in your family. Give details in private account. Homeopathic medicine will give you best result. Follow some tips: 1.You need to take handful of neem leaves and boil it in water for 5 minutes. Now take out the leaves and add soaked fenugreek leaves for 2 teaspoon in a grinder. Make the paste and apply all over your hair. You should also not throw away the water which you have derived by boiling the neem leaves. This has the goodness of neem and antiseptic property. You can stay away from the dandruff if you can do this treatment for your hair on a regular basis. You can wash your paste over the hair after 30 minutes. 2. Feed your hair: Have a good balanced diet 3. Give hair their building blocks: Have a protein-rich diet 4. Exercise 30 min daily. 5.use arnica hair oil and arnica shampoo. 6. Consult me for best result. TAKE CARE :)
