Resp sir/mam, I am a 26 year old male having backpain for 4 months. Initially it was on lower left side of spine but today it is at right side and slightly above. I had many visits to the nearby hospital and received shortwave diathermy for 7-8 days which gave some relief. I apply osteoflam which gives temporary relief. Please help as the pain seems to settle somewhere deep and is discomforting. Whenever I sit with straight posture there is no pain, but when my back posture couch it starts paining somewhere deep in the back. Also, after doing some amount of exercise the pain subsides for sometime. I know that I need to loose few pounds as my stomach is bulging but first I need to be cured. Ps: there is no pain in the legs so it is not a case of slip disc thankfully.

You need to do regular exercise to build up your back muscles. This will also help you in getting your shape back and loose some weight. Also get your vit. B12 vit. D3 and calcium levels checked. Often these are low and can cause backpain. Only mri scan can find out whether there is any slip disc. If mri is normal you need not worry about it otherwise get it done asap. If you are only 24 years old and have developed weakness of left side of face and left hand then it is a serious problem and needs urgent evaluation with a brain scan. Please see a neurologist at the earliest, get yourself appropriately evaluated and treated accordingly. Rheumatoid Arthritis - Ayurvedic Treatment For It!

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body recognizes the body's own system as foreign and produces an inflammatory reaction. The synovium which is the space between the bones and the joints and contains a lubricating fluid which allows easy movement of the joints.

Inflammation of this space leads to painful, swollen joints that can also turn red and become stiff over a period of time. The joint surfaces can gradually progress to produce deformities (the swan-neck deformity of the hand for instance) and disability.

Because it is an autoimmune disorder, the exact etiology is not known but a lifestyle, stress, cold weather are supposedly predisposing factors. That being the case, it is not surprising that Ayurveda has a variety of options, both in terms of do's and don't be to manage rheumatoid arthritis - both the severity of symptoms and further progression of the disease.

Do's: A well-planned diet will help by supporting optimal functioning of the immune system and nourish the affected joints.

  1. People diagnosed with RA should follow a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables. Drumsticks, bitter gourd, carrot, papaya, green leafy vegetables, etc., reduce inflammation and hyperactivity of the immune system. The antioxidant properties in these neutralize the free radicals circulating in the body (responsible for increasing inflammation). This helps control the longstanding inflammation of the joints. 
  2. It is also advisable to eat them as whole fruits and not as juices. The fiber in the whole fruits helps digestion. 
  3. Sprinkle pepper powder over cooling food items like cucumber and radish (or completely avoid eating such food). 
  4. Include garlic which is an excellent remedy for RA, can be mixed with buttermilk.
  5. Whole grains such as wheat, brown rice, millet, barley are beneficial for RA, their high fiber content helps in proper digestion and promotes regular bowel movements. 
  6. Aged honey mixed with plain water. 
  7. Drink boiled milk to which dry ginger powder is added; this can replace tea and coffee. 
  8. Milk mixed with turmeric powder is also helpful in controlling inflammation. 
  9. Work at reducing weight.

Don'ts: In addition to adding the above to your diet, there are some things to avoid, which can worsen symptoms of inflammation.

  1. Avoid overall unhealthy and irregular diet habits which affects the immune system and aggravates symptoms. 
  2. Avoid sleeping during daytime and staying awake at nights. 
  3. Avoid deep fried foods and fermented food items. 
  4. Given its autoimmune nature, it is better to avoid regular allergy-inducing foods like dairy products, soy, peanuts, processed foods, artificial additives, etc. These could trigger an enhanced allergic reaction
  5. Avoid alcohol, tobacco. 
  6. Avoid tea and coffee and other caffeinated drinks.

With simple daily food habit and lifestyle changes, the severity of RA can be managed effectively.

For first 48 hours of injury do ice massage, for minimum movement of foot you can use crape bandage & tie it firmly, do not put pressure or body weight on your injured foot. After 48 hours do hot fomentation & isotonic exercises gradually move towards the isometric, partial weight and then to full weight bearing position. Don't do exercises if your foot have pain, swelling or discoloration of your foot. In that case consult orthopedic.

I am a 23 year old female. And I feel severe back pain and stomach pain in periods. What should I do?

Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Use no pillow under the head. Any way take paracetamol 250mg od & sos you will need other supportive medicines also. Do back (spine) & general exercises contact me again if need be. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take you may have to use lumbosacral support for some time. Avoid painful act/activities. Take medicines as prescribed it may have to be further investigated.

Posture correction must. Do hot fomentations and stretch your back. If it work then OK otherwise physiotherapy treatment and ultrasound if report are normal.

Hi, Apply Rumalaya liniment and massage for 10 mins and give hot water fomentation. This can be done thrice daily. If the pain is severe, take tab. Yogaraja guggulu 1-1-1 with hot water after food. Use soft medium sized pillow while sleeping. Perform neck exercises for 10 mins in the morning and evening regularly.

Hi lybrate-user. See backpain is a something which is becoming epidemic nowadays. You need to be causious. Use support for back while working. Driving. You should be fit at your age. You must be working long long hours and sitting under stress without any spine support. Use cushions regularly. I myself have such a busy schedule I do not heed to my spine and at nite the pain takes its toll. So please be careful. If its excrutiating use analgesics like paracetamol 1000 mg stat or diclofenac but these have sideeffevts too. So best is prevention.

Keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Back exercises. Many people go to physiotherapists with back pain. Here are two exercises that help to relieve pain and reduce stiffness in the back: •Dear, 1. Lie on your back with both of your legs straight. In this position, bring your left knee up close to your chest. Hold this position for 10 seconds. Return your leg to the straight position. Repeat with the right leg. •2. Stand up with your arms on your side. Bend to the left side while slowly sliding your left hand down your left leg. Come back up slowly and relax. Repeat with the right side of your body.

Backacke can be due to numerous reasons like back strain, big tummy, slip disc, lumber spondylosis. For best treatment please send an x ray image & consult privately. Till then you can do following home remedies: 1) mix camphor in coconut oil and boil it. Massage it followed by hot fomentation. 2) have turmeric & honey milk. 3) put a hot-water bag on back supported by a cushion. 4) add ginger while brewing your tea 5) if you are overweight, go for weight loss program 6) stay away from cold, go for hot water baths.

Now I am 68, in 2013 may-2nd., due to blocks in the blood running to brain. Now health wise, I am comfort but my left shoulder joints giving some problems by not allowing lift up & while bath - hand not allowing to my back for cleaning and giving discomforts for washing after tools. I am doing some exercises as per my Dr's advise with the help of an Physiotherapist for the past 6 months. But no improvement.

This can be due to 2 reasons. Blocks in your brain causing paralysis of the muscles. Other reason can be due to a muscle tear which causes inability to lift your shoulder. Did you injure your shoulder anytime in the past?
