5 Proven ways to keep your child away from junk food

In India, 2% of urban children are obese, 8-10% are overweight and the number of children likely to be obese is on the rise. Junk food seems to be the major cause behind this recent trend.

Low in nutrient but high on calories, junk food has been found to adversely affect not only energy levels but also brain function. With junk food being easily available, it could be tough to keep your child away from it while nudging him on to eat healthily. However, there are ways in which you can keep your child away from junk food, and consequently lifestyle diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular problems etc. Read on...

1. Always keep healthy snacks easily accessible
Children have a tendency to have foods that are visible and easy to reach. So, if you have packaged foods that your child can get his hands on very easily, it’s time to remove them. From vegetables, fruits to wholegrain crackers, such healthy snack options should be within the reach of your child. Place them in easy to reach food cabinets or on the lower shelves of the fridge, so that whenever your child feels hungry, he can go straight for them rather than opting for unhealthy food options.

2. Say no to junk food when at home
You have the power to create a home environment where you can control what can be eaten and what goes into your pantry. The home should be a place where healthy food should be in and junk food should be out. This way, you get to control the amount of junk food your child has as well as present healthier alternatives to him.

3. Don’t reward your child with junk food
It is very common for parents to reward their children with junk food. This shouldn’t be done as it only makes junk food an even more appealing option for children. Instead opt for non-food rewards such as extra pocket money, or a new toy etc.
Moreover, you shouldn’t use junk food as a bargaining chip either, i.e. by telling him he can have an ice cream if he eats his vegetables first. This would do more harm than good as your child would find processed foods more appealing and healthy food alternatives less appealing.

4. Lead by example
In order for your child to eat healthily, you need to lead by example. Limit your own consumption of junk food first. If you want to take your child away from junk food, you need to be a role-model yourself. Furthermore, it is good to include your child on your plans for healthy eating as it allows them to have a say in what they would and wouldn’t like to eat instead of foodstuffs being imposed on them. Make a meal plan together to figure out healthier eating alternatives for your child.

5. Teach moderation to your child
Don’t completely ban junk food as this move can backfire. This is because, by doing so, the moment your child gets the opportunity to have junk food items, he will most likely overindulge. On the other hand, teach him about moderation and the importance of having small quantities of this type of food from time to time.
Teaching your child to eat healthily is not an easy task, but is also not impossible to achieve. With a little bit of guidance and perseverance, you can easily achieve the goal of keeping your child away from junk foods.

Hi if your belly is lowering your self-confidence and giving you sleepless nights, here are the tips to give you flatter and fitter tummy. 1. Add fiber to your diet constipation distends your belly, add veggies and fruits to your daily diet to relieve you of constipation, reduce intakes of refined cereals like maida, noodles, pasta and whole grains instead add dalia and oats. This would relieve you of constipation and bloat to give you a flat tummy. 2. Decrease sodium intake sodium retains water in the body and hence your belly swells up, reduce intake of junk food as it contains a lot of sodium. Stop adding extra salt to dishes, also packaged and processed food contains a lot of salts so better avoid it. 3. Increase potassium foods rich in potassium help you get rid of balancing sodium, fruits are very good source of potassium, adding them to their daily diet not only provides this nutrient but also increase the fiber content of your daily intake 4. Avoid sugar alcohols we do not completely digest these low-calorie sweeteners usually found in flavoured low-calorie drinks, diabetic and sugar-free foods. Probiotic curds include low fat curd in your diet regime as it contains live bacteria which tame bloating by increasing intestinal motility. 8. Method of cooking no doubt salads and sprouts are good for our health but if experience distension with them then saute, blanch or steam them also fried foods are best to be avoided not only because of their high-calorie content but also because frying leads to changes in oil composition which may result in bloating. 9. Avoid chewing gums and candies while chewing them air enters our digestive system, giving us feeling of bloating, also candies are zero in nutrition but contain loads of calories. Also, eat slowly as gulping down increases air passage to the digestive system 10. Individual tolerances some individuals are more intolerant to certain foods like radish, capsicum, tea, cauliflower etc, so with your own personal experience omit them from your diet.

His weight is a little high, but that is not a big worry. And normally, children learn to stand with support by eleven months and learn to stand and walk without support by 12 to 18 months. I think your friends son is okay, nothing to worry about or panic about.

Nothing except exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months of age. Approximate wt at this age should be 7 kg. Maintain wt appropriate for the age by mother's milk now and later by balanced nutritious diet.

Bed wetting in small children not only required medicines but a proper management is also required from your side.In order to control bed wetting problem of your child you must have proper knowledge of the exact reason of this problem. Actually normally a normal human being can retain urine in his bladder even for hours even if bladder is full because our mind controls the opening of Bladder valve.But sometimes this control breaks due to some reasons in elderly like old age,Uterine prolapse or displacement in females,Diabetes to name a few.But in small school going children it is a common problem and in majority of cases in children while sleeping the contact between their mind and bladder is broken and this is the reason why children cant feel their bedwetting problem even after urinating and continue with their sleep.There are a number of factors which leads to this problem but the main being Worms ,Excessive cold,Weak nervous system due to which whenever bladder fill slightly with urine,it exerts pressure on the valvular opening and while sleeping their mind-bladder control is not working,slight pressure on valve make it open and urine passes out without knowledge of the child.In some children this can happen while they are awake also. So our main aim while treating is to 1.set up a control betweem Mind and bladder 2.Try to remove all the causative factors 3.Try to make pass the urine of the child before hand time to time during the day so that there is no urine left in bladder so that no pressure is exerted on U.bladder valve. 4.Start giving medicines which will set up a contact between Mind and Bladder valve. 5.To start Pelvic Floor Muscles Stregthening exercises called KEGELS EXERCISE in teenage children and Mature people as small children cant do these exercises. Homoeopathic treatment R-74 Drops ( Dr Reckeweg) Drink 5 drops in 1 spoon fresh water 3 times daily ENUROSAN or BOOUME 42 ( BIOFORCE) Drink 1 spoon twice daily Before starting the above 2 medicines first give below given medicine for 5 days and start the above medicines from 6th day D-WORM ( ADVEN) Drink 1 spoon twice daily for 5 days.Finish the bottle. Repeat the above medicines for 3 months. Management by Parents during this course 1.Stop all fluids at night 2 hours before sleep like water,milk,and fluids of all kind including liquid vegetables. 2.For first 45 days set up an alarm in the middle of night 30 minutes before when you think that the probability of your child urinating during sleep at that particular time is high.Make this time adjustments in next few days and void urine of your child at that time to relieve Bladder valve from pressure.It is difficult but you have to do it for your child. 3.See that your child doesnot put on weight by letting him eat fatty food and cold drinks.

My son has developed some kind of black material (dried up skin) on his body (at few places on chest and back) from the age of 3years and now he is 12 years. There is no itching n pain. If you feel excessive sleep or tiredness/ head spinning or vertigo like feeling you have to make sure you have no anaemia or hypothyroidism by doing a blood CBC & TSH and inform me directly 10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. Try to locate yourself so you are facing potential distractions such as doors, phones or windows. This way you can take a glance to assess sounds that would otherwise break your focus. 3) Clarify Objectives Know what your goal is clearly before you start. If you aren’t sure what the end result is, the confusion will make it impossible to focus. 4) Divide Blobs. If you have a large project that needs work, clearly identify a path that you will use to get started working on it. If the sequence of actions isn’t obvious, it will be difficult to concentrate. Taking a few minutes to plan not only your end result, but the order you will complete any steps, can save hours in wasted thinking. 5) Know the Rules Get clear on what the guidelines are for the task ahead. What level of quality do you need? What standards do you need to follow? What constraints are there? If the rules aren’t clear from the outset, you will slip out of concentration as you ponder them later. 6) Set a Deadline Deadlines have both advantages and disadvantages when trying to force concentration. A deadline can make it easier to forget the non-essential and speed up your working time. If you give yourself only an hour to design a logo, you will keep it simple and avoid fiddling with extravagant designs. Time limits have disadvantages when they cause you to worry about the time you have left instead of the task itself. 7) Break down Roadblocks Roadblocks occur whenever you hit a tricky problem in your work. This can happen when you run out of ideas or your focus wavers. Break down roadblocks by brainstorming or planning on a piece of paper. Writing out your thought processes can keep you focused even if you might become frustrated. 8) Isolate Yourself Become a hermit and stay away from other people if you want to get work done. Unless your work is based on other people they will only break your focus. Create a private space and refuse to talk to anyone until your work is finished. Put a sign on your door to steer away drop-ins and don’t answer your phone. 9) Healthy Body, Sharper Mind What you put into your body affects the way you concentrate. Nobody would expect peak performance if they showed up drunk to work. But if you allow yourself to get chronic sleep deprivation, overuse stimulants like caffeine or eat dense, fatty foods your concentration will suffer. Try to cut out one of your unhealthy habits for just thirty days to see if there is a difference in your energy levels. I’ve found even small steps can create dramatic changes in my ability to focus. 10) Be Patient Before I write an article, I often sit at my desk for a fifteen or twenty minutes before I put finger on the keyboard. During this time I feel a strong urge to leave or do something else. But I know that if I am patient, I’ll stumble upon an idea to write about and enter a state of flow. Without a little patience, you can’t take advantage of flow when it rushed through you. If you need strong concentration I recommend periods of 90-120 minutes. Any less than that and you will waste too much time getting started before the flow can continue. More than this is possible to sustain focus, but you will probably benefit from a quick break. These are the general guidelines for concentration, studying well or doing your job. Regards.

It`s a natural reflex don`t worry, what is her weight. Give only mother`s milk up to 6 months of age then supplement home cooked food and continue mother`s milk minimum up to 2 years. Formula feeds I don`t recommend.

My cousin is 7 years old. She keeps on scratching her urinary area in a cloth only at night till sleeping (for past 2-3 years). Why is the child doing like that? What is the reason? Does she have any infection? We have used dettole but still no use.

Its a behavioral problem seen in few children, console him. Ofcourse it can be due to infection, get him thoroughly investigate for urine and ultrasound kub (kidney ureter and bladder) some times a urinary stone can also cause it. Otherwise don't worry much.

Give syp ondem 5 ml tds. And stop flagyl it sometimes cause nausea and vomitting. Try natural remedy like tulsi and hing.

Dear Mr. lybrate-user, It is advisable to consult an expert paediatrician. He will help you better. As for safe health of babies and child's health it is better to consult a paediatrician instead of self medication. Don't take risk. Ask mother to take care of her health and her child both.

My daughter has complete 9 month old. Her born weight is 2.1 kg on born at 8th month pregnancy. She has complete 9 moth but her weight is till 5.1 kg. Also sleeping time is less of her. Sleep only in night n day time she can not sleep. But main issue is for her body weight. She eat at regular time to time. So please advise best solution for her.

Babies born in 8th month are very much prone to these problems which are finished by the passage of time. U give her normal n natural nourishment n a proper care. She will be normal after some months. Any Baby tonic like Gripe Water will work good for her. Save her from cold properly.

My child is 3.5 months old and the colour of his stool is green and watery. We gave him walmycin antibiotic and zinc but there is no effect. Kindly suggest best medicine. Can we give him 1/4 sachet of sporlac for clearing bacteria? Please suggest us the best as we are worried about our son.

If your baby is on exclusive mothers milk then colour consistency and frequency of stool does not matter as long as your baby is alert active taking feed and gaining weight. No medicine is required. This is also known as breast milk diarrhoea.

Hi, my kid is of 1.7 yrs old but he didn't started uttering words more than ma' ma n ba' ba' da' da, he delivered by lscs n a month before od edd, till now growth and development is good, he weighs 12kg, walks and moves at a pace, last month he'd seizures during fever but recovery was good, what could be the reason and what steps to be taken to get him talk, our 1st kid was good at sharing at his age.

It could be a febrile seizure. Where you have to be watchful for fever as it has a tendency to recur. However no treatment is needed for first seizure but detail evaluation should be done.
