Zinc Deficiency - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

BHMS, Certificate in Gynaecology & Obestric, MD - Homeopathy, Ph.D Homeopathy
Homeopath, Delhi

Causes:

  • Diet poor in zinc - inadequate intake of zinc rich foods like meat, shell fish, liver gelatin, beans, rice, bread, cereals lentils etc.
  • Strict vegetarians: their main foods are grains and legumes which are high in phytic acid and they hamper the absorption of zinc from the food.
  • Malabsorption syndrome.
  • Chron`s disease / ulcerative colitis.
  • Chronic liver disease.
  • Chronic renal disease.
  • Sickle cell disease.
  • Diabetes.
  • Malignancies.
  • Smoking and high alcohol consumption.
  • Elderly are more prone to deficiency.

Sign and symptoms:

  • Reduced appetite.
  • Retarded growth.
  • Atrophy (shrinkage) of sexual organs.
  • Loss of hair.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Repiratory tract infection.
  • Keratosis (desquamation) of tongue.
  • Skin affections.
  • Dwarfism.
  • Cognitive impairment.
  • Infertility- low sperm count.
  • Delayed healing of wounds.
  • Decreased taste acuity.
  • Deficiency during pregnancy can cause abnormal labor and retarded fetal growth.
  • Increased risk of infection.

Dietary management:
Consume:
Consume foods rich in zinc: zinc is present in wide variety of foods especially along with proteins. Vegetarian diet contains less zinc compared to meat based diet. Best sources of zinc are -

  • Beef, crabmeat, oysters, lamb, pork, turkey, salmon, shellfish, chicken, clams, lobster, milk, yoghurt and cheese cheddar.
  • Whole wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice, spinach, lentils, beans, lima beans, rye bread, peas and baked potatoes. Meat, eggs and seafood.
  • Other sources of zinc are - green leafy vegetables, sea plants, japanese sea plants, yeast, nuts - cashews, almonds and peanuts, seeds - sesame and pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are one of the concentrated sources of zinc in vegetarian food.
  • Only 20% of the zinc present in diet is absorbed by our body, dietary fibers and phytic acid present in food inhibits absorption of zinc. Phytic acid and fiber are fond in foods like - bran, whole grain cereals, pulses and nuts.
  • Cooking process can reduce the effects of phytic acid and fibers on the absorption of zinc.
  • Ferment whole grains as enzymatic actions of yeast reduces the levels of phytic acid and thus absorption of zinc is adequate.

How can I get rid of backache and laziness as I work 11 hours daily sitting in front of computer.

MS - Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Pune
How can I get rid of backache and laziness as I work 11 hours daily sitting in front of computer.
Back pain that is associated with day time sedentary jobs like computer professional s are associated with paraspinal muscle spasms. The best way to tackle this sort of pain is to do well spaced stretching exercises of the back, back extension exercises, using hot water bags to provide relief and avoiding stooping posture while sitting. Posture also plays a very important part in back pain, always maintain a straight posture while sitting. While getting up from the bed try to first go on your left or right side of the body and get up side ways. Avoid cruntches or sit-ups: they may increase the pressure on your back and may predispose to slip disc. Always maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of regular brisk walking, meditation, eating healthy. P. S: try to avoid pain killers (analgesics) as much as possible as many are associated with side effects that you may not be aware of. Stay healthy. Stay happy god bless you.

Keep a ready stocks of fruits, raw veggies and nuts with you. Before having your main meals, just have a large serving of these. This will make you 50% full. Subsequently take your regular meals with 70% cooked vegetables and 30% cooked carbs like rice or wheat based foods. Reduce SOS (Sugar, Oil & Salt) based foods. Our body does not need them as we can easily get them from natural foods. Also reducing milk products help a lot with weight loss.

Hye. Thankyou for the query. Firstly, you are not underweight. For your height, your ideal weight is 48 kgs. Secondly, no single food can cause weight gain. It is not about a single isolated remedy but an all round diet that will help maintain weight. If you concentrate on only a single food or food group chances are that you will just bloat. You want to gain good muscle mass, not just fats. Any fruit including bananas should be a part of a well balanced diet. Also exercise along with a good diet plan will help maintain good weight.

I am suffering from hair fall in front and bone pain in some days. Please suggest me something.

I am suffering from hair fall in front and bone pain in some days. Please suggest me something.
Hello lybrate-user You have mentioned two different conditions in your query but it is likely that they could be linked. Hairfall has quite a few reasons such as prolonged illness, stress, improper diet, scalp infection, use of hair gels, hormonal disturbance, anemia etc. Bone pains can be due to weakness or viral infection. To determine cause a detailed consultation is essential which will help decide medicine and further course of action. In the meantime, maintain proper diet, eat regular meals rich in protein and iron such as curd, paneer, sprouts, fish, eggs etc For any more questions please feel free to contact me.
