There are no chances of pregnancy, don't worry. Always remember to use condom during sex to avoid pregnancy and STD or AIDS.

Me and my gf had sex on 18th DEC. We used condoms. But after that she got period on 5 the or 6th of Jan which was her normal date. But it lasted for only one day which happened for the first time in her life. Usually she used to have 4-5 days of period. From yesterday also she is having some vaginal discharge. So are these indications that she is pregnant? What are the ways to confirm it?

My age is 35 and planning to get married by thus year. What things I need to take care so that I do not have any problem in my pregnancy. I know I am very late but it can be possible to have healthy pregnancy now also?

General Physician,

Hi lybrate-user With advancement in medical technologies, and high level of awareness amongst women, age is no longer the biggest concern as long as expectant mothers carefully plan their pregnancies with utmost prenatal care.  1 Consistent prenatal care Whenever you get pregnant have regular check-ups. A proper prenatal care will include screenings, tests, counseling and thorough knowledge about the different symptoms and risks. These tests would include checking your blood pressure, blood sugar and urine samples for the amount of protein and sugar to detect any ailments. Be regular with prenatal tests: With advancing age, the risk of pregnancy complications can increase, including the chances of having an ectopic pregnancy. The prenatal tests suggested by your doctor are vital in keeping track of any health-related troubles like birth defects concerning the baby. These will help you in getting any such problems treated without any delay. More invasive tests like Amniocentesis can detect chromosomal birth defects up to 90% accuracy. Take prenatal vitamins: Whether you are trying to conceive, or have already tested positive, you must take prenatal vitamins as advised by your doctor. Usually doctors advise supplement consisting of minimum 400 mcg folic acid daily. The amount of folic acid requirement can vary from woman to woman. It is best to start prenatal vitamins at least 3 months prior to trying for conception. These vitamins will help in lowering the risk of any brain or spinal cord related defect in the baby. It is even more vital for older women as their babies are more susceptible to these diseases. Ensure a healthy diet: Eat a well-balanced diet comprising of fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk products, cereals etc. In addition, include calcium-rich products in your diet for stronger bones and teeth. Since folic acid is vital for the healthy growth of the baby in your womb, you can add some citrus fruits and dried beans in your meals. Quit smoking & cut down your alcohol consumption: Apart from following a nourishing diet, you need to stay away from alcohol and cigarettes. Smoking and drinking alcohol during your pregnancy can lead to birth defects in your child. Smoking can lead to low birth weight in newborn babies, and increase the chances of preeclampsia. Exercise frequently: Be regular with some kind of exercise routine. Mild exercises like yoga, walking and stretch-outs can help you to stay fit, stress-free, active and healthy during your entire term of pregnancy. Consult your doctor before starting with your workout schedule as some women are recommended to avoid certain exercises due to some health conditions. Maintaining ideal weight: It is important to gain an ideal amount of weight during your pregnancy as it helps to reduce the risk of preterm delivery, and slow growth of your baby. There is also less risk of developing pregnancy-related ailments like high blood pressure and gestational diabetes. If you normally have a healthy BMI, you would gain 11-15 kg during your term of nine months. On the other hand, if you were overweight before conceiving, you should aim to gain around 7-12 Kg.

Please tell me the name of a numbing gel/cream I really don't want to feel any pain for first time intercourse I want to use it for the first time. I am a virgin and married. I want to use numbing gel/cream to numb hymen ONLY FOR FIRST TIME so that my partner can penetrate and after that we will start proper intercourse after 20-30 min when my hymen will become normal, I don't want any suggestions that "first time it will pain" "don't be afraid, try long foreplay" etc. Because we have tried all but whenever he tries to penetrate I feel lot of pain so we stop. My married life is in danger please please I beg you help me tell me name of a numbing gel/cream to numb my hymen only for first time. Hope someone will understand my situation and tell me name of gel or cream.

MBBS
General Physician,

Hi lybrate-user, Understand the situation Whether the first time or the millionth your vagina is no different, it’s designed to have sex without pain as when aroused it will relax, lubricate, open and increase in size, as it’s flexible it will also stretch to accommodate a penis and then return to normal after sex.  Most commonly if sex hurts the first time it is due to the woman not being ready, either not emotionally ready so tensing-up or not physically ready so not aroused enough for penetration. This means penetration is forced, causing pain and damage which increases risk of STDs and infection, your vagina is not designed to make sex unpleasant or harmful, it’s designed for pleasure.  Use more foreplay, ideally orgasm at least once before intercourse, and use lubrication if/when needed, go slowly and communicate with your partner. Enjoy sex without penetration for a while and if that develops into intercourse, if he can slide himself easily into you during foreplay then carry on like that - allow some natural progression, rather than stopping and saying 'Now it is time for penetration' take pressure off by letting it happen naturally.  The only possible difference to your vagina would be if your hymen is intact - which is rare as by the time you have sex it’s likely to have worn away, stretched or torn from foreplay or masturbation – sex doesn’t necessarily tear your hymen as it can stretch, even if it tears it doesn’t always hurt. If you believe the myth that sex hurt the first time then you NEED to educate yourself a lot more about how your vagina works and about sex before you have sex, these are basic things someone of your age and someone who is about to have sex should know. Learn how to prevent possible pain rather than accepting it as inevitable, because it's really not. If you are nervous then this will also help ease those nerves (nerves can make sex painful) because you'll know what to expect and how to prevent problems such as pain during sex - knowledge combats fear.  Dear, reason I am not suggesting you any numbing cream because it would be dangerous as you can't feel when damage is being done - this means you cannot stop him when he's causing you harm, so he may cause even more harm putting you at higher risk of infection and STD's, also when the numbing cream wears off the pain may remain.  If you want you can use lubricant but avoid numbness cream Thanks.

Hello Lybrate user, simple food (avoid spices), fruits (avoid raw papaya and pineapple), milk, and 2- 3 almonds would be good and healthy during first trimester. If morning sickness is intolerable then opt for homeopathic treatment for morning sickness. It's very safe, natural and very effective treatment. Message Back for online homeopathic consultation.

Hi, Please suggest Pregnancy diet in third trimester. I am in Andra Pradesh India.
Continue to take prenatal vitamins. Stay active unless you're experiencing swelling or pain. Work out your pelvic floor by doing Kegel exercises. Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, low-fat forms of protein, and fiber. Drink lots of water. Eat enough calories (about 300 more calories than normal per day).

Uterine Fibroids - Can Abdomen Swelling Be A Side Effect of It?

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics & Gynecology, Fellowship in Infertility (IVF Specialist)

Uterine Fibroids - Can Abdomen Swelling Be A Side Effect of It?

Many women develop uterine fibroids by the time they hit the age of 50 years and above. These are non-cancerous growths that may occur in the uterus. Most women go through severe bleeding and pain as well as discomfort as a result of these fibroids. Age, family history of the same condition, obesity or being overweight, eating habits and even ethnicity play a large role in deciding the risk of each individual patient. These fibroids can grow in the submucosal, intramural and subserosal areas.

Following are the common side effects of uterine fibroids:

  1. Frequent urination: Due to the pressure of the fibroids on the uterus, the patient may experience a constant feeling of fullness in the lower pelvic area of the body, which may lead to frequent filling of the bladder. This gives rise to frequent trips to the washroom for urination.
  2. Heavy Bleeding: Severe bleeding is one of the most common causes of the presence of these kinds of fibroids. The patient may experience a lot of bleeding during menstrual periods, as well as pain and cramps the rest of the time. The periods will also be very painful when there are fibroids in the uterus or the uterine lining.
  3. Painful Intercourse: It is a well-known fact that any kind of infection or growth as well as sores and other such ailments can lead to vaginal dryness as well as pain during sexual intercourse. This is true for uterine fibroids as well, which can lead to severe pain during sexual activity. These fibroids can also give rise to pain in the lumbar or lower back region.
  4. Abdomen Swelling: The abdomen may go through significant swelling in such a condition and the patient may even look like she is pregnant. The growth can push the shape of the abdomen outwards and create a full feeling.
  5. Pregnancy Complications: The presence of uterine fibroids can give rise to several complications during pregnancy and even after child birth. One of the most common problems in this case is bleeding, followed by more severe outcomes like miscarriage. The women suffering from uterine fibroids are at greater risk of undergoing a caesarean section for the delivery of the baby. The baby may also be born breech and a premature delivery may take place.
  6. Infertility: This is also a rare side effect of the uterine fibroids and is generally seen only in very severe cases.
  7. Cancer: Only one in every 1000 cases might transform into malignant tumours. These uterine fibroids are generally known to be non-malignant.

Any symptoms must be reported to a gynaecologist at the earliest to avoid any serious complications.
