Dhat Syndrome: Loss of Calcium in Urine

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Srinagar
Dhat Syndrome: Loss of Calcium in Urine

Many persons report to doctors complaining about weakness, backache, loss of energy and other vague symptoms attributing these all to the loss of calcium and sometime semen with urine. How do they get to this conclusion? They may have noticed ‘white discharge (particularly in morning sample) in urine, they leak few drops of white discharge while talking to women (talking over phone included) or thinking about them, their neighborhood ‘test wala’ (lab technician) report their urine containing a few calcium carbonate crystals (anyways its almost always same test wala or ‘medical wala’ (medical store owner) who orders their urinalysis in first instance), they suffer (as per them) from frequent night emissions associated with wet dreams or without wet dreams and so on (list is exhaustive).
This is precipitated and perpetuated by commonly held belief about extreme preciousness of semen in sub-continental cultures including ours. This is based on an old hindu belief that it takes forty drops of blood to create a drop of bone marrow and forty drops of bone marrow to create a drop of sperm (wikipedia). These persons usually spend good amount of resources for treatment of ‘calcium or semen loss’ without much success.
This is actually a neuro-asthenic syndrome first described by professor (dr) narendra wig as ‘dhat syndrome’.
Females also suffer from an equivalent syndrome characterized by excessive vaginal discharge or leucorrhea, which is again considered a" precicious fluid.
Reassurance and proper education is the mainstay of treatment. Many times counseling, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications are needed.

7 Tips to Maintain Urological Health

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS, MBBS
Urologist, Delhi
7 Tips to Maintain Urological Health

The urinary system in both men and women are susceptible to infections and many other internal disorders. Although many of the disorders may be caused due to underlying diseases or hereditary causes, many others may be caused due to bad life style habits as well as personal hygiene issues. Personal hygiene issues will not only lead to infections, but if left unchanged, may cause more serious problems such as tumors overtime. However, with the help of some basic tips and following some daily routine, you can ensure good urological health overtime. Some of these are mentioned below:

  1. Drink plenty of water daily: This is applicable to both men and women and it is important, especially in a country like India where hot and humid conditions prevail for most of the time. A common figure quoted most of the time is 2 to 3 liters of water daily although this is quite arbitrary and may change from person to person and climate to climate. What is important is that you should remain hydrated and calculate an ideal amount of water consumption. This is necessary to stop stone formation in the gallbladder, kidney, ureter and other areas of the genitourinary system.
  2. Cleaning tips for men: It is important to ensure proper hygiene for good penile health. Uncircumcised males should retract their foreskin while taking a bath and clean out the smegma or white accumulations from around the glans. This will reduce the chances of inflammations and urinary tract infections from occurring. Circumcised males should thoroughly wash the penis as well to keep it clean.
  3. Regular ejaculation: Men are advised to ejaculate regularly either through masturbation or through sexual stimulation as it is beneficial in many ways. Ejaculation helps clear the tracts, exercises the prostate and also keeps the pattern of proper blood flow to the penis active. It maintains urological health as well as you sexual health.
  4. Don’t hold your urine for too long: Although this is especially applicable for women, it can be bad for men too. Holding the urine within your body for too long may result in an infection and may also make your bladder muscles weaker resulting in urinary incontinence later in life. Women, especially should be careful as they have a shorter urethra leading from the bladder and thus are more prone to getting urinary tract infections in this manner.
  5. Avoid harsh soaps and use milder ones to regularly cleanse the groin area: The groin is one of the moistest areas, as it remains covered up most of the time. This makes it an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. It is important that you clean this area every day thoroughly with mild soap. Also, after urination, women should wipe front to back i.e. from the opening of the vagina towards the anus while wiping down after urinating or cleaning. This is to ensure that fecal bacteria don’t get into the vagina as it can cause a host of infections.
  6. Tips for sexual intercourse: It is important for both men and women to urinate, wash and clean after sexual intercourse as this can help clean the bacteria that may have come from one partner’s genitals into the other. Women should especially follow this advice as it can help keep many infections at bay.
  7. Changes in certain foods: Reduce caffeine intake through tea or coffee as it can irritate your bladder. It can also act as a diuretic which makes you urinate frequently. This will result in your bladder becoming weaker. Also reduce salt intake as it can increase blood pressure and end up damaging the kidney to the point of permanent kidney damage or kidney failure.

Shirodhara - Problems It Can Treat!

Shirodhara - Problems It Can Treat!

If you are looking for an ideal body therapy with health benefits, you should try Shirodhara. It is an effective and unique Ayurvedic body therapy having great impact on your nervous system. Shirodhara directly and immediately helps in calming, relaxing and cleansing your mind and nerves.

Procedure
Before the procedure, your head is massaged using appropriate oils for almost 10 minutes. A whole body massage may be needed depending on your condition. You need to lie on your back on the Shirodhara table and a small pillow will be kept for support under your neck. Your therapist will put oil in the Shirodhara pot and pour it on your forehead and head. A continuous stream of oil will be poured and the pot is oscillated from one side to the other of your forehead. After this, the oil is recollected from the table, reheated and the entire procedure is carried out again.

Benefits of Shirodhara
Shirodhara is an ideal treatment for people with nervous system problems. The symptoms of stress, anxiety, fatigue and hypertension are cured using this therapy. Your mood is regulated and you feel happy and relaxed.

The following health conditions are also assisted by Shirodhara therapy:

  1. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD: One should try to reduce the excess vata dosha, which is the dosha that becomes imbalanced because of PTSD. Shirodhara undertaken using nervine herbs is very beneficial for relieving PTSD symptoms.
  2. Insomnia: Shirodhara is very effective in curing sleeping problems, especially when carried out using herbs. Shirodhara using milk is also efficient in treating insomnia. The pineal glands get stimulated and melatonin is produced, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle.
  3. Jet Lag: In case you fly frequently and your daily sleep pattern is out of sync, you suffer from a condition called jet lag. Shirodhara helps in restoring your normal sleep pattern and removes accumulated fatigue. While travelling, you should apply Vata oil or Bhringaraj oil on your forehead.
  4. Hypertension and others: Shirodhara is very effective in lowering the blood pressure. It is also good for you in maintaining proper health in general. Deep relaxation is promoted, fatigue is relieved and the body and mind get reinvigorated. Shirodhara also helps in balancing your energy levels and if you require relaxation, the therapy will fully satisfy your needs. Shirodhara aids in boosting your body’s immune system and balances the Ayurvedic mind-body types or doshas. Excessive thoughts and worrying are also eased as a result of this therapy. Your face is rejuvenated and worry lines are corrected.

Shirodhara is a totally natural procedure with no side effects on the body. Appropriate diagnosis of your condition, mesdicines and Shirodhara together helps you in recovering from all diseases as most of the diseases are Psychosomatic. Kindly consult me personally on Lybrate to know the best regimen and Shirodhara type for you.

Hello Lybrate User, If you are underweight, then you want to gain a balanced amount of muscle mass and subcutaneous fat, not a bunch of unhealthy belly fat. Therefore, it is absolutely very important to eat mostly healthy foods even if you are trying to gain weight. Follow this tips to gain weight and to be healthy - * You need to eat more calories than your body burns in order to gain weight. * Protein forms the building blocks of your muscles. Eating sufficient protein is required to gain muscle weight instead of just fat. * High-protein foods include meats, fish, eggs,  many dairy products, legumes, nuts and others. * In order to gain weight, eat at least 5 meals per day and make sure to eat plenty of fat, carbs and protein. * Don’t drink water before meals. This can fill your stomach and make it harder to get in enough calories. * Drink milk. Drinking whole milk to quench thirst is a simple way to get in more high-quality protein and calories. * Get enough sleep. Sleep for 7 to 8 hours. If possible take afternoon nap for half an hour. * Do exercise - Go to a gym and lift, 3-4 times per week. Lift heavy, and try to increase the weights and volume over time. Take care.

How to gain my body I want to increase my weight in short time can you help me you all.

How to gain my body I want to increase my weight in short time can you help me you all.
Hye, Thanks for the query. Firstly understand weight gain can't be hurried. Weight gain is very dependent on genetics and metabolism along with your daily diet and exercise routine. It is important to know that just eating just two heavy meals a day will not help. Weight gain is all about taking more calories than you burn. Eating the right foods at the right time is very important. There is no one food that helps weight gain. Eat meals at frequent intervals. You need to eat at least 6 main and mid meals a day. Eat a mid meal between each main meal. Avoid junk foods. Include dairy, eggs, nuts, fruits, dry fruits, starchy vegetables, rice, bread, whole grain cereals, smoothies, masala milk, ghee, cream in your meals. Just eating sugary, sweet foods is not good. Try to have healthy deserts like kheer, chikki or lassi. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Exercise at least thrice a week. It helps development of muscle mass and improves appetite. Even if you were to take just medicines or supplements they will not work in isolation. You need to have a calorie and nutrient dense meal and good exercise routine, it's crucial.

Start your day with the higher calorie foods such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, dairy product. Dry fruits contain more calories than the fresh fruits. Avoid junk food. Add healthy fats to your diet, starchy vegetables like sweet potato, corn etc. Also, check with doctor as it could be due to certain health problems or having a very high metabolism.

Hello. There are few reasons of being underweight. It can be due to lack of physical activity, hereditary, eating disorders and chronic diseases Mainly an underweight person will have lower immunity levels and can easily fall prey to illness and infections and moreover the rate of recovery in underweight people is slower than in healthy individuals. Eat your meals on time and add 500 calories. The amount of calories you take in should be more than the amount of calories you burn. Never skip your breakfast.(always prefer homemade food) Sleep on time. If you sleep late, that eventually disturbs hormones in your body. Basically it is important to sleep before midnight because that sleep is known to be the healing sleep for the body but unfortunately due to our lifestyles most of the people don't get it these days. Also gets 7 to 8 hours of sleep each day. Avoid junk food at any cost. Eat calorie dense food (which includes calorie dense milk shakes). Gaining weight involves consistent eating. Increase your portion size. If for example you usually eat 3 chapatis, then start eating 4th one.

My wife Blood group is B negative. An...
The first one is expected date of delivery as per the last menstrual period, and the second one is expected date of delivery as per the parameters shown in Ultrasound. We go by the EDD by Ultrasound as the earlier one sometimes is variable by a week or so, depending on the exact time and date when she actually conceived. You would be guided to take an inj Anti D ,when you visit your gynae. And it is safe both for the mother and the baby. Usually we give one in 28th wk and the other in 34 th wk. It is especially needed for your subsequent pregnancies, as if the first baby has a positive blood group ,there are some antibodies which are released in mother's blood ,which can be harmful to the next baby.

Shivaniji, Thanks for the query. Looking at your weight and height it is clear that you have grade 1 obesity with a BMI of 31.07 kgs/M2 (normal <23 kgs/M2). For a prediabetic it is absolutely essential to maintain near normal weight (about 66 kgs), plus exercise daily for over 1 hour then take a healthy and balanced diet that provides exact calories based on your ideal body weight. Plus avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, sweetened aerated drinks (olas), bakery items and foods made out of maida. Avocado is a good fruit, can be had. Thanks.
