Carrot juice is very effective in reducing fat from your body. •Take one or two fresh carrots and peel off its outer skin. •Now put the carrots in a juice blender and extract its juice. •Drink a glass of carrot juice every day in the morning. •You can also include carrots in your daily salad mixture or eat as raw carrots or can even have it steam cooked with other vegetables every day to see a visible weight loss.

Random blood sugar below 140 means you are in perfect health. So no need to worry. You can try to reduce high Carbs from your diet and instead take complex carbohydrates. You can refer to something called Glycemic Index ( G.I. Index) of foods for selecting and managing your diet.

MD - Consultant Physician

How much is the PPBS? If it is less than 180 mg% then it's fine. It's more important to see what your HBA1C is. If that is close to 7, then it's sufficient.

I am 14 years old and I have thyroid disorder I take 75 mg. Of thyroxine med, please suggest me what diet should I take daily?

CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology, MBBS
Endocrinologist,
Mr. lybrate-user, There is no special diet for hypothyroidism. Only thing is a few foods need to be avoided like - soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard, coffee. Also should avoid bakery items and other foods made from maida. Always whole grain products and whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Consume a good deal of fruits and green leafy vegetables. Take milk and milk products and eggs. Avoid red meat. Thanks.

Hi Since you are on treatment with thyroxine 125 mcg tablets, there is no need to do any separate testing. Just take iodinated salt. Since you already have hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is not functioning optimally. So it hardly matters. All the needs of thyroxine are being met by supplement. You should ensure that TSH level is maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. If that is not the case then dosage of thyroxine may have to be increased. Thanks.

I tried many doctor´s medicine for thyroid but no result. I seriously suffered the swelling during winter season. But in other season I am having only swelling.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, it is better if you give details of thyroid test results, like t3, t4 & tsh. Because if a person gets hypothyroidism, it will not go away. Hence, treatment has to be continued for lifetime. Symptoms of hypothyroidism are swelling of face & lower limbs, slow heart rate, early fatigue, tired feeling, intolerance to cold, joint pains, dry hair, dry skin, hair fall, menstrual irregularities, excess flow, difficulty in speech, inability to concentrate, inability to conceive, bad pregnancy outcomes and weight gain. So my advise to check thyroid hormones once again and report the same and if tsh levels are high, then treatment has to be restarted. Thanks.

I have diabetes since last 15 years and it is largely controlled but time and again it goes beyond the regulated limits. I am experiencing pain in my feet and maybe because of neuropathy, and there is also a sense of numbness. Lately is is seen that the third toe on my right leg has curved downward. Can you suggest treatment for the above and who should be consulted. Thanks/regards

M B B S, M. D (Internal Medicine)
General Physician, Nellore
If your glycated hemoglobin is within fair control, then you need not bother about occasional rises in the sugar levels. Neuropathic pains are treated symptomatically. They are expected to happen after so many years. Do not worry about your toe. I think it is only age-related changes in the joints.

My HBa1c is 5.7 which I tested yesterday & it was 6.1 about 4 months before. Fasting sugar ranges b/w 115~120. I have lost 15 kg since last one year. I am taking 500 mg glyciphage twice daily. Also, my stomach is bad (constipation) for 8-9 months. My sleep is also not fully relaxing for many years. But, last one year or so has been really bad interns of weight loss & continuous constipation. I tried homemade remedies but not much relief. Please advice if my sugar medication is the cause of my weight loss & how do I get rid of bad stomach which is troubling me the most. I am thinking of castor oil even to have some relief. Thanks in advance.

Hi Please avoid honey as it is another version of sugar. Sugar free has empty calories and has no nutrients in it. To satisfy your sweet tooth you can take fresh dates occasionally with normal control of blood sugars. Avoid 3 white ingredients from your diet list. SUGAR, RICE, REFINED FLOUR. Avoid carbohydrates, alcohol, butter, red meat, alcohol, breads, biscuits. Avoid fruits at bedtime and with your major meals. Always snack on your fruit. Most importantly apart from diet you need some medicines to control your blood sugar.

Gestational Diabetes - How It Can Be Treated?

MD - Diabetology, MBBS
Diabetologist, Surat
Gestational Diabetes - How It Can Be Treated?

Women tend to develop high levels of blood sugar during their pregnancy (especially within the 24th and 28th weeks), irrespective of whether they already had suffered from diabetes prior to their pregnancy. However, gestational diabetes, if not taken proper care of, might escalate the risks of developing diabetes in the near future for both the mother and the child, accompanied by complications in pregnancy or labor. Gestational diabetes is usually characterized by mild symptoms such as excessive urge to urinate, excessive thirst, blurred vision and fatigue.

Causes:
Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, allows for the utilization of the glucose for energy. The food consumed is broken down by the digestive tract of the body, converting carbohydrates into glucose before releasing it into the bloodstream. The glucose is then absorbed by the cells to be used as an energy source. Now, at the time of pregnancy, the placenta (organ nourishing the fetus) connecting the baby to the blood supply also produces various other hormones in high levels, for instance, estrogen and human placental lactogen. Most of these hinder the normal functioning of insulin in the cells, hence raising the blood sugar count. With subsequent growth of the baby, the placenta keeps on producing more amounts of such insulin resistant hormones to an extent that they are capable of meddling with the development of the baby.

Treatment:
1. Monitoring the blood sugar count at least four to five times a day and keeping it under control might help to ease the complication.
2. A healthy diet consisting of whole grains, vegetables and fruits in the right proportion and limiting sugar or other highly refined carbs meets the nutrition and fiber requirement of the body. Guard against additional weight gain during pregnancy as that hampers the entire process.
3. Exercise or regular physical activities help to normalize blood sugar level by boosting glucose absorption in the cells. Furthermore, exercises also enhance the sensitivity of the cells towards insulin. This means that only a little amount of insulin production by your body would be enough for the transportation of sugar.
4. Medication, If exercise and diet fall inadequate, insulin injections are often administered to control blood sugar count.
5. Keeping the baby under close observation with the help of repeated ultrasound and other tests to record its growth and development is an essential part of the treatment plan. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.
