Following are the tips to prevent onset/or control diabetes 1-Losing Extra Weight:-The most significant thing which can make a big difference to your health is to lose your extra weight. This will not only lower your blood pressure but also helps lowering your cholesterol too. For woman: waist of 80 cm or more & for man: waist of 90 cm or more are at risk 2- Constant and regular food timings :-the timings at which you have your meals should be set fixed and at regular intervals each day. This will considerably improve your metabolic activity and helps reducing your weight. 3- Split your meals and eating in moderate amount:-Splitting your meals into 3-4 times per day (including snacks)and eating in fair and consistent amount , improves your metabolic rate as the food u take is not concentrated at one time. 4- No long Gaps and skipping of meals:-There should be no long gaps between meals. Never miss out breakfast. 5- No overeating:-Never eat in a bulk on one time .Try to have moderate amount of food each time u eat. It will help maintain your blood sugar at a healthy level and won’t let it to fluctuate. Remember to eat your food slowly, chew well. 6- Proper Exercise and work outs:-Exercise is very important and a fast way to trim down calories, extra weight and controlling glucose level. Brisk walking for 30 min. atleast five times a week is the best and easiest way of exercising. You can also try Cycling, swimming, dancing. Timings for exercise should be fixed and regular. Avoid heavy exercise. Do not eat right away after a workout . 7-constant and regular timings for medication 8-Avoid fried foods and meat: Limit fats and sweets. Rather choose a variety of foods including whole grains, fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, low fat dairy products. 9- Take high-fibre and complex carbohydrates:-like oats as they are easily broken down to basic sugars. Add whole grain foods in your diet. Avoid carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, pizza , candies, and snacks .Instead include high-fiber carbohydrates like wheat bran, flaxseed and methi seeds to your wheat flour. This will increase fibre in your diet. 10-Drink enough fluids:-Keep your body well hydrated. Avoid chocolate, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat lots of vegetables. Walk for at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week. Most of these medicines are quite safe in the long term. However, nowadays, we don't prescribe daonil (glyburide) as often as in the earlier days. The reasons being, there are better alternatives available. Daonil, because of its long duration of action, can cause troublesome hypoglycemia that takes a long time to resolve.

I am giving details of glucose levels to decide whether a person has normal levels. 1) Normal: Fasting :70 to 110 mg/ 100 ml, PP <140 mgm HbA1c% <5.9 2) Pre - diabetes: FBS:108 to 125 mg, PP 141 to 199 mg, HbA1c% 5.9 to 6.4. 3) Diabetes: FBS:126 mg and above, PP 200 mg and above, HbA1c% 6.5 and above. If you have any doubts please come back. Thanks. Another aspect if you are thinking of having a baby then it is essential to get blood glucose properly checked.

Father is diabetic from the age of 30 years. Can the son aged 15 years who is under weight take normal diet including sweets and escape getting diabetes when he grows up. The child loves sweets but the mother is worried that he may get diabetes by eating sweets.

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
Why worry? just get son's b. Sugar and hba1c checked. Sweets may not harm for the diabetes part (if his b. Sugars are normal, but eating more of sweets may be due to underlying intestinal worm infestation. And vice versa. Get that treated first.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a self limiting disease. Acute phase can be managed with medicines. Physiotherapy helps in preventing contractures & deformities. Keep your moral up! any way take ibuprofen 200mg od & sos x 5days caldikind plus (mankind) 1tab odx10days you will need other supportive medicines also. Do knee exercises it may have to be further investigated make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. Do ask for detailed treatment plan. Do not ignore. I am 35 year old from last 7 month thyrox 100 continue but t3 t4 and tsh value bet normal shall I stop? 2) I am taking tab early morning after half an hrs started tea, breakfast shall I take tab any time in a day?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
The condition you are having hypothyroidism, where the hormone thyroxine (t4) is not properly produced by thyroid gland. Hence it has to be taken from outside and that too for patient's lifetime. The levels of t3, t4 & tsh are normal because of the treatment. So you can not stop it. Secondly the tablet has to be taken early morning and for two hours nothing should be taken after that. That is the requirement. If you do not follow that the benefits of treatment may not occur.

Dear lybrate user with the limited amount of information provided it appears that you are hypothyroid and pregnant. Your doctor has done the right thing by supplementing you medication because during pregnancy your thyroid state should be well controlled and upto 2.5 had you not been pregnant there was no need for medication. Continue with medication as advised and repeat your tsh levels every 4 weeks preferably during entire pregnancy. Hope that solves your query. Anything more then please feel free to revert.
