Hello, sir my father have been recovered from cancer that is 1st n 2nd stage in neck behind the tongue he has been recover last year by month of september'2014. But still now he is not getting any taste while eating anything. He cannot eat spicy things. Hello, I am inclined to believe that your father has undergone surgical procedure for a tongue cancer that had progressed to a 2nd stage! well let me try and explain to you in a very simple language about what has progressed and what cab be done. For a tonge cancer in the 2nd stage of neck nodal involvement the surgery involves the surgical removal of the affected part of the tongue with a safe margin of at least one centimeter around the lesion. Also due to the spread of the cancer cells to the neck lymph nodes even those have to be removed. This becomes an extensive procedure and some times the major part of the tongue needs to be removed. So a reconstruction of the tongue is planned where in some other body tissue is used to reconstruct the tongue. Also radiation therapy is also additionally given to the tongue area to completely kill the cancer cells. All these procedures will destroy some health cells also and majority of them which are on the surface are salivary cells which get destroyed. The nerves of the tongue also get affected and hence the loss of taste. The problem of dryness of the tongue will be persistent for a long time to come and there are chances even if very minute that these salivary glands might grow back and get back to normal function. But in the mean while he could use salivary substitutes that are available to keep his tongue moist. His taste sensation should also keep improving over time. Keep up the regular check ups with the doctor and ask him the details of the salivary substitute and the condition of the nerves supplying the tongue. Any queries I am willing to answer after you have given me more details about the procedure that was carried out. Thanks regards Dr. Siddharth bhalerao mds (oral and maxillofacial surgeon)

Eat nutritious diet and diet rich in vitamin b. Some times sharp edge of teeth may be the cause of recurrent mouth ulcer. Eat fibrous diet. Take vitamin b complex capsule for one week.

Make night time compulsory for your child.Use a non-fluoridated kids paste if the child has a habit of swallowing the paste while brushing.Just take a little pea sized quantity of the paste on the kids brush.Don't fill the brush with paste. It increases the risk of swallow and also adds to wastage rather than helping in brushing.

I have cavities in my teeth for last few years and always need tooth pick after eating food. I want to ho for filling but heard that it will need to be repeated every 1 year or so. Is it better to get filling or extract these molars? Does it hurt during filling? How long does the filling last? How soon can I start to eat after the filling? Thanks.

Filling do not hurt. There are many advanced matterial that last long. Go for it extraction is not a good option it is important to save your teeth, extraction can be done if there is no option to save tooth.

Get your teeth cleaned professionally by scaling and polishing. If you are not satisfied with the results go for bleaching of teeth. maintain oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and use mouthwash regularly.

I am 22 years girl. Now a new teeth grown 2-3 days before so pain my total mouth. What is the any solution of this problem?

BDS

It's not a new tooth. It's a wisdom tooth which comes after the age of 18 only. For wisdom tooth : If the wisdom tooth has erupted fully and in a proper position then we can save it by dental cement filling. If the cavity is deep and near or into the pulp then we can save it by root canal treatment. Ideally we should save natural tooth structure if its fits in above criterias. If the wisdom teeth has erupted in a such way that it's disturbing other tooth structures and we don't have any option left for saving it then only you should go for removal. The wisdom tooth usually causes pain because of its uneven position distrubing adjacent teeth and some times swelling of the tissues around the tooth causing pericoronitis ( i.e inflamation of the surrounding soft tissues ) causing pain. Wisdom tooth which is usually considered as an extra tooth having no role in mastication (i.e chewing of food) On other hand removal of wisdom tooth have much advantages rather than any disadvantage.. Retaining wisdom tooth some times results in food lodgement within and between adjacent tooth ,results in caries ( decay ) of the adjacent tooth. So for improper erupted wisdom tooth, removal is the only and best available option to the date. Which in turn also helps in preserving other tooth structures. Jay Swaminarayan.
