Arthritis - Know What Indicates It!

Ayurveda treatment for rheumatoid arthritis involves the removal of toxins from the body. These medicines are given to inhibit additional formation of Ama and even to improve the digestive system. Arthritic patients perform the Panchakarma massage to subside the pain caused due to arthritis. There are different types of arthritis and they include inflammatory arthritis, degenerative arthritis, metabolic arthritis, infectious arthritis and diagnosing arthritis. It is always better to get treatment for arthritis at the earliest as it causes a lot of pain in the joints. People of all age groups and races can suffer from arthritis and in America it is the prominent cause of disability. This joint disease occurs most commonly in women.

Indications of Arthritis

  1. The main indications that are caused due to arthritis include stiffness, pain due to swelling and the range of motion is also decreased.
  2. The pain in the joints can be severe or moderate and it can either worsen with time or remain the same.
  3. It becomes very difficult for an individual to perform their daily activities and at times individuals find it difficult to climb stairs.
  4. The damage caused due to arthritis can be seen on an X-ray. The joint disease can affect the eyes, lungs, kidneys, heart and even the skin.
  5. The inflammation caused due to arthritis can be reduced by use of essential oils, which are very effective.

Eat Healthy Foods to Reduce Pain
The disorder mainly involves pain in the joints and the two main types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteo arthritis. The joints are affected in different ways and it is very important to reduce the pain and have a healthy and nutritious diet. The stress on the joints can be alleviated by exercising regularly and losing weight. It is important that anti-inflammatory foods are included in the diet as these help fight the condition. The foods that are beneficial and help to fight arthritis include Omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts, oranges, sweet peppers, broccoli, carrots, whole wheat pasta, cherry tomatoes, spinach, grapefruit, and blueberries. Apricots, apples, turkey and sweet potato can also be eaten. Foods that are low in fat and free from trans-fat must be chosen.

Foods to Avoid
The arthritis joints are irritated by inflammation and it causes swelling of the tissues. Foods that trigger inflammation should be avoided and these include dairy products, refined carbs, processed meats, simple carbs, saturated fat, white rice, pastries and pasta. Products with sugar and unhealthy fats must be avoided. It is also equally important to exercise regularly to avoid pain in the joints.

It is possible to manage arthritis by regular physical activity and balancing the activity with proper rest. Over the counter medications can also be taken to reduce the inflammation and the best option is making use of cold and hot therapies. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Psoriasis - Can Your Genetics Be The Reason Behind It!

Psoriasis - Can Your Genetics Be The Reason Behind It!

It is a chronic autoimmune skin disease, in which the skin cells form a mass of scales. Usually, these patches of skin, which are dry, red and itchy, occur on the skin of the back, scalp, palms, knees, elbows and around the fingernails and toenails. But some people have the patches all over the body. The patches may also crack, flake and bleed. While there is no definite cure, the symptoms can be managed and treated.

Symptoms of Psoriasis

The symptoms of psoriasis may vary from patient to patient. However, if more than two of the following signs are seen, it is likely that psoriasis is the causative condition:

1. A sharp and localized pain in the joints accompanied by stiffness
2. Soreness in the throat
3. Tiny depressions in the nails or large brown patches under the nails
4. The diseased patches of skin can crack, peel and bleed
5. Swelling and tenderness of the limbs
6. Dental plaque
7. Muscle pain due to the swollen bands of connective tissue
8. A whitish and silvery mass of scales surrounded by red patches of stinging, itchy skin
9. The appearance of blisters or rashes on the dry scaly skin and also along the nails
10. Bumps on the folded skin like back of the knees, armpits etc.

Causes of Psoriasis

  1. HIVHuman Immuno-deficiency Virus adversely affects the immune system and increases susceptibility of all kinds of infections and diseases. HIV-positive individuals have been found to have an increased risk of psoriasis than HIV-negative people.
  2. Medication: Anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory and blood pressure medicines can cause psoriasis as a side effect. The disease is also an effect of withdrawal from topical steroid creams and other steroid-based medication.
  3. Genetics: More than 32% of the cases of psoriasis have been linked to genes. In case of identical twins, if one twin has the disease, the other has a 70% chance of getting it too. There are several genes associated with the disease- most of these genes are related to the immune system. T cells (lymphocytes which affect cell specific immunity) can also cause psoriasis.
  4. Other diseases: Diseases like strep throat, chronic infections, skin infections and stress may be responsible for the condition. Other factors like obesity, alcoholism, skin dryness and smoking can also lead to psoriasis.

PCOD - How Ayurveda Can Help You Treat It?

PCOD - How Ayurveda Can Help You Treat It?

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) can throw life in jeopardy. A disorder of the endocrine system, PCOS is characterized by the formation of a cyst or multiple cysts in the ovary of a woman of reproductive age. More than often, PCOS affects the ovulation process giving rise to many complications including infertility and menstrual problems. In women with PCOS, the level of the hormone androgen is found to be quite elevated. While conventional treatments and surgical options are available, people are gradually switching over to Ayurvedic treatment. With a holistic approach amalgamated with a healthy diet and beneficial modifications and lifestyle changes, Ayurveda has been instrumental in treating the condition of PCOS with elan. In this article, we will discuss the Ayurvedic approach to deal with PCOD and the associated symptoms.

To enjoy a sound and disease free health, a proper balance and equilibrium between the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) are essential. A disruption of the dosha balance can, in turn, trigger contamination and impairment of the any of the seven Dhatus or tissues (Rasa Dhatu, Rakta Dhatu, Mamsa Dhatu, Meda Dhatu, Asthi Dhatu, Majja Dhatu, Shukra Dhatu) leading to a built-up of internal toxins (Ama).

In PCOS, there is vitiation of the Kapha Dosha that goes on to block the Vata and Pitta Doshas. The vitiation affects the Rakta and Rasa Dhatu which triggers the Ama to build up in the Manovahi Strotas (mind channels). This acts as a catalyst resulting in a hormonal imbalance with the symptoms and complications characteristic of PCOS.

Ayurvedic Treatment for PCOS
Once the trigger for PCOS has been diagnosed, the next step involves cleansing (detoxifying) the body of the harmful Ama through

  1. The use of medicated oil baths and oil massages (Oleation) and Fomentation (the body is made to sweat excessively).
  2. A Therapy known as Panchakarma is often used to carry out the necessary detoxification.
  3. Oleation and Fomentation, extensively used in Panchakarma go a long way to soften as well as liquify the toxins which remain attached to the body tissues. The softened and liquefied toxins are then easily eliminated and flushed out using different Panchakarma steps (Vamana, Nasya, Basti, Virechana, and Raktamokshana).
  4. There is also a dietary modification. In most of the times, a woman with PCOS is recommended a light and vegetarian diet, avoiding saturated and trans fats (Bad fats such as Margarine, cookies, pastries).
  5. Processed and refined foods, desserts, candies, red meat, dairy products (high fats) aerated drinks, and beverages, white bread, are best left avoided.
  6. Include foods such as onion, cauliflower, grapefruit, peaches, apples, oats, (low glycemic index).
  7. Choose complex carbohydrates (lentils, beans, oatmeal, whole grain bread, green leafy vegetables) over simple ones.
  8. Drink more fluids (water, fresh fruit juice, soup).
  9. Exercise and meditation is a must. However, do not overstress yourself.
  10. Keep stress (physical, mental, emotional) at bay.
  11. Methi seeds and flax seeds can work wonders for PCOS. You can soak the methi seeds in water (overnight) and drink the water the next day.

Dysmenorrhea - How Ayurveda Can Help Treat It?

There are many women for whom menstruation can be a real nightmare. From menstrual cramps and pain (spasmodic pain, can be a shooting, throbbing or a dull pain) to nausea and vomiting, the struggle is at another level altogether. The complications and discomfort are all characteristics of a condition termed as Dysmenorrhea. Many women with dysmenorrhea have had significant improvement, all thanks to Ayurveda! In this article, our discussion will mainly center around dysmenorrhea and the Ayurvedic treatment to overcome this problem.

Dysmenorrhea and Ayurveda

Dysmenorrhea is referred to as Kashtartav in Ayurveda. Apana Vayu, a subclass of Vata or wind dosha and mainly located in the pelvic region (pelvic floor) plays a significant role in menstruation. It is this Apana Vayu that controls and regulates the menstruation or Aartav in women (ensures that there is a healthy and normal menstrual cycle). The Apana Vayu usually flows in a down and out direction. An aggravation of this Vayu affects its natural flow. As a result, the Apana Vayu flows in an inward direction into the uterus triggering uterine pain and spasmodic pain during discharge of the menstrual blood (Raja).

  1. Thus, restoring the Vata balance and ensuring an unobstructed and free flow of the Vata in the proper direction can go a long way in reducing the complications and discomfort associated with dysmenorrhea.
  2. In this regard, Panchakarma, especially Uttar Basti and Anuvasan Basti deserve a special mention.
  3. Uttar Basti is mainly carried out to clear blockages that may be affecting the uterus, ensuring its proper nourishment. The procedure is simple and involves administration of herbal medicines inside the uterus (Garbhashay).
  4. Anuvasan Basti is a little different from Uttar Basti. The main aim of Anuvasan Basti is to restore the healthy and normal menstrual blood flow sans any pain and discomfort by ensuring an unobstructed movement of the Vata Dosha in a downward direction (rather than being inward as is the case in dysmenorrhea).
  5. For this purpose, the patient is given various decoction enema and medicated oils that works wonders to reduce the discomfort.
  6. As for the diet, avoid stale and cold food. Instead, go for foods that are warm and contain generous amounts of ghee.
  7. Foods prepared using warm spices (coriander, cumin, cinnamon) are also recommended.
  8. Drink water and other healthy fluids at regular intervals. A hydrated body acts as a catalyst keeping the Rasa Dhatu healthy and nourished.
  9. Avoid caffeinated drinks as they can have deleterious consequences.
  10. Avoid stress and anxiety. Meditation and yoga can play a pivotal role to keep you relaxed (physically, mentally as well as emotionally), thereby reducing the discomfort.
  11. The use of castor oils (avoid during menstruation) can produce positive results in the case of dysmenorrhea by ensuring proper nourishment of the Apana Vayu.
  12. Ginger tea, fennel tea, or a Dashamula tea can be very soothing.
