Mesotherapy - All About It!

MD - Dermatology, MBBS
Dermatologist, Panchkula
Mesotherapy - All About It!

Mesotherapy literally translates to “treatment of the meso” - the layer of skin with fat and subcutaneous tissue. The mesoderm is the target layer here, into which natural substances, tested chemicals, vitamins, and other agents are injected to treat conditions like cellulite, fat accumulation, and ageing effects of the skin.

The procedure involves the injection of safe, tested and approved substances for benefit of the skin. Mesotherapy has been in use for a long time in Europe, though it is gained popularity over the last couple of decades now. Mesotherapy is used for -

  1. Weight reduction
  2. Cellulite removal
  3. Anti-ageing treatments for wrinkles and dark spots
  4. Acne scar removal
  5. Stretch marks
  6. Facial rejuvenation
  7. Blepharoplasty (eyelid contour)

Here is a list of benefits -

  • There is no invasion into the cellular layer, unlike in laser or liposuction.
  • There is no scarring with mesotherapy, unlike with liposuction.
  • It is done as an outpatient process, and the patient can walk out after the procedure.
  • No sedation is required with mesotherapy.

Comparison with other options:

  • In comparison to liposuction which does not treat cellulite but makes it more prominent, mesotherapy treats cellulite directly. The result of the therapy is smoother skin and reduced fat in selected areas. The removed fat tissue is flushed out from the body, and does not appear anywhere else, as is the case with liposuction.
  • When used for anti-ageing effects, vitamins, collagen, and elastin are used. The head, neck, and face areas are usually treated, and the skin begins to appear younger in about a week’s time.
  • For people seeking weight loss, Mesotherapy helps break down existing fat and also helps break down love handles, double chin, and other visible fat lumps. This helps in almost immediate weight loss. Added with skin contouring, there is no loose skin left behind either.

What to expect during the sessions?

  • After a detailed history, pre-treatment pictures are taken.
  • The doctor identifies what chemicals need to be injected, and allergy testing is done for these. Two areas are injected with small quantities and watched for a day to see if there is any reaction.
  • Once it is deemed safe, further injections are given the next day.
  • Topical anesthesia is usually not required.
  • Results will be evident after a couple of days and will continue to be more evident..
  • Repeat sessions may be required for some people, depending on the severity of the condition and the response of the person.
  • There could be minor effects like bruising and pain, which disappear within a couple of days.

Microdermabrasion - Skin Polishing

Microdermabrasion - Skin Polishing

For glowing, bright skin, it is important that it is maintained well. The skin has multiple layers, and over a period of time, due to constant exposure to pollution and dust, the top layers become worn out and lack lustre. Once these top layers are removed, the underlying layers which are fresher can help in giving the skin a much younger and brighter look.

Removal of the dead cells is one of the important aspects of skin care, and microdermabrasion does just that and gives a younger, glowing skin.

Microdermabrasion – What it Does?
There are tiny particles, which are abrasive in nature, which are used on the skin. These by their abrasive and cleansing nature, remove the top layers, making way for fresher skin from the subsequent layers. It is very similar to a facial, except that an instrument is used, which will generate mild heat, which helps in removing the top dead cells.

This procedure, which takes about 45 minutes, creates a gentle vacuum which removes dead cells. In addition,

  1. It improves circulation so that the cheeks turn rosy again
  2. It reduces wrinkles and fine lines that appear as part of ageing. In fact, microdermabrasion is one of the most widely used anti-ageing treatments currently.
  3. It improves dullness, by removing the top dead layers and provides skin with a fresh lease of life (and cells!)
  4. It reduces appearance of age spots which are due to increased pigmentation and makes skin even and less rough
  5. Reduces damage caused by the sun
  6. Scars (from any injury)
  7. Removes blackheads and whiteheads

What to Expect:

  1. It is usually done in the outpatient setting, and no anesthesia is required
  2. Any chemical treatment to the affected area should be stopped 2 days ahead
  3. Discuss with your doctor about your regular medications, which might require change
  4. Continue using the sunscreen
  5. Do not wear makeup on the day of the treatment
  6. There is heat generated during the process, so there could be redness, mild swelling, and tenderness
  7. After the procedure, avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 to 3 days
  8. Do not use any chemicals on the area for at least 3 days
  9. Do not use saunas or steam for about a week
  10. Face should be washed multiple times, either with plain water, or with a gentle face wash
  11. Repeat sessions, if required, will be done after 3 to 4 weeks depending on the condition and your response

Microdermabrasion is one of the most widely used skin polishing techniques and talk to your doctor to find out if it can help bring your skin back to life!

Fractional Laser Treatment - Know About It!

MD - Dermatology, MBBS

Fractional Laser Treatment - Know About It!

Fractional laser or Fraxel as it is commonly known in cosmetic surgery terms, is a non-invasive technique to treat various skin problems. A beam of laser is divided into thousands of treatment zones, which are focused on a particular spot on the skin, giving it the name fractional laser.

Conventionally, ablative laser works on the epidermis while non-ablative laser works on the collagen or the dermis layer. Fractional laser is unique in that it works on both these layers. Therefore, in problems involving both these layers, Fraxel works extremely well.

  1. Sun damage
  2. Extensive skin pigmentation
  3. Wrinkles
  4. Stretch marks
  5. Melasma

How does it work?

The skin has two layers – epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the protective layer and has the melanin-producing melanocytes, which gives the skin, its color. The dermis has collagen and elastic fibers, which gives it skin the elasticity. With age, the skin loses its elasticity and becomes pale, as the collagen degenerates. Less of new collagen is formed, and so aged appearance including sagging, fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, etc. appear.

What Fraxel does is produce 1000s of columns of laser which act on both the dermis and the epidermis and improve collagen formation and removing old cells. The surrounding skin remains intact, and only the area of focus is treated.

What to expect?

  1. Before the procedure, the doctor will validate if you are a candidate for the procedure.
  2. Photos will be taken of the area and in people with darker complexion, bleaching or chemical peel may be used
  3. With face cleaned with soap and water, an anesthetic cream is applied to the skin.
  4. The laser beam is then applied, usually about 30 minutes.
  5. The procedure could be painful if the laser beam is strong which makes the use of anesthetic essential
  6. A cooling device is applied at the end of the procedure, and the area is then washed off
  7. One may experience redness, swelling, and tenderness for about a week
  8. New skin will develop in about a week’s time
  9. Skin peeling can happen in some people, which can be easily removed off without pain
  10. Adequate use of moisturizer and sunscreen is advised
  11. Clothing should be protective, include sunglasses, wide hat, and scarf
  12. Most people require a repeat of 3 to 4 sessions to complete the treatment, with a gap of a month usually.
  13. Unlike with other skin treatments, the effect from Fraxel takes time. It may take up to 3 to 4 months for the complete effect to show, as it involves complete collagen formation.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.
