Hi, My daughter is 1 month old If breast milk is not possible can we give cow's milk to new born 1 month old baby? If not please suggest.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

Hi,
My daughter is 1 month old
If breast milk is not possible can we give cow's milk to new born 1 month old baby?
If...
We cant give cow milk to a 4 month old baby and can tart giving it only when the child is 12 month old. Cow' s baby is much heavier than a human baby. the protein present in it is quite complex which a human baby cannot digest In addition, cow's milk doesn't have the right amounts of iron, vitamin C, and other nutrients for infants. It may even cause iron-deficiency anemia in some babies, since cow's milk protein can irritate the lining of the digestive system, leading to blood in the stools. Finally, cow's milk doesn't provide the healthiest types of fat for growing babies. So my suggestion for you I to use pwdered milk LACTOGEN 1 avaliable in the market for your baby as thi powder contains protein that a 4 month old child can diget easily thu helping in his overall development.

Cold and Cough in Children - Precautions that Parents Must Take

Senior Residency, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS

Cold and Cough in Children - Precautions that Parents Must Take

Cold and cough is caused by a viral infection, which can last for about two to four weeks. The symptoms include stuffy or a runny nose, coughing and sore throat. Many times, the infection may raise body temperature and the child may suffer from fever. Our body’s immune system naturally fights with such infections. Depending on the type of cough and the symptoms, the virus can stay active in the body for about 4 to 6 weeks. It is quite painful to see the child suffering from cold and cough. The symptoms of this infection are worse during the first two days.

The child will experience pain and irritation in the throat with difficulty in swallowing, frequent coughing with mucous, breathing difficulty and high fever. Most parents rush to over the counter drugs for cold and cough to ease of their child’s agony. However, most drugs/ cough syrups available over the counter only provide temporary relief. Medical evidence suggests that antibiotics do not kill viruses, thus, it is not advisable to treat cold and cough with antibiotics unless accompanied by another infection. So, what do parents do? Well, there is a lot that can be done.

Let’s first understand the type of a cough your child might be suffering from:

  1. Dry cough: Generally occurs due to infection in upper respiratory tract, cold or influenza. Children with asthma and allergies are also prone to this type of cough as dry cough is triggered by smoke or dust.
  2. Croup Cough: A harsh barking and dry cough with swelling beneath vocal cords.
  3. Wet Cough: Most commonly caused by cold. This is an infection of the lower respiratory tract characterised by mucous secretions.
  4. Whooping cough: Characterised by fast coughing, breathing difficulties and a whooping sound while breathing.

Apart from this, If coughing starts suddenly along with choking, the child may have inhaled a foreign body. Immediate help may be required. For babies less than 12 months of age, cold cough followed by breathing difficulties may indicate bronchiolitis and require a paediatric attention. A normal cold and cough generally subside with two to four weeks. However, it is important to understand when to consult a doctor.

  • Chest pain or breathing problems
  • Cough lasting for more than 6 weeks.
  • A yellow, green or brown mucous indicating another infection.
  • Swollen glands, persistent high fever, rashes.
  • Body getting pale and symptoms getting worse.
  • Temperature higher than 38 degrees in the case of infants.

Precautions and diet that should be taken care of

  • Increase Intake of fluids especially hot liquids
  • Never stop breastfeeding the baby
  • Vapour rub applied on chest and back is an effective remedy
  • Inhaling steam provides relief to a sore throat and nose
  • Intake of crushed tulsi leaves with honey or hot turmeric milk is soothing and very helpful

There is little we can do to prevent viral infections. However, proper care and caution can ensure a smooth recovery. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.

How Should I Bath My Baby

Panchkula & Delhi
Mother and Child Care, Panchkula
How Should I Bath My Baby

Bathing  the newborn baby is a pleasurable experience both for the mother and the baby. It can also be defined as a process through which the mother and child bond. A mother understands the requirements of the child and the baby adapts itself to the cleanliness regime of the mother.

When should I start bathing my new born baby?

According to guidelines of WHO, initial bath for a term newborn weighing more than 2.5kg should be given 6 hours after birth. In the term low birth weight babies weighing less than 2.5kgs, only sponge bath is to be given, till the weight crosses 2.5kg.

Dip baths can be given once the umbilical cord falls off i.e. by 7 -10 days. Till then sponge baths are to be given.

How should I bathe my baby?

The room should be warm and free from draught of air as a wet baby can easily catch the chill. Check the temperature of the bath water before placing the baby in the bath tub. The depth of the water should be 5 cms upto the hip of the baby. Eyes can be cleaned by using one sterile water-soaked cotton swab for each eye. The Head should be washed last and dried first to prevent exposure due to large surface area. Pay special attention to skin folds of the neck, behind the ears, underarms, and diaper area. Also wash between the fingers and the toes.

What cleanser/ soap should I use for my baby?

Do not use soap for the first 1 month of life. After that, use any mild unmedicated soap or liquid cleanser with acidic/ neutral pH, that maintains the pH of the baby's skin. Avoid scented soaps and bubble baths.

How frequently should I bathe my baby?

In summer months, daily baths can be given. In winters, dip bath may be given twice/thrice a week and rest of the days, it is preferable to sponge the baby.

Hair wash can be given twice  a week.

A word of caution:

Never leave your baby unattended  to in the bath tub.Bath tub should be disinfected after use. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult the doctor and ask a free question.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
It is expected that he must have been vaccinated including measles at proper schedule time therefore there is very remote chance to contract measles. Anyway, once any viral infection effects brain it is unpredictable to assess time of outcome. It is obvious that he is under care of expert in the field. I suggest to trust and discuss with treating doctors.

My baby has chest congestion. The doc advised to give him. Steam thru vaporizer. I have bought sodium chloride injection along with Levolin, but do not know how to use it. Do I need to add water to vaporizer in order to make sufficient steam? Confused.

Pediatrician, Chennai
My baby has chest congestion. The doc advised to give him. Steam thru vaporizer. I have bought sodium chloride inject...
As advised by doctor, you can give steam through vapourizer carefully. But plain steam. And do not let your baby go very close to the vapouriser. Sodium chloride with levolin is for nebulization, not vapourizer. It is not advisable to give nebulization for kids without supervision of a doctor. If nebulization has been advised, take your child to nearby hospital or clinic and give it. Hope this helped you!

Thumb-sucking Habit - 7 Things to Keep in Mind!

Thumb-sucking Habit - 7 Things to Keep in Mind!

The habit of thumb sucking is very common in many toddlers and babies, but often disturbs the parents to a great extent. Before dealing with this habit, it is very imperative for parents to understand the cause of this behavior. The tendency of thumb sucking is quite normal for the babies as it makes them feel comforting.

Problems that occur with thumb sucking
There are certain problems that occur if the baby develops the habit of prolonged thumb sucking. The problem that occurs mainly on sucking the thumb for longer time is with the teeth of the toddlers which may result in speech problems. Some babies get over this habit of thumb sucking on their own without any adverse after affects. However, sometimes prolonged thumb sucking may result in irritation on the skin or lead to peeling off of the skin, causing discomfort and pain to the child. There are chances that even the nails on the fingers grow in a crooked manner because of infection caused by thumb sucking.

How to get your child to leave thumb sucking habit?

  1. Parents must in any case not force their toddlers to stop this habit or get upset with them, as it can cause the toddler to develop this habit all the more.
  2. A child mainly sucks his thumb for comfort, and the habit can be stopped by diverting their mind and offering the child a soft toy or giving them a special blanket.
  3. It is better to give the toddler something to hold which makes him feel secure and comfortable.
  4. It is very important to assess whether it is a problem before stopping the habit of thumb sucking. But if the habit continues, it may affect the alignment of the teeth.
  5. It is always better to make use of ways like positive reinforcement and encouraging behavior change in your child. Parents must set up a reward system and take a note of the days the child does not suck his thumb. It is important that parents praise their child verbally and give them some reward at the end of the month.
  6. The best and simple way to quit the habit of thumb sucking is to cover the thumb with a thumb guard or mittens.
  7. The best way to help your child quit the habit would be to distract him or her and involve them in activities that would require the use of both the hands. Parents can keep their child busy by giving them puzzles or blocks to play. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

Your concern is jenune, your baby might have hypersensitive airway, just go through a detailed physical examination, respiratory function test. It might be due to environmental exposure of so many allergent, toxic fumes. Yiu just checked your child with pediatric pulmonologist and stick to the treatment. Bcz childhood Asthama is a chronic disease, only prevented no cure. It resolves spontaneously if you prevent its recurrent attack with lifestyle chane, environmental& behavioural modification with some medication.

Coughing is one of the most common reasons why people visit their doctors. When symptoms last for more than a few weeks, the cough would be diagnosed as being chronic. The most common causes of chronic cough include post nasal drip, asthma and acid reflux. Post nasal drip, caused by allergic rhinitis, and asthma certainly could be caused by allergies, which could be worse seasonally.
