Hello. Having mood swings and inability to control emotions can be a feature of underlying mood disorder. If such swings are worrying you and affecting your life adversely, you must consult a psychiatrist for complete evaluation and treatment. Till then, you can try deep breathing exercises or meditation. Regular exercise also boosts the mood naturally. Avoid excess of caffeine. Have plenty of water and eat a balanced diet. Take care!

Hello lybrate-user. Your tsh levels are raised, that means you have hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include lethargy, weight gain, feeling cold, difficulty in concentration, etc. You may also have low mood or depression like symptoms. So both are connected to some extent. Kindly see a physician and a psychiatrist who will give you required treatment.

Hi. I can understand your distress. Having severe anxiety is very incapacitating. Having this much anxiety usually results from imbalance of chemicals (neurotransmitters) in brain. As a result, our autonomic system is activated to more than usual level, which produces these symptoms. And these are not fully under our control and require some medication, at least initially, to control them. So, you should consult a psychiatrist who will help you understand your problem after thorough check up (as we need to rule out other physical causes of anxiety as well). We see a marked improvement in people having such symptoms and overall functioning with adequate treatment. So do not delay treatment!

Hello sir. I am very sorry for your loss. We all go through the process of mourning and have thoughts of those who have left us. We get distressed during the initial few months but gradually, we learn to accept our loss and cherish the fond memories. If we fight to block the thoughts, then this would trouble us more. Let the thoughts come, and. Let them go. Do not try to modify your experience. This will help in reducing your distress. You will gradually learn this, but keep trying. You can take deep and slow breaths, try yoga or other form of meditation to keep you relaxed. Keep doing your routine work. Do exercise. Eat healthy, sleep well. Avoid much of tea/coffee. Keep in touch with your family and friends. Just try to be" normal" with time, you will definitely get better. Please take care.

Hello. Sir/mem, I am engineering student. I think my memory is not good. If I read theory. After some time or in the exam hall I forget. Give me some tips to how can I remembering what I study. Thank you.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Panchkula
Hi lybrate-user. Forgetting is a natural phenomenon of brain. In order to remember things for longer, you should try to read multiple times, write to check how much you remember after sometime, take frequent breaks (say after half hour reading, 5 minute break), regularly have water, take deep breaths to send more oxygen to your brain, don't starve yourself as our brain needs regular supply of glucose to function, have a good night's sleep before you go for your exam as during sleep, short term memory is converted to long term memory. Also, a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables is important to feed your brain with required minerals, vitamins and other nutrients. Take care!

I had epilepsy problem some twenty five year ago. I gradually reduced the dosage and I was alright. Bud suddenly had an attack yesterday. What should I do.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Panchkula
Hello mam. You must contact your doctor without a delay as your condition needs re-evaluation and maybe, your medicines need to be continued. If you want to reduce or stop your medication, it must be done under guidance of your doctor only, as unsupervised change of medication is always harmful. Please take care.

Hello sir. Please ensure his safety first. Do not leave him alone at any time, keep all potential harmful things, like medicines, insecticides, knives etc away from him, talk to him and try to comfort him so that he does not feel lonely. Having suicidal thoughts is alarming and he needs to see a psychiatrist to help him get out of his depression. Just asking him to come out of it won't help him as it is not on his control. He needs combination of medication and professional counseling. Take care.

Hello lybrate-user. I must appreciate your concern about smoking and willingness to quit it. Regarding your throat and chest pain, you must get it checked by going to a local doctor, as it may be an infection or any other problem. Smoking certainly is very harmful in both short and long term and can lead to these type of symptoms. You must take professional help in order to quit it as you will have difficulty in initial few days which can be overcome with some medicines. Counseling also improves chances to quit smoking. Above all, you need to be very determined to quit it totally, otherwise you will keep relapsing back to smoking. Yes certainly, you can kick the butt for good! take care!

Hello lybrate-user. Not having good sleep does have its downside, like feeling tired, lack of concentration, irritability, fatigue, etc. What concerns me is your disturbed sleep for weeks now. Its reason needs to be checked in detail, for which a psychiatrist will be appropriate. You must get it done sooner, as any delay will make your health deteriorate further. Once the reason is ascertained, then the remedial action can be taken accordingly, restoring normal sleep and subsequent improvement in your symptoms.
