My teeth is getting broken into little pieces while eating some food is that o don't have calcium or is that any other problem.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
Brittleness of teeth may be due to various factors: Genetic factors: Weak teeth are sometimes passed on down the generations of a family. People belonging to these families tend to suffer brittle teeth. Dietary habits: Eating too many sugary and acidic foods weakens teeth, and causes them to become brittle. Frequent snacking is also not advisable because the pH level of saliva does not come to its normal levels because of continuous intake of food. Usually, it takes around three to four hours for the effects of enzymes present in the food to reduce and restore optimum pH of saliva. Moreover, high acidic level in the mouth damages the enamel covering the teeth, thereby causing brittleness. Aerated drinks, much intake of citrus fruit juices like lemon, tobacco usage and too much alcohol are some of the other reasons that cause brittleness. Lack of balanced diets leads to vitamin and calcium deficiency in the body. As a result, teeth lose their strength and become brittle. Also, drinking water which contains high levels of fluoride is also one of the major reasons for brittleness. Involuntary habits: Some people involuntarily grind or clench their teeth when they sleep or become emotional. When grinding happens, the outer layer or enamel covering teeth is damaged. This damage paves way to brittleness. Use of excess force while brushing teeth is another common factor for this condition. Medical conditions: Certain diseases, not necessarily of dental origin, lead to brittle teeth. Some of the common diseases that result in this condition are: Periodontal disease: This is a disease of the gum, jaw bones and teeth. If ignored, this disease affects the structure of dentures and strength of the gums. When the disease reaches advanced stages, teeth become brittle Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is not a disease of dental origin but a condition that affects the overall structure of bones in the body. People with low bone density and inadequate nutrients suffer brittle teeth through weakening of the jaw bones and teeth Nerve changes: In some cases, nerve tissues in the teeth reduce. As a result, nervous activity in the teeth reduces. This leads to brittleness of teeth Kidney diseases: Kidney diseases can lead to bone loss or reduced bone density. Osteoporosis is one of the side effects of some kinds of renal diseases. When kidneys malfunction, bones all over the body become weak. This affects the jaw bone as well. Teeth become loose and brittle. Also, when kidneys do not function optimally, absorption of calcium from food decreases. Teeth do not receive adequate amount of calcium and hence, become brittle. Drugs: Certain kinds of drugs cause brittleness in bones because of the various side effects they cause. Some drugs contain ingredients that reduce calcium absorption in the body. Some drugs also contain high level of fluoride and can lead to brittleness. However, using such drugs for short durations does not cause this problem. The condition is common in people who use these drugs chronically. Aging: Aging can also cause brittleness. Usually, the side effects of different activities, medicines and stress that the teeth undergo cumulate over age and cause brittleness as age advances. Elderly people who follow good dietary habits and avoid unhealthy habits do not suffer from brittleness.

Toothpicks can be an alternative to use for flossing if dental floss is not available. Remember not to be too harsh while using it.

I am 25 years old. My teeth are yellow but I didn't eat the pan or gutkha up to now. How can I make my teeth white?

I advice you go for scaling (professional tooth cleaning) to remove the extrinsic stains and then polishing and then bleaching (tooth whitening) so as to remove the intrinsic stains and improves the tooth shade.

HI, From my teeth blood comes while brushing or mouth wash what should I do. Regards.

B.D.S
Dentist, Siliguri
Hi visit your nearby dentist and get a scaling done. Use a mouthwash after that for 7-10 days. You can use parodontax toothpaste for 15 days to put a rest to the gum bleeding. Also to prevent bleeding from gums in future, brush twice daily with an ultra soft bristles toothbrush, rinse your mouth after every meal and use a dental floss for cleaning the inter dental spaces.

I frequetly suffer from mouth ulser. What should I need to do give your opinion. Thnx.

Dentist, Bangalore
Hi. Can understand your concern. As per your complain there is no specific reason found which causes mouth ulcers and the treatment for mouth ulcers is based on relieving the symptoms. If you have pain you can use numbing gels like orabase gel, mucopain gel. Avoid spicy and hot food as it can be irritating. Avoid sour food as it can lead to aggravating the ulcers and relapses. Drink enough water to keep yourself hydrated. Do saline gargles. Take a multivitamin like zincovit for 15 days. Hope your query is solved.

To lessen the degree of pain or soreness in the mouth during the orthodontic treatment, you can gargle with 8 ounces of lukewarm water with one teaspoonful of salt dissolved in it. Swish it around your mouth and then spit it out. It will dull the pain and provide relief.

I am 18 years old. I want to ask how do I whiten my tooth either by naturally or medical treatments. Please help me.

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
Here is home remedy for brighter teeth--- mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice (or water) to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and any extra saliva off of them with a paper towel. Put a good amount of paste onto your toothbrush and apply. Leave the paste on for 1 minute, then rinse, so as to avoid the acid effecting enamel. If you are using just water you can leave it on for up to 3 minutes. For faster result you can go for teeth bleaching from dentist.

You are giving right treatment by providing him with vitamin b and c. But we have to check for reason of ulcers. Ulcers can be removed only by treating the reason. Are the ulcers painful? please visit nearby dentist for oral examination to diagnose the problem.

My friend has lost all the taste in her mouth. She is able to eat everything but as she feels no taste, she doesn't feel like eating. What can be the cause of this? Please provide some solution.

Our toung consists of several taste buds, because of these taste buds we can feel the various tastes like sweet, sour, spicy etc. Damage to these taste buds results in loss of taste sensation. Excessive food deposition on tongue also results in loss of taste sensation. Some times having too cold or hot liquids frequently also results in loss of taste sensation. Wat you should do: 1- maintain good oral hygine by brushing twice a day. 2- avoid too cold and hot liquids and food. 3- keep your tongue clean by tongue cleaner. Sometimes disease of tongue went unnoticed also causes this situation. So primarily follow above instructions if that doesn't solve the problem then only go to an e. N. T. Surgeon for further diagnosis and investigations.
