I dnt knw m pregnant but my date of period is 5 feb what should I do may I have the urine test or wait.
U need to wait till 7 days after the missed period that is on 12th march. If negative then keep repeating it every week till you get menses. You have to read it within 5 min of putting the urine and even faint second line is positive.

My mother is 48 yrs old. She has irregular periods with heavy bleeding. She consult with the doctor, and doc is saying from last 1year that now its time to stop the menstruation period, but nothing happened. My mother has to suffer alot of pain with heavy blood flow every month. Please suggest what to do. Thanks in advance!

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Ludhiana
Hi excessive bleeding in periods at this age is very common & there are many causes including dysfunctional uterine bleeding, fibroid uterus, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, polyps, malignancy, some drugs etc. Most important is to diagnose the exact cause & treat accordingly. To say simply that it is because of menopause (or to say that its time to stop the periods, as commonly said), without relevant investigations to rule out above mentioned causes, its not wise to call it normal variation. So your mother needs _ 1- complete gynaecological examination 2- ultrasound abdomen 3- blood tests, which must include hb, cbc, blood sugar, thyroid function test & complete urine examination 4- lastly, a premenstrual endometrial biopsy. Get done all tests & discuss with me after you get all reports. Till then, ensure that she has good healthy diet, proper rest & stress free life.

15 Questions You've Always Wanted to Ask Your Gynaecologist

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Noida
15 Questions You've Always Wanted to Ask Your Gynaecologist

There are many questions a woman may have in mind for her gynecologist, but never asked them. Here are 15 such questions along with their solutions.

  1. Does my vagina smell unpleasant?: You should shower it with water and gently wipe it with a wash cloth before any test. Applying perfume makes the smell even worse.
  2. What to do in case the feet stink?: You should wear fresh and clean socks before going for the test and getting in the stirrup, which is a metal device for convenience of gynaecological tests.
  3. In case of a period, should I cancel my test appointment?: A gynaecologist is not afraid nor disgusted by blood as blood is a part of the specialist's profession. If you have heavy bleeding, you can call up the nurse for suggestions.
  4. What if the doctor or nurse judges my body?: Your gynaecologist does not care about your body and is more concerned about your problems and how to solve them.
  5. What if my legs are unshaved?: Your gynaecologist really does not care about your legs or underarms or any part of your body. Your problem is the only concern for the doctor.
  6. What if my shaved hair looks ugly?: As stated before, the gynaecologist is only concerned about your problem and nothing else. Use a sharp razor to prevent bumps or ingrown hair.
  7. What is the speculum?: It is a device used by your gynaecologist for opening your vagina in order to observe the cervix or look for infections on the vaginal wall.
  8. Why do I urinate in my pants if I sneeze, laugh or cough?: This is a common phenomenon for women who have given birth and is easy to treat.
  9. Is my vaginal discharge normal?: Having a small amount of white vaginal discharge is quite normal.
  10. What does the gynaecologist check inside my vagina using hands?: The bimanual exam is done using the hands to detect problems in the uterus.
  11. What if I do not like birth control means?: There are over 50 methods of birth control and many pills you can choose from.
  12. Can I ask about my sexual problems?: Absolutely yes, as it is quite an important issue.
  13. Can my partner or family accompany me to the test?: Yes, they can, but during the time of the test, they should leave the room.
  14. Can I discuss my relationship problems?: Your gynaecologist should know about any issue you are having.
  15. If I am having forced sex, should I tell? :Such matters should be conveyed immediately.

You can ask your gynecologist any question, which bothers you, without fear.

Calcium Tablets - Can They Be Bad For You?

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, Post Graduate Program in Diabetology
General Physician, Delhi
Calcium Tablets - Can They Be Bad For You?

For many people, popping a calcium tablet is something which has benefits, but at the same time does no harm. After all, who does not want to have strong bones and healthy teeth? The unfortunate part is that things are not so simple and a lot of research has debunked this.

Take, for example, the findings that when an old woman has calcium, the fracture rates are not all that different as compared to one who has not had calcium supplements. In addition to this, it was also found as part of a study that there is no positive impact on the mineral density of the hip.

As a matter of fact, calcium tablets and supplements can pose a significant risk, as well. While it is true that calcium does help in the effort of getting heart disease, an amount which is greater than the dietary limit does not. Actually, the excess calcium may increase the risk. This is true when it comes to calcium from supplements and not calcium which is absorbed by the way of food. So, what sort of additional risk is there? A study found that people who receive calcium from a tablet or another similar source have about a 140% greater chance of a heart attack!

How much is too much?

A thousand milligrammes of calcium in excess of the requirement on a daily basis is said to increase the risk of death from CVD or cardiovascular disease by about a fifth. Not a trivial amount, by any measure.

But why does this happen?

The key to answering this question comes from how the calcium is absorbed by the body. When calcium from food is eaten, the rate of it being released is a lot slower as compared to calcium from tablets. Also, when there is excess calcium, it is not absorbed and kept in reserve by the body but is excreted in the form of urine. So, this calcium going through the kidneys can cause some trouble there, as well!

Yes or No?

So, what is to be done in order to make sure one is having a sufficient amount of calcium? Well, there are a lot of sources and consuming things such as dairy products and fish, along with dark leafy vegetables are some great ways to get natural calcium. Only if a person has very low calcium levels should calcium tablets be consumed? It is well worth remembering that too much of a good thing is a bad thing! If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Physician.

Infertility: Causes And Symptoms!

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
IVF Specialist, Dibrugarh
Infertility: Causes And Symptoms!

Infertility is a condition where a couple, trying to conceive in a natural way is not able to do so even after one year of trying. It is also a matter of worry for patients who are over the age of 35 years and those who are not able to conceive naturally even after 12 months of trying constantly.

Causes: There are many causes of infertility. It may be down to a condition present in one or both partners. Ovulation and fertilisation are the main elements of the conception process and any condition in the female or male can upset either function, which can make it difficult to conceive.

While abnormal sperm production and transport may be a common condition that leads to infertility in males, other factors like side effects of cancer treatments and too much exposure to toxins and chemicals can also play an important role in this regard. For females, the causes of infertility may range from ovulation disorders, uterine and fibroid tumours, uterine and cervical anomalies, damage to or blockage of the fallopian tubes, endometriosis, primary ovarian insufficiency and pelvic adhesions.

Infertility Symptoms in Women

In women, changes in the menstrual cycle and ovulation may be a symptom of a disease related to infertility. Symptoms include:

  • Abnormal periods. Bleeding is heavier or lighter than usual.
  • Irregular periods. The number of days in between each period varies each month.
  • No periods. You have never had a period, or periods suddenly stop.
  • Painful periods. Back pain, pelvic pain, and cramping may happen.

Treatment: Female patients can turn to medication that will stimulate ovulation, intrauterine insemination, and surgical processes to correct a uterine septum and remove endometrial polyps, or even a hysteroscopy surgery. Male patients can go through a treatment for any existing infections, hormonal injections and medication, surgical options like vasectomy reversal and art or assistive reproductive technology.

If these methods fail, the patient or the couple can always turn to methods like in vitro fertilisation. For other mild reasons, lifestyle changes along with a stress free environment can help in increasing the chances of conception. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

Preterm Labor: What You Should Know

Premature labor is also known as preterm labor. This is the term given when the body gets ready for an early delivery in the pregnancy. Labor is considered to be premature if it starts almost three weeks prior to the due date. Premature labor usually leads to early birth, but now this can be delayed with medical help. It is better that the baby grows inside you because there are fewer chances of problems after birth.

Risk of Preterm Labor:
Some of the things, which can increase the risk of a preterm labor are:

  • Being underweight or overweight before pregnancy
  • Poor prenatal care
  • Use of alcohol and drugs during pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Health conditions, such as preeclampsia, infections, diabetes, high blood pressure and clotting disorders
  • Pregnant with a bay with birth defects
  • Getting pregnant through vitro fertilization
  • Pregnant with multiples like twins and triplets
  • Becoming pregnant soon after having a baby

Symptoms of preterm labor:
Warning signs should be heeded to stop the stop premature labor, as acting quickly can help. Consult your doctor or midwife immediately in case you have the following:

  1. Backache, especially in the lower back. Back ache can be a constant feature or might keep coming in intervals, but does not change with a change in position.
  2. Contractions that take place in each 10 minutes.
  3. A leaking feeling in the vagina or fluid leakage from the vagina.
  4. Cramps in the lower abdomen very similar to menstrual cramps. These usually give a feeling of gas pains and come with a diarrhea.
  5. Symptoms of flu like vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. Must to see a doctor if the liquids cannot be tolerated for more than 8 hours.
  6. The pressure in the vagina or pelvis increases.
  7. Vaginal discharge increases.
  8. There might be light bleeding from the vagina.

Ways to check for contractions:
To spot and early labor one must be sure to check for the contractions. Contractions can be checked by the following:

  1. When the fingertips are placed on the abdomen and the uterus feels too soft or tight then these are contractions.
  2. Contractions if felt, should be timed and the starting time of these should be noted.
  3. Contractions should be stopped by changing the position and drinking some water or by walking around.
  4. Doctor or midwife should be contacted if the contractions occur every 10 minutes and the symptoms worsen.
  5. Sometime women might experience false labor also known as Braxton Hicks contractions. These are not so strong, are erratic and stop on moving around.
