CLEANING YOUR EYE:- For the first week following surgery you should protect the eye from injury. Do not rub or put pressure on the eye. Take small pieces of cotton wool and place them in a bowl containing water. Boil for 15 minutes and keep the bowl covered. Wash your hands with soap. Take a small piece of the sterilized cotton wool from the bowl. Squeeze out the excess water. Clean the discharge around the upper and lower lids without applying pressure on the eye. This is generally needed in the morning as long as the ointment is being used at bed time. Fresh cotton is to be boiled twice a day if needed. PUTTING EYE DROPS:- Never use a pin/needle to open the eye drop bottle. Screw on the cap tight to open it. Retract the lower lid and instill one drop of the prescribed eye drop into the eye. Eye drops should be used as per the prescription. Only 1 drop at a time is enough. Keep both eyes closed for atleast 10 minutes after each eye drop. PROTECTING YOUR EYES:- Put on dark glasses throughout the day for one week. Wipe tears below the margin of the dark glasses. Do not touch the eye. Do not place cotton wool between the glasses and the eye. Do not sleep on the operated side for 2 days. For the first 5 days from the time of operation, take a bath below the neck. Face and hair can be washed after 5 days. But avoid getting water inside the eye. ACTIVITIES:- Avoid strenuous activities. Do not lift any objects heavier than 10 kg for about 5 days after the surgery You may start reading and watching TV after 2 days. Take rest frequently with both eyes closed. Many people return to light work immediately after surgery, but please discuss your needs with your doctor during your post operative visit (next day). Ask your doctor about any specific activities you may have in mind as in leaving town, driving, yoga, walks, gym etc. FOLLOW UP VISITS: Please come for a post operative check up as advised upon discharge. Generally the next day, one week and one month post-op. As a routine all operated eyes should be checked once every six months even if you have no problem. If you have any further questions regarding your surgery or post operative treatment kindly speak to the Nurse who will coordinate with your doctor to answer your queries. Collagen Crosslinking treatment in one of the latest advancements in ophthalmology. Internationally launched at the ESCRS conference in London in September 2006. This treatment provides a ray of hope for lacs of Indian keratoconus patients. C3R is a non-surgical procedure. Only known procedure that is proven to halt the progression of the dreaded Keratoconus. This treatment now offers an end to a lifetime of waiting and uncertainty for Keratoconus patients. This is a simple one-time treatment that offers a permanent solution to Keratoconus. It does not require heavy precautions or regular follow-up visits, does not need an eye donor as required in ‘Corneal Transplant’, does not require any stitches or incisions in the eye, takes around one hour and the recovery is quick. This procedure is a boon for patients with keratoconus. Keratoconus is amongst the most dreaded of eye diseases, as in most of the cases, the disease progresses relentlessly during the young age, does not have any acute symptoms initially and thus is often not detected in the early stage.

For some days I have a pain in the eyes and it became reddish I am having a bad problem of the red eyes. Please make ...
Redness of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic. (4) raised intraocular pressure: this is a condition known as glaucoma. It is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral (occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5) inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This is known as" uveitis" it is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. (6) increased blood pressure. This has known to cause redness which is also known as sub-conjunctival hemorrhage. In this regard, a complete ophthalmic evaluation and a systemic evaluation is warranted. From the symptoms described by you, it seems more likely to be a case of allergy. Maintaining the precautions and hygiene that I mentioned should probably work well for you. You could also use a lubricant eye drop along with an anti-histamine eye drop. (3-4 times daily) hope my suggestions helped you. Take care.

Ways To Prevent Common Eye Injuries!

Ways To Prevent Common Eye Injuries!

While it's assumed that numerous eye injuries are inflicted at work, just about the same number of them may happen while at home. Luckily, most eye wounds are preventable. Find ways to prevent eye injuries, as the eyes are very sensitive and delicate.

Here is a list of some of the most common eye injuries and tips on how to prevent them:

  1. A lot of eye injuries happen from dust particles entering the eyes, causing itching and burning sensation. Protective glasses should be worn when doing any kind of activity in a dusty area with flying particles.
  2. Pencils, scissors, forks, knives and all similar sharp objects can cause a serious eye injury. Day to day household items like bungee cords, wire coat hangers, rubber bands and fishhooks are capable of causing eye injuries. You must always remain aware and super conscious while using such objects.
  3. While performing activities such as dusting, sweeping or lawn mowing, make sure to protect your eyes well as dust is involved.
  4. Children are very curious by nature. Thus, all hazardous stuff like fertilizers, acids should be kept away from their reach. These contain harmful chemicals, which may inflict fatal damage to the eyes.
  5. Cooking powder and spices like chili powder can cause injury to the eye. Always wash your hands after using these items, so that you don't harm the eyes if you by chance rub them with your hands.
  6. Precautions should be taken while dealing with heat or boiling water or oil. They may spill and cause damage to the eyes.
  7. Secure floor coverings and railings. On the off chance that a kid or elderly man lives in your home, use a safety gate at the top and base of stairs, and consider covering sharp furniture edges and corners with a padding material.
  8. While travelling in a car, abrupt jerking or breaks may cause the head to bump and cause injury to the eye. Always put on your seat belt and do not allow children to sit in the front of a car.
  9. Many modern toys, which are very attractive have got sharp edges because of their fancy design. Abstain children from playing with these kinds of toys.
  10. Laser pointers, a common fun gadget for children is very harmful and causes permanent damage to the retina. Stay away from laser pointers.
  11. Wear eye gear to protect your eyes during sports activities. Also wear goggles during swimming as chlorine in swimming pool water damages the eyes.

Eye injuries may happen out of nowhere. You must always remain alert to avoid eye injuries. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an ophthalmologist.

When I watching TV and mobile phones constantly my left eyes have tears from it. What is the remedy for this?

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
When I watching TV and mobile phones constantly my left eyes have tears from it. What is the remedy for this?
Hi. I have a few suggestions for you regarding the usage of computers and mobile phones. Follow the rule of" 20" this means that every 20 minutes, take a gap of 20 seconds, blink your eyes actively 20 times and focus at an object which is minimum 20 feet away. This will help in relieving your eyes from the continuous strain that is caused due to staring. Staring at the computer continuously causes us to subconsciously blink less than normal. This causes the tear film on the surface of the eye to dry up. The result of this is pain, discomfort, etc. Another suggestions regarding the usage of computers is to maintain a proper posture. The computer must be positioned at the same height as your eye level. The neck should not be inadvertently flexed or extended. Roughly, an angle of 90 degrees should be maintained between your upper body and thighs. Likewise, a similar angle (90 degrees) should be maintained between your lower legs and thighs. Also the angle between your hands and arms should be roughly 90 degrees. This is the healthy ergonomic way of sitting while using a computer. Maintenance of proper posture would help in further relieving the symptoms of eye discomfort and pain. All these suggestions may take a while to sink in and imbibe in your routine. Once followed, they are sure to work wonders for you. Hope my suggestions help you. Take care. Cheers.
