I usually do not get any complaints of my snoring, but since last week or so, ever since I migrated to a new place, apparently I am snoring. Are there any specific causes for this and how can it be cured?

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, snoring occurs when a person is not able to move the air through the nose and throat while sleeping. As aresult, the air vibrates the surrounding tissues and causes snoring sound. Causes of snoring are obesity, nasal problems such as blocked nose due to nasal septal deviation, polyp or sinusitis, smoking, consumption of tobacco, intake of alcohol, sleeping pills, relaxed throat muscles in elderly and tonsillitis in children. Please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used.

Hi lybrate-user. Swelling near or around parotid region can be because of various reasons. It can be acute parotitis as history is of few days only. So I would suggest that you consult an ent surgeon. He will give you some antibiotics for a week or so. It might take a few days to resolve. Thanks.

Hi , homeopathy works really good for seasonal allergies. The treatment takes some time but you will have full and permanent relief from your symptoms. Besides homeopathic medicines have no side effects. However a detail of your condition would be required so that I can come to the most appropriate medicine for you.

Constant Ringing in Ears - Causes + Treatment

MBBS, MS - ENT

Constant Ringing in Ears - Causes + Treatment

Tinnitus is a disorder which is characterized by a constant perception of a ringing noise in the ears. This is not the condition in itself, rather it signals some other underlying condition such as an ear injury or age related hearing loss. It is not a serious condition, although the symptoms can worsen with age. If you are affected by this disorder, you might experience or ‘hear’ a constant ringing sensation in the ears, even if there are no external sources of noise. These sounds could range from being a buzzing, ringing, to a hissing sound. This condition has mighty chances of interfering with your daily routine.

It is classified into two types:

  1. Objective tinnitus: This disorder is caused by muscle contractions or a blood vessel problem.
  2. Subjective tinnitus: The more commonly occurring type, it is caused by damage to the auditory nerves or regions of the brain that interpret sound.

The causes of this disorder are:

  1. Exposure to loud noise: If you are exposed to loud noises such as the ones emanating from firearms or heavy machinery over a prolonged period, it can lead to tinnitus.
  2. Aging: Aging can cause progressive loss of hearing, thus triggering tinnitus.
  3. Blockage of the ear: There is earwax present in the ears, the function of which is to trap dirt and bacteria. Excessive earwax accumulation leads to loss of hearing, resulting in tinnitus.
  4. Modifications of the ear bone: Any stiffening of the middle bone in the ear could impair your hearing and result in this condition.

Certain factors such as smoking, age, sex (men are prone to this disorder) and heart related disorders increase the risks of being affected by this condition.

Treatment
The treatment of this condition begins with the identification of the underlying condition, if any. The various treatment options are –

  1. Removal of earwax: Excess earwax has gotten rid of which can relieve symptoms of tinnitus.
  2. Suppression of noise: Certain machines, known as white noise machines, produce random sounds such as the sound of rain or the sounds of waves, thus eliminating the ‘hearing’ of sounds which are common to this condition.
  3. Medications: Certain medications such as alprazolam and nortriptyline can help reduce the severity of the symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ent-specialist.

I can understand your difficulty. This kind of problem can be effectively treated by homoeopathy with proper follow up. You may opt for private consultation. The medicine tackles the root of the problem, acts internally and gradually without adverse effects. It heals from inside out unlike superficial treatment of an ointment.

Vertigo and dizziness

Vertigo can be caused by many reasons:

Bppv or positional vertigo
It is a disorder of inner ear where tiny crystals in the inner ear get dislodged from their place and fall in the semicircular canals. This causes brief spells of spinning (vertigo) for few seconds or minutes with change in position.
Vestibular therapy helps repositioning of these particles and helps getting rid of the vertigo completely if diagnosed and treated correctly.

Vestibular neuritis and labrynthitis (inflammation of the ear connecting inner ear to the brain)
This can take few weeks to months to resolve and vestibular therapy can help speed up recovery and improve function in daily activities.

Age related symptoms
Dizziness and balance problems due to decreased vision, decreased sensations, slowed reflexes, degeneration in spine and other leg joints, weakness in muscles, other neurological problems such as paralysis, parkinson's etc. And side effects of medications.
Fall prevention and balance rehabilitation can help to increase independence and quality of daily living.

Cervicogenic dizziness that is neck related dizziness.
Problems in the neck due to injury or pain can cause feeling of wooziness or unsteadiness or feeling of heaviness in head.
Combination of vestibular therapy and manual therapy for the neck can help decrease dizziness.

There are many causes for vertigo and dizziness and a thorough evaluation is necessary to diagnose.

DORL, MBBS

I'm having acid like feeling early in the morning with a feel of acid at my throat. What should I do?
This is due to lack of protective layer of mouth which is mucus and saliva, the reason is lack of hydration which leads to concentrate acid, hence this leads to acidity, to prevent it you should keep yourself hydrated in this dry weather, take good amount of semi solids like shakes lemon juices, sugarcane juice, and lassie curds any of milk products like cold coffee, hot coffee, this will definitely benefit you.

Hi, try to wipe out the water first with an ear bud as cotton in bud will absorb the water. Then lie down on the same side on which side water is in ear on bed pillow on below the ear and give few gentle jerks on the pillow so that with the gravitational force and jerks, water will flow down out of the ear. Again wipe out the remaining left water with an ear bud carefully. After this get a homoeopathic medicine by the name of mullein oil/ pour 2 drops of this in the affected ear, leave it for few minutes. It will make clear the ear. At last, visit an ent specialist to get an ear check-up.

Hi If you have never experienced  this problem, then you need to start  *an antibiotic  immediately.  *A decongestant  medicine *Avoid water entry in the ear. *Avoid shampooing for atleast 10 days till the ear discharge dries up. *Get a Pure tone audiometry and tympanometry done. These tests can detect ear drum perforation. Otoendoscopy  may also be done Ear discharge may occur due to acute or chronic otitis media. Your symptoms  appear to be of Acute otitis media. In this case ear discharge occurs after a small perforation  in the ear drum due to pus buildup.  But if you have had the problem previously  too it may be due to Chronic otitis media. In that case you have to also start an ear drop and may need surgery.

Firstly get his throat subjected to cultre and sensitivity. If is due to infective nature, then treat infection with appropriate treatment. If it due to acid reflux, then he should take proton pump inhibitors in appropriate dose before breakfast.
