Are You Taking Care of Your Aging Parents Dental Needs?

Blog by Dr. Ratnika agarwal, dental surgeon/owner of smile up dental care implant center, pune

Advancing age puts many seniors at risk for a number of oral health problems, such as:

Darkened teeth. Caused, to some extent, by changes in dentin -- the bone-like tissue that underlies the tooth enamel -- and by a lifetime of consuming stain-causing foods beverages.
Dry mouth. It is caused by reduced saliva flow, which can be a result of cancer treatments as well as certain diseases medication side effects. Many medicines can cause dry mouth.
Diminished sense of taste. While advancing age impairs the sense of taste, diseases, medications,  dentures can also contribute to this sensory loss.
Root decay. This is caused by exposure of the tooth root to decay-causing acids.
Gum disease. Caused by plaque made worse by food left in teeth, use of tobacco products, poor-fitting bridges and dentures, poor diets, and certain diseases, such as anemia, cancer, and diabetes, this is often a problem for older adults.
Tooth loss. Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss.
Uneven jawbone. This is caused by tooth then not replacing missing teeth. This allows the rest of the teeth to drift and shift into open spaces
Denture-induced stomatitis. Ill-fitting dentures, poor dental hygiene, or a buildup of the fungus candida cause this condition, which is inflammation of the tissue underlying a denture.
Thrush. Diseases or drugs that affect the immune system can trigger the overgrowth of the fungus candida in mouth

Age in and of itself is not a dominant or sole factor in determining oral health. However, certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the hands and fingers, may make brushing or flossing teeth difficult to impossible to perform. Drugs can also affect oral health and may make a change in your dental treatment necessary.

Oral hygiene tips for seniors:

Daily brushing flossing of natural teeth is essential to keeping them in good oral health. Plaque can build up quickly on the teeth of seniors, especially if oral hygiene is neglected, & lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

To maintain good oral health, it's important for all individuals -- regardless of age -- to:

Brush at least twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste
Floss at least once a day
Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash once or twice a day
Visit our team of experience dentist at smile up dental care implant center on a regular schedule for cleaning an oral exam. We will be very happy to serve you.

What seniors can expect during a dental exam

If you're a senior headed for a check up, our dentistry team will conduct a thorough history dental exam to provide you with the best solutions to resolve the problems from its root cause. Questions asked during a dental history will include:

The approximate date of your last dental visit and reason for the visit
If you have noticed any recent changes in your mouth
If you have noticed any loose or sensitive teeth
If you have noticed any difficulty tasting, chewing, or swallowing
If you have any pain, discomfort, sores, or bleeding in your mouth
If you have noticed any lumps, bumps, or swellings in your mouth

During an oral exam, our experience team of dentists will check the following: your face & neck (for skin discoloration, moles, sores); your bite (for any problems in how the teeth come together while opening closing your mouth); your jaw (for signs of clicking and popping in the temporomandibular joint); your lymph nodes salivary glands (for any sign of swelling or lumps); your inner cheeks (for infections, ulcers, traumatic injuries); your tongue and other interior surfaces -- floor of the mouth, soft and hard palate, gum tissue (for signs of infection or oral cancer); and your teeth (for decay, condition of fillings, and cracks).

If you wear dentures or other appliances, our dentist team will ask a few questions about when you wear your dentures and when you take them out (if removable). He or she will also look for any irritation or problems in the areas in the mouth that the appliance touches, and examine the denture or appliance itself (looking for any worn or broken areas).

Please call our team on 8237802848 / 020-27041188 or visit Dr. Ratnika agarwal at smile up dental care implant center, pune today and get your elders dental check-up today! we provide dental solutions for all age groups.

Sir I am suffering from throat infection for last four days, despite of all naturopathy efforts, i.E. Neti etc. I am a chronic UTRI patient, but things remain in control with naturopathy efforts. Please suggest the remedy.

MRCP (UK), DNB, MD

Dear Your history is unclear. 4 days or chronic? Do get a cbc done if you have fever. Also try gargles, and plain paracetamol. You can come to private consult @ lybrate with reports Regards

Is it safe to give pedicloryl syrup to 4 months old baby? if yes then in what quantity? the baby is all the time cranky and is not having proper sleep. Only sleep for an hour max and thn wakes up and cry. Please suggest what to do?

DNB (Pediatrics), Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Bhiwadi
No medication is advisable for a routine problem so I would not recommend you to give pedicloryl for it as it would only give a immediate relief but would not solve the root problem. It is important to identify the problem. Inadequate feeding, improper sleeping atmosphere or temperature (too warm or too cold) too much noise etc. Are some of the most common problems. A healthy baby feeds for 15-20 mins at one time which should be followed by burping for 10-15 mins for a comfortable stomach and sleep. Try to look for the root problem before turning to medicine.

Overcome With Teenager Challenges

During the adolescent years the teenager is developing a strong drive to separate from family in preparation for higher education and independent living. As we know this can create enormous conflicts incorporating excitement, fears and sometimes aggression. As parents it can be quite challenge to set aside our own reactivity and provide a safe and loving environment for this development.

Homoeopathy can help families and support teenagers with the challenges faced as they transition from childhood into adulthood.

Gradually start an exercise program, eat right and continue breast-feeding to help shed those pounds. Breastfeed Your Baby. Breast-feeding your baby can help you shed pounds. ... Start Exercising. Walking after a C section can speed recovery. ... Eat Healthy. Eat a healthy breakfast. ... Limit Unhealthy Foods. Breast-feeding moms lose more weight three months post-partum than moms who don’t breast-feed. If you continue to breast-feed after your baby is 4 to 6 months, you will continue to lose weight. Speak to your doctor first, but after six to eight weeks you can gradually increase your activity level and start an exercise routine. Start slowly and engage in aerobic and toning exercises. Eat five to six small meals a day and never skip a meal. Drink eight to nine glasses of fluid a day – preferably water. Every new mom should be able to indulge in dessert now and then, but do so sparingly. Cakes, cookies, ice cream and candy contain a lot of saturated fat, sugar and calories, which will make the numbers on the scale creep up rather than down. Snacking is important, but avoid salty snacks, such as potato chips, and choose fruits and vegetables instead. Steer clear of soda, juice and other sugary beverages. Their sugar and calorie content can add up, preventing you from losing weight.

My baby girl is 2.5 month old and she is in formula feed but not taking enough feed and doing vomit once in a day. What should I do. Her birth weight was 2.75 and now she is 4.5. Her weight is enough or not?

MBBS DCH
Pediatrician, Gandhinagar
Her weight is absolutely normal. Why are you giving formula feed? 1-2 vomiting per day is normal. Don't give formula with bottle.

If your baby is exclusively breastfed, it doesn't matter if he does not pass stool everyday. Some breastfed babies go without passing stools for a week, but it is perfectly normal provided they are exclusively breastfed.

I am over weight and want to be on liquid diet, raw veggies, fruits, whole grain food and low fat diary. But my concern is my baby is just a year old and she is on breastfeeding. If I go on this diet will my milk supply decrease as the caloric intake should be for a lactating mother is more then 2000. If possible give me a 2000 calorie diet plan for a day.

If you are overweight nothing will happen and the calories will be spent from your over fat. Make sure you take all nutrients by supplements or diet.
