-drink plenty of fluids (veg/tomato soups, dal water/coconut water/herbal tea etc), and eat nutritious food (like sprouts). Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine -treatment: a cold usually lasts for a week or two. Gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. Take only lukewarm water to drink during the day -use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation. -tablet nasorest-p once/twice daily may ease breathing. -do steam inhalation once or twice daily.

Sometimes , I hear less. And almost it is normal. Why it happens I do not know.

DNB (Neurosurgery) , MBBS
Neurosurgeon,
This is not a neurosurgical question though I would like to explain. There is a communication between middle ear and throat. It's called as eustachian tube. It regulates pressure inside ear cavity. You can feel 'click' in your ear everytime you swallow.Patency of the tube and atmospheric pressure can affect hearing for the time being. Like in airplane because of pressurised cabins you tend to hear less and your hearing improves as you swallow something. It's completely physiological. Nothing serious. Persistent deafness needs investigations in consultation with Ent surgeon .

I have started giving my 11 month baby buffalo milk with water on 50: 50 ratio from 4 months. But since then he has been getting lot of cough and sometimes he even vomits at night while coughing. I give him bottle with 120 ml milk twice during the night and once I feed him. During the day I give him aata soup, banana, roti, rice, etc. Of whatever we cook at home. Is milk the cause of his cough? If yes, what milk would be best suited for him then?

lybrate-user if you are sure that it started after the milk then it can be reason for that as different individual reacts to food differently. As natural product is best to feed I will not advise you to stop it. I can suggest you a homeopathic medicine. Give tuberculinum bovinum 200 1 dose to the baby. There may be further requirement of doses but for that you need to consult as the repetition is always case specific in homeopathy.

Asthma in Children: Diagnosis and Treatment

MAMC, MRCPCH, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Noida
Asthma in Children: Diagnosis and Treatment

Has your child been coughing frequently? Is the cough chronic in nature, making your child breathe rapidly and does he/she complain about a tightened chest? These symptoms signify that your child is having asthma. Asthma is a medical condition characterized by paroxysmal wheezing respiration dyspnoea. It is common in children and an affected child experiences difficulty in breathing, and a whizzing sound is produced, especially during expiration. Asthma may lead to severe health complications and needs immediate diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnosis: The diagnosis of asthma is based on the symptoms, medical history and a physical examination of the child.

The different modes of asthma diagnosis are as follows:

  1. Medical history and symptoms: You must tell the doctor about any history of breathing trouble with your child or whether there are chances of other inherited health conditions. You must explain your child's symptoms properly, which may include coughing, wheezing, chest pain or tightness and others if observed.
  2. Physical examination: A physical exam will be carried out in your child where the doctor will listen to his heart and lungs, and look for eye or nose allergies.
  3. Medical tests: A chest X-ray of the child has to be carried out, along with a simple lung function test known as spirometry. This test measures the amount of air present in the lungs and determines how fast it can be exhaled. Spirometry enables a doctor to determine the severity of the asthma. Some other tests are also carried out for the identification of asthma triggers. They include allergy skin testing, blood tests and X-rays to know if sinus infections are affecting the asthma. An asthma test determines the amount of nitric oxide in your child's breath.

Treatment: Based on your child's severity of asthma symptoms and his medical history, the doctor will provide you with an action plan to treat the same. This action plan explains all the medications your child requires, the dosage and schedule of the medicines. The plan also includes points on what to do when the asthma worsens and when an emergency treatment is required. Anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to children who require bronchodilator medication. All asthma medicines used by adults can be used in case of children but in lower dosages.

You should give the asthma medications to your child using a home nebulizer or a breathing machine. A nebulizer delivers asthma drugs by transforming them from liquid to a mist. The child gets the drug by breathing it via a face mask.

In order to control and manage asthma in children, they must avoid the triggers and should keep away from any source of smoke. A doctor must be consulted to know about the best diagnosis and treatment methods.

Tips to Prepare Your Child For First Dental Visit

Tips to Prepare Your Child For First Dental Visit

For a child, the first visit to the dentist can be panicky. This is because they don't realize what's in store. Children get a better idea about dentists after getting some information about the visit. We, as grown ups, must be set up to answer the inquiries and instruct our children in the most ideal way.

The following are some valuable tips on the best way to set up a child for the first dentist appointment:

  1. Guardians regularly ask when they ought to take their child for the first ever dental visit. The best time to begin taking children for a dental checkup is either when their first tooth pops out, or right around their first birthday. Expert dentists are capable of instantly recognizing any potential issues with the development and advancement of the jaw and delicate palate. Children's teeth are more porous and defenseless to decay than grown-up's teeth; so early mediation is a basic to guarantee those small teeth staying sound. It is also recommended that guardians begin brushing their child's teeth when they start coming out, utilizing a delicate toothbrush and plain water. Brushing should be started as early as possible.
  2. It's never too early to begin acquainting your kids with tooth brushing and knowledge of oral health. The best time to begin is before your kid's first dental visit. Youngsters love to find out about their bodies, and love to grin, touch, and investigate new things. There are many fun ways to impart oral health education to children. The more agreeable they are with their mouth and teeth, the less demanding your youngster's first dental visit will be.
  3. Tooth brushing is an essential piece of our everyday self-care, and it is our habit. A child, after being introduced to a brush and a toothbrush will take a certain time period to make daily brushing a habit. Guardians and the kids can brush their teeth "together". It is essential to note that toothbrushes are apparatuses, not toys, and that infants and babies ought to be firmly directed.
  4. Little children, are extremely insightful and touchy to the states of mind of people around them. Children regularly reflect our conduct. When we are casual and upbeat, children will probably be loose, as well. Children are additionally more casual when they are prepared for or taught something. Invest energy conversing with children about going to the dentist. You can also discuss what the dentist will do, emphatically.
  5. Always choose the most trustworthy dentist who is friendly and knows how to handle a child on his first dentist visit.

A child's first dentist appointment is a special one, and you should prepare him accordingly.

Sir, what kind of food is better for 6months baby boy?

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician,
Frequency: after 6 months you need to start weaning foods apart from breastfeeding. For next one month: 1-2 times other foods (rest breast or formula feeding) from 7th month: 2-3 times other foods, increase to 4 from 8th month and 5 from 9th month. After that 6 times food, plus breastfeeding. As you can see you shouldnot stop breastfeeding, taper it down slowly. After one year day time food plus night breastfeeding. Type 1. You can start weaning foods like rice gruel or kheer or boiled apple and boiled vegetables or cerelac, etc. Initially for one month give only once or twice a day. Rest should be breastfeeding and formula. 3. Exact quantity varies from baby to baby. Don't force feed every time. The moment he refuses to feed wait and try again after an hour or so. 4. Feed in calm and dark place to avoid distractions. 5. After 7 months gradually add home available foods (low salt low spice) like idli, kitchdi, dhal rice, etc in soft form (mashed with hands) 6. Add oil or ghee to each food item. 7. Avoid cows milk till 1 year. Consistency almost liquid like till 7 months, semisolids from 8 months soft solids from 10 months egg yellow from 8 months, white from 1 year fruits and vegetables all types in plenty (atleast two servings each per day) all vegetables can be boiled and given. Apple can be boiled while other fruits like banana papaya orange etc can be given without boiling.

Hi lybtrate user, a newborn baby can pass stool for 10 to 15 times a day or sometimes it will not pass stool for altogether 5-6 days, both the conditions are normal, so don't worry about it. This happens because babies are on only milk diet. As far as gases are concerned burping after every feed will be very useful.

If your baby is" Active, Alert, passing urine-6-8 times/day, Accepting&tolerating breast milkand more important if above symptom does not hurt your baby. It might be just viral illness. Give only normal saline nebulisation. Most probably its just a viral imfection. Resolve spontenously.
