Health Benefits of LEMON WATER

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition, DNHE, P.G. Diploma in Panchkarma, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Hapur
Health Benefits of LEMON WATER
Health Benefits of Lemon Water.

1. Improves Digestion

Several components in lemon stimulate your liver to produce more bile needed for healthy digestion. Also, lemon assists the digestive system in flushing unwanted materials and toxins out of the body.
A daily glass of warm lemon water helps relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, belching and bloating.
It also prevents constipation and diarrhea by promoting smooth bowel functioning. The American Cancer Society recommends this healthy drink to cancer patients to help stimulate bowel movements.

2. Aids Weight Loss

If you are trying to lose weight, drinking a glass of warm lemon water with honey will definitely help you reach your goal. Lemon is high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings and keeps you feeling full for a longer time.
Also, the combination of warm water, honey and lemon creates a more alkaline atmosphere in your stomach helping you lose weight faster.

3. Clears Skin

Daily consumption of warm lemon water can make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin. It helps purify your blood and encourages growth of new blood cells.
Also, the high vitamin C content as well as other antioxidants in lemon helps keep the skin free from wrinkles and blemishes and helps combat free-radical damage.
The water and honey add restorative, antibacterial and collagen-boosting properties to promote your skin health.

4. Supports Immune System

Warm lemon water also boosts the immune system. Being rich in vitamin C, lemon helps boost the immune system and assists the body in fighting colds and flu.
Plus, lemon enhances the body’s ability to absorb iron, an important nutrient for a healthy immune system. Lemon also contains saponins, which have antimicrobial properties that help keep infections at bay.

5. Treats Bad Breath

The acidic nature of lemon, combined with the medicinal properties of honey and water, can help eliminate bad breath. It cleanses the mouth and activates production of saliva that kills odor-causing bacteria.
Lemon water also helps get rid of the white film on your tongue that usually develops while you sleep. This white film consists of decaying food and bacteria that cause bad breath.

6. Balances pH Levels

Lemon is one of the best alkalizing foods for the body as it contains both citric and ascorbic acid that help maintain the pH levels. A good pH level is essential as too much acidity in the body can be inflammatory.
Drinking lemon water regularly on an empty stomach in the morning helps remove overall acidity in the body, including uric acid in the joints that is one of the primary causes of pain and inflammation.

7. Increases Energy

The nourishing elements like vitamins B and C, phosphorous, proteins and carbohydrates present in lemon make it a natural energizing agent. It hydrates and oxygenates the body to keep you feeling revitalized, energized and refreshed.
Also, as lemon contains more negative-charged ions, it provides instant energy when it enters the digestive tract. Plus, the scent of lemon has mood-enhancing and energizing properties.

8. Cures Throat Infections

The antibacterial properties of lemon aid in fighting problems related to throat infections, a sore throat and tonsillitis.
In fact, people who drink a glass of warm lemon water each morning are at a lower risk of developing throat infections. This healthy drink even helps prevent respiratory problems like asthma.

Are Today vaginal contraceptive pills effective to avoid pregnancy If my wife use it before intercourse?

Obstetrician, Pune
Are Today vaginal contraceptive pills effective to avoid pregnancy If my wife use it before intercourse?
Hello lybrate-user, I hope health wise you are doing good. Let me explain your doubt. Active ingredient of Today contraceptive is Nonoxynol 9. This is strictly for vaginal use only. This is 24 hour vaginal contraceptive measure to prevent the pregnancy but in clinical trials it has been noted that women got pregnant even after using this method in correct manner. I advice you, your wife can use Today vaginal contraceptive sponge but at the same time you should also use barrier method (condom). Your wife should not use Today vaginal contraceptive if 1) she had history of toxic shock syndrome 2) she is menstruating 3) she is allergic to nonoxynol 9. Your wife should stop using Today vaginal contraceptive if 1) you or your wife get rash, burning sensation or itching of genital parts. 2) your wife gets abdominal pain, foul smell vaginal discharge or fever with chills. 3) if she becomes pregnant. Your wife should not keep this Today vaginal contraceptive sponge more than thirty hours in vagina. She should not remove the sponge before 6 hours of last intercourse. No contraceptive measure gives 100% prevention from pregnancy. Each and every contraceptive method have their own failure rate. So be careful.

Bones Health - Do You Think Exercising Is Important For It?

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics

Bones Health - Do You Think Exercising Is Important For It?

Did you know that in addition to your diet, exercise is one of the best ways to make sure that you never lie on a hospital bed with a surgeon treating you for a bone disorder? Medical expertise has constantly pointed out to the fact that regular exercise makes your bones less likely to suffer from wear and tear during old age.

As you exercise, your muscles become stronger, your bone density increases and your balance improves. Of course, it goes without saying that you need to follow certain precautions before you exercise to avoid certain injuries.

Before starting any exercise program, make sure that you prepare your body for exercise. A brief warm up helps you to get your muscles ready for exercise. It also makes sure that your chances of injury are drastically reduced.

Here are some tips to keep your bones healthy:

  1. Weight lifting: Weight lifting is a type of exercise that, if done correctly, will be extremely beneficial for your bones. You can opt for simple bodyweight exercises such as pushups and squats, which build muscle as well as strength. Avoid using very heavy weights as it causes back-related problems such as slipped disk.

  2. Yoga: Yoga is another method of exercise which is very beneficial for bones and joints. The premise of yoga is static strength building wherein you hold a pose or an exercise for a certain period of time; this helps in strengthening your muscles. Along with your muscles, your bones also become stronger as you get fitter. Yoga is repetitive stress which is good for flexibility and hence keeps your joints supple and muscles in good shape. There are certain asanas which are weight bearing and anti-gravity postures can strengthen your bones.

  3. Swimming: Swimming again is a good aerobic exercise and is good for back and over all fitness but doesn't strengthen bone per se. It is a way to keep you healthy. Swimming is a cardiovascular exercise, which is also known for its calorie burning capabilities. It is also very effective is incinerating fat and keeping your skeletal system healthy. Whereas walking and jogging and running certainly build your bones as they are weight bearing exercises.

  4. Pilates: Pilates is a new form of exercise that has been gaining a lot of steam lately. It does not require much equipment, as you can get started with just a mat. It is very effective in working your spine and the hips, thus keeping your lower back strong. A weak lower back increases the chances of bone disorders drastically.

Love Making In Pregnancy

Love Making In Pregnancy

Sneha and Arun walked into my cabin. The couple was excited about the first baby. It was just third month of pregnancy and second visit to me. This time the mother was also accompanying the couple. The mother looked happy and watchful too. After the consultation we had a quick chat and then they got up to leave. This time Arun allowed the mother to exit first and turned back with a shy smile. Sneha looked in two minds… Whether to ask or not to ask? And I knew the question that was coming my way. As expected the question was about whether they could have sex or no?

Most Indian couples do not discuss this with anyone. They rely on myths and beliefs or lay literature. This adds further confusion! Like the famous Shake sphere’s quote “To do or not to do, that is the real (unanswered) question” for the young couples. Commonly people believe that sex during pregnancy is a big NO- NO. People believe that intercourse can harm the pregnancy. Surprisingly many doctors also advice the same to their patients! While few advice not to have sex in first three months and some advice not to have sex when the bump grows bigger!! So what does the evidence say?

Well, there is a clear scientific evidence that sex during pregnancy can NOT harm the baby per say. However there are few conditions such as placenta praevia (placenta is low placed), repeated miscarriages, opened up or short cervix, previous premature deliveries or if there is bleeding or leaking most doctors will advise against intercourse. It is important to understand that the baby is inside a balloon of water which is inside the uterus. The lower end of the uterus called cervix is closed and plugged with a mucus plug which does not allow entry of even germs (microorganisms) upwards.

The baby inside the balloon of water in the uterus which has closed cervix

However it is also important to understand that although the baby is protected the woman can contact infections from her male partner. These infections could be simple fungal infection, bacterial, viral infection too. In order to prevent such infections it is better to use a condom (or barrier contraceptive). During the pregnancy the hormones in the body surge making the tissues softer and congested. So a pregnant woman may rarely experience few drops of bleeding after intercourse.

So here are few tips for the young couples:

  • In first three months pregnant woman may feel exhausted due to nausea, vomiting and may not feel interested in sex. The partner must understand her problem and support her.
  • In second trimester and third trimester, the increasing bump needs to be taken into consideration. Change of position may help. Many women find “side to side” or “woman on top” position more comfortable.
  • Especially after six months most women may find it more and more uncomfortable. Some may feel minimal uterine contractions which are “innocent”. Intimacy does not necessarily mean penetrative sexual intercourse. The couple can make love without penetrative intercourse too.
  • In this delicate period of pregnancy, women undergo a complete emotional and physical turmoil. The partner must encourage her, caress her, support her. Sexual intercourse is perfectly fine if the woman is comfortable. Expression of love is important and being intimate is a necessity!
