I spit too much while jogging, & it spit is very salty, like we spit during common cold. I am having this problem from last 2 years. What should I do?

BDS, Non-Resident J.R. in Dept. of Orthodontics, Certified oral implantologist, Advanced Aesthetics, Digital Smile Designer
Dentist, Jammu
This is due to excessive saline content or mixing of sweat with spit. Reduce salt intake or else increase water intake to strike a positive balance.

I am 20 years old. The problem is, someone told me to eat chewing gum to get rid of bubbly cheeks. But this resulted in giving me two grooves on either side over my cheeks. This looks really awkward. Can you please tell me how to get rid of these grooves and get my plain smooth face back as previous?

Hello Lybrate user, The two grooves on either side of your cheek is because of overstimulation of your jaw muscle which is known as masseter muscle .also known as masseter hypertrophy which is because of continuously chewing of chewing gums .it's the same principle as you do more workout in gym to make more muscles. The more you clench your teeth the more work your masseter muscle has to do .it does not happen when you normally chew your food. I would advise you to stop this habit of continuously chewing on chewing gum. Eventually the groove which appears due to hypertrophy of masseter muscle will disappear but it will take some time. And who says bubbly cheeks are not cute.

Whitening or Bleaching can whiten your yellow teeth, another option is veneers, best can be decided once you visit the dental facility on clinical examination.

Hi doctor! I'm 21 years old. My teeth is so weak from the root. It's not broken or something like that. There is no bleeding or pain or infection. What should I do? What is the cause of this?

- Use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! Brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - Floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - Control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - Rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - Stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - Eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - Try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a "water pick," to clear debris from around the gum line. - Have your dentures aligned as needed. - You may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person.

My wife is suffering from Salivary Gland Stones, is there any home remedies or homeopathic.

BDS, MDS
Dentist, Gorakhpur
My wife is suffering from Salivary Gland Stones, is there any home remedies or homeopathic.
There are many solutions available to her problem depending upon involvement of salivary glands, number and size of the stones. It can be manually removed or by ultrasonic shock waves (lithotripsy). Surgical removal of salivary glands would be the last modality one should think of. Hence, which treatment she requires will depend on salivary gland imaging. Consult a dental specialist in your area.

Surgery for removal of wisdom tooth is nothing to be so scared about. Most commonly the procedure is done under local anaesthesia and should take about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the condition of your tooth. Following the surgery you can expect some pain and swelling which is controlled by use of antibiotics and painkillers. Usually the sutures are removed after 7 days of the surgery. In the meantime there are some food restrictions you need to follow, like eating a soft diet.

Oral thrush is a fungal infection which occurs due to dry mouth, uncontrolled diabetes and weak immune system with debilitating disease or patient on corticosteroids. You may need fluconazole & renal safety dosage of amphotericin b (iv drugs to be used only with the advice of oral & maxillofacial surgeons). Kindly consult an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need candid ointment until then. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash. Advance procedures can be done with laser.
