Cosmetic Treatments for Hair Loss

Loss of hair can have adverse effects on your physical as well as mental health. Not only does hair loss affect your self-esteem or appeal, it also hints at an underlying health problem. There could be many reasons for the loss of hair. ‘Alopecia areata’ is a condition wherein sudden loss of hair begins with one or more circular bald patches that might or might not overlap.

Some of the common cosmetic treatments for hair loss include:

  1. Hair Grafting or Transplant: Hair transplant or grafting is a procedure that uses surgery to move hair follicles from one spot in the body to another and is mainly used to treat male pattern baldness. The transplantations are carried out in outpatient form, with local anesthesia and mild sedation. Harvesting of hair follicles is done using various methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the common harvesting techniques are:
  2. Strip Harvesting: A strip of skin from the scalp or from any other spot where there is good growth of hair is harvested by the surgeon.
  3. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): Follicular Unit Extraction is a procedure which involves the singular extraction of each hair follicle without any removal of strip of tissue.
  4. Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT): Follicular Unit Transplant involves the removal of a small strip of tissue from the rear part of the head. The donor hair follicles would be extracted from this strip.
  5. Robotic Hair Restoration: The devices associated with Robotic Hair Restoration utilize robotic arms and cameras to provide assistance to the surgeon during the FUE procedure.
  6. Scalp Reduction: This cosmetic procedure involves removal of skin (non-hair-bearing) from the scalp, which ensures that the remaining skin (hair-bearing) can be extended to the area that it is capable of covering the bald spots on the head. This procedure is effective in covering bald areas on the back as well as top of the head. However, it is not favourable for the hairline in the frontal areas of the head.

Know Everything About Acne Problems!

Acne is one of the main problems teenagers and young adolescents have to face in their day to day lives. It is not just an esthetic issue but also a psychological one as the condition can really affect the people emotionally. The main cause for this is the hormonal changes that occur with teenage but also the changing food habits that set in at this age. The oily skin of some people makes it conducive for developing acne, than in people with normal or dry skin.

Types: They can be classified based on severity and type of lesion

  1. Based on severity, they can be mild, moderate, and severe.
  2. Based on the type of lesion, they can be whiteheads, blackheads, bumps, nodular, or cystic.
  3. Based on duration, they can be acute or chronic. The acute phase is more infective and can also be cystic or pustular.

Management: Acne problems can be managed in both therapeutic and preventive mode. Treatment is undertaken to address the issues in the acute phase. Preventive measures can be taken to ensure the incidence of acne is reduced.

Treatment: From a topical treatment point of view, three compounds are commonly used to treat acne.

  1. Retinoids: These are vitamin A derivatives and are useful in treating both blackheads and whiteheads.
  2. Benzoyl peroxide: This over-the-counter product is aimed at reducing the bacteria on the surface of the skin, which in turn reduces the acne.
  3. Antibiotics: In the case of cystic or pustular acne, antibiotics can be prescribed to deal with the issue. These also can be used along with the retinoid or benzoyl peroxide for better effect.

Acne scar removal: For people with severe acne, the scars become a huge cause of concern. These can be removed by:

  1. Laser: A beam of laser is used to get rid of the darker tissue on the surface as a result of acne. This reduces the bacterial concentration and sebum content in the skin, both of which lead to severe acne.
  2. Photofacials: The outer layer is cooled and the inner layer is heated through a probe. This causes the production of collagen, which promotes skin regeneration and helps in getting rid of the scar tissue.

The skin may appear red and swollen for a couple of days, but will gradually improve with time.

General tips to reduce the effect of acne:

  1. Reduce the use of irritants (creams, perfumes, and deodorants in the area of acne).
  2. Stay away from harsh sunlight, or do so with sufficient protection.
  3. Avoid oily food, which worsens the condition.
  4. Drink sufficient water to keep the skin hydrated.
  5. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables for better skin.
  6. Use natural scrubs like fruit peels and reduce chemical use.

What Type of Hair Loss Are You Suffering From?

Hair loss or Alopecia areata is a condition characterized by loss of hair from the scalp and other parts of the body that have hair over a prolonged period of time. Recent research states that losing 100 strands of hair a day is normal. But anything in excess indicates that you might be suffering from this embarrassing condition. Experiencing recurring episodes of hair loss can end up affecting one’s self-confidence, and hence, any sphere of his personal life as well.

What causes hair loss?

  1. Over 95% of hair loss occurs due to hereditary factors coming into play. A family history of this condition can exacerbate one’s risks of developing the condition.
  2. Hair loss can also occur if you have been exposed to increased stress levels of late. Temporary hair loss is also observed in people suffering from mental stress or trauma resulting from an incident, may be the death of a loved one or any other incident that might have brought on shock and stress on the concerned person.
  3. Hair loss can also result from chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Also, certain medications used to combat cancer, depression, heart disorder, birth control and arthritis might also result in significant loss of hair.
  4. Hair loss can occur as a result of thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
  5. Hair loss might also be the result of an auto-immune disorder known as ‘Alopecia Areata’ that results in bald spot formation around the scalp, beard, and eyebrows.
  6. Trichotillomania (a mental condition wherein a person pulls out hair from the scalp, almost unconsciously) can lead to hair loss as well.
  7. Hair loss can also occur as a result of excessive experimentation with your hair. This can include using permanent hair straightening devices, developing curls or tight braids, ponytails, etc.
  8. Hormonal imbalances or change, noticeable mostly during pregnancy or at the onset of menopause can be triggers of hair loss as well.
  9. Ringworm infection can also result in hair loss by damaging the skin of the scalp and hair. However, hair loss tends to get better once the infection is treated.

What Cosmetic Surgeries Do Men Prefer?

What Cosmetic Surgeries Do Men Prefer?

It is not only women who are concerned with their looks as popularly believed, men are as equally concerned about how they look. So, men are no strangers to plastic surgery. They turn to plastic surgery to stay at the top of their game as looking younger, masculine and fit means better chances of achieving success. Physical perfection is considered an imperative if one wishes to rise high in the corporate world.

Here are the top ten most popular cosmetic surgery options that men prefer:

  1. Rhinoplasty: If you have an oversized or flat nose, undergoing rhinoplasty will change the shape of the nose and restructure it completely.
  2. Hair transplant: This procedure is extremely popular among men with male pattern baldness.
  3. Chin enhancement: In this procedure, a silicon implant is placed under the chin to create a new chin shape.
  4. Gynecomastia: This surgery is also called breast reduction. Genetic problems or weight gain can lead to the development of extra fat tissues in the chest and nipple areas. Gynecomastia corrects this development.
  5. Abdominoplasty: Skin on the abdomen can stretch and sag if you lose or gain weight, especially if you are getting older. Commonly known as the tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is used to remove extra skin and re-adjust the skin that remains.
  6. Blepharoplasty: Blepharoplasty is done to correct the appearance and shape of the eyelids. Through this procedure, sagging lower and upper eyelids are tucked into place.
  7. Otoplasty: This plastic surgery is done to reshape the ears. Some people are usually displeased with the shape, orientation and size of their ears, for example, the ears might protrude too much.
  8. Liposuction: Formerly obese people who want to shed the last few kilos of unwanted fat usually opt for liposuction. The fat is mostly removed from the arms and belly.
  9. Neck or face lift: In this procedure, the sagging muscles around the jaw, neck and cheekbones are tautly pulled from certain areas, i.e., rear of the neck, under the hairline and behind the skull. Botox injections can also be used.
  10. Brow lift: Wrinkled forehead and sagging brows are signs of old age which are caused by loss of skin elasticity. To improve the appearance, surgeons may tightly "pull" the sagging skin, or use Botox injections. Botox freezes small segments of the muscle, thus immobilizing and tightening the skin.

What To Choose Between Chemical Peels And Microdermabrasion?

What To Choose Between Chemical Peels And Microdermabrasion?

Chemical peels are used for treating various skin problems. It is a process through which the upper layer of the skin is exfoliated and is replaced by a smoother, wrinkle free and youthful looking skin. The new layer of skin is usually sensitive in nature. Chemical peels are generally used for your face, neck and hand region. They include using an acidic solution for treating the affected areas of your skin.

Chemical Peels are used for treating various skin conditions, such as:

  1. Wrinkles
  2. Pigmentation
  3. Aging
  4. Acne
  5. Damage caused by harmful rays of the sun.

Microdermabrasion is also an exfoliating procedure in which crystal sprays are used for spraying on the surface of your skin for treating the affected layer of your skin. It is used for treating skin problems that are less severe in nature. Microdermabrasion is more skin - friendly as it does not involve the use of any chemical or instruments.

Microdermabrasion is used for treating the below mentioned skin problems:

  • Acne scars
  • Brown spots
  • Wrinkle lines and stretch marks
  • Spots that may appear due to aging
  • Blackheads

Chemical peel enhances your skin color, tone and texture by removing the dead skin cells and is a very effective treatment for treating severe skin problems.

5 Causes That May Grow Men Breast

5 Causes That May Grow Men Breast

Swollen breast tissues in men or boys caused by hormonal (testosterone and estrogen) imbalances is called gynecomastia. Both breasts or one breast, can be affected by gynecomastia. At any point in life, from birth to puberty, even in adulthood, you might develop gynecomastia. Most of the times, gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances, but there might be some underlying causes as well.
Gynecomastia is normally not a serious condition, but it can be difficult to deal with the pain and embarrassment.
It can be cured with surgery or medication, if it doesn't go away on its own.

Symptoms and signs of gynecomastia include:

  • Enlarged glands in the breast tissue
  • Tenderness in the breast

The causes that trigger gynecomastia include:

  1. Hormonal changes: Testosterone and estrogen control the sexual development in men and women respectively. Estrogen is not a hormone that only women produce; men produce it too. When the production of testosterone and estrogen are thrown out of balance, gynecomastia occurs.
  2. Medication: Certain medications such as anabolic steroids, androgens, HIV/AIDS medicines, antibiotics and chemotherapy can cause gynecomastia.
  3. Drugs and alcohol: Substances such as alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines, heroin and methadone cause gynecomastia.
  4. Health condition: Certain factors, such as aging, hypogonadism (hormonal disorder), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), tumors, kidney failure, cirrhosis, liver failure, malnutrition and starvation can lead to gynecomastia.
  5. Herbal products: Essential oils derived from plants such as lavender or tea tree, used in lotions or shampoos, have weak estrogenic actives. They have been said to cause gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia can be cured either with medication or surgery. Surgical options for gynecomastia are, however, limited.

The two surgical options for gynecomastia include:

  • Liposuction: Liposuction only removes the fat from the breast, not the breast gland tissue. It has fewer complications, there is limited or zero blood loss and there is less distortion of the nipple.
  • Mastectomy: Mastectomy removes the gland tissues in the breast. The surgery uses minimal incisions to remove the gland tissue. Also, it involves less time to recover.
