Haver you tried streching your calf muscles, if not do that first. Give icing for your calf muscles and stretch well and followed by streching your quads muscle also. Never do any kind of exercise when your pain is more.

Left side pain can be myalgia and may have to check up. You have to test blood for Hb and TSH to find out the cause of pain.

usually we keep the stiches for 2 weeks. Over any joints. Have you kept it for that duration. Ok now that stiches are out. You have to wait and bending definitely increases the gapping. Redoing the suturing is laborious. Wait for it to heal. But minimise bending so that scarring can be minimal.

Knee Replacement Surgery - Pain and Recovery

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Delhi
Knee Replacement Surgery - Pain and Recovery

If you are about to undergo a knee replacement surgery, it is important to know the extent of pain that it involves, and the recovery period that follows. A knee replacement surgery is a major surgery, and a patient needs a lot of time to adjust to the replacement of his knee. The time of recovery depends on the patient and form of surgery that has been undertaken. The steps of recovery after a knee replacement surgery are as follows:

After surgery

  • After the surgery, you will be given painkillers which you can self-administer using a switch. You may also require an oxygen mask or blood transfusion.
  • You may require crutches and should walk within a frame. The ability to get back to walking without any help depends on the patient.
  • You will be taught exercises for strengthening your knees in the hospital by a physiotherapist.
  • It is likely for you to experience some initial discomfort during exercising and walking, as your legs may become swollen.
  • Putting on a passive motion machine may be beneficial in restoring movement in your knees when you are lying in bed.
  • It is likely for you to spend a period of three to five days in the hospital, based on your condition and its progress.
  • An enhanced recovery program may be suggested by your surgeon in which you may start walking from the surgery day itself.

Recovery at home

  • It is normal for you to feel tired and fatigued at home in the beginning. A knee replacement surgery is a major surgery, and the tissues and muscles around your knees require time to heal properly.
  • You should arrange for a person who would help you while you go out for a few weeks after the surgery.
  • It is very important for you to practice the exercises prescribed by your physiotherapist. This is a vital part of speedy recovery and you should not avoid them.
  • You will be able to stop depending on crutches or walking frames and go back to your regular activities and schedule, six weeks after the surgery.
  • The swelling and pain associated with the surgery may take around three months to depart.

The recovery process usually continues for two years after undergoing the surgery. During this period, scar tissue heals and your muscles get restored through exercises. It is recommended for you to avoid any kind of extreme sports or movements in which there is a risk of falling, such as mountain biking, or skiing. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an orthopedist.

Start with back strengthening exercises like bridging, back press, bhujangasan and many others. Apply ice pack or hot water bag to painful area 2-3 times a day. If you have pain during exercises then stop it immediately and consult a good physiotherapist doctor nearby you.

Quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

I think you have ligament injury/sprain. Apply ice for 20 minutes for 4 times in a day. It will heal your injury. Apply analgesic ointment then apply crep bandage. And take rest. If possible concern qualified physiotherapist. They will help you.

Goodmorning, I would like you take the advice of hot and cold fermentation for your calf and foot first. Wait for 2 days after which you could do a mild stretching of calf for 10 to 15 seconds. If pain still persists then plase do a tens treatment (physio session) for your leg. That will reduce a lot of pain in your leg. Then do a couple of ankle toe movements and then rotation for your foot. At night when you are sleeping you could also elevate your leg so that there is better flow of blood in your leg.

You might be suffering from osteoarthritis for the confirmation of which we would need to do a clinical examination and an x-ray. In the meanwhile you should start using western toilets only, avoid squatting or sitting cross legged at all. Start taking a diet rich in calcium and vitamin d like eggs, non veg food if possible, take an early morning walk in sunlight which help replenish your body stores of vit. D the deformity of your knees would have to be assessed on an x-ray and if found to be severe arthritis you might have to undergo a replacement. You should start the conservative treatment I suggested and follow up. Hope his helps.

When I get up in the morning my finger joints don' t bend. They are stiff and painful. The ring finger on my right hand gets stuck at right angle many times. And needs to be manually pulled back to position.

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. Stiffness is a particular symptom and usually present in inflammatory disorders. Are you suffering from any inflammatory disease for which you are taking any treatment? your finger getting stuck at right angles with subsequent difficulty in straightening it can be due to swelling in tendon sheath which we call as trigger fingers. Please enclose all relevant investigations and treatment records till now so that I can understand and prescribe accordingly. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena
