Relation Between Vitamin D Deficiency And Bone Problems!

Relation Between Vitamin D Deficiency And Bone Problems!

When we speak of bone health, calcium is usually the hero of the story. However, by itself, calcium is not enough for healthy bones. Vitamin D is equally important for healthy bones and the prevention of orthopedic conditions.

What does Vitamin D do?
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium from the food being eaten. It also controls the calcium and phosphate levels in the body. This is critical for the growth and development of new bones. Vitamin D also controls how much calcium and phosphates are being expelled by the body. In this way, vitamin D helps strengthen the bones and improve overall bone health.

Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D is not commonly found in food. It is present only in certain types of oily fishes, egg yolks and mushrooms. Most of the vitamin D we eat comes from fortified cereals, breads and dairy products. The sun is an important source of vitamin D but exposing yourself to too much sunlight could cause various skin problems. Thus, vitamin D deficiency is very common. When it comes to bone health, vitamin D deficiency can cause low-density bones. This, in turn, can cause rickets and osteoporosis. People with vitamin D deficiency are likely to suffer frequent fractures. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause skeletal deformities such as bow legs and a stooped spine.

Vitamin D and Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a musculoskeletal condition that is marked by low bone density. Studies have shown that people with osteoporosis have lower levels of vitamin D as compared to others. Some studies also suggest that fractures are more common in winter as compared to summer. The winter sun is often hazy and many days can go by without strong sunlight. Thus it can be inferred that people do not get their required quota of vitamin D from the sunlight in winters leading to a deficiency and aggravated osteoporosis-related fractures.

Who is most susceptible to bone conditions caused by vitamin D deficiency?
Vitamin D deficiency is a very common condition across the globe. Some surveys have claimed that approximately 30% of the global population suffers from vitamin D deficiency. People with dark skin, women and elderly people are most susceptible to this deficiency. People suffering from kidney diseases may also be affected by vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D supplements are usually very helpful in combatting this deficiency. These can be taken by young children as well as adults.

Sir I have a problem in my knee for 2 days because I am a runner. so, what can I do.?
Hi Thanks for your query and Welcome to Lybrate. I am Dr Akshay from Fortis Hospital, New Delhi. You have a history of pain in your knees since 2 days. Can you tell me whether you had any twisting injury to your knee region? Also you have not mentioned whether you have pain, swelling, any instability etc in the affected knee? You can start with activity modification, ice packs and gentle anti inflammatory medication initially and let me know in 2-3 days time how you are feeling? Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation. Thanks & Regards Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena Consultant Orthopaedics Fortis Hospital, New Delhi

I am 24 year old. I am facing pain in my legs and couldnt climb stairs. Could you please help me any suggestion.

I am 24 year old. I am facing pain in my legs and couldnt climb stairs. Could you please help me any suggestion.
Hi. Is there any history of injury or hurt to the area? any underlying medical condition? the pain in legs can be because of - muscle cramps (due to tiredness or dehydration), shin splints (doing activity over and over on hard surfaces can bring this on. You may also be more likely to get shin splints if you have flat feet or your feet turn outward. Rest your legs to feel better. Ice helps), tendinitis (you can get it from overworking the calf muscle or climbing the stairs, apply ice to get some relief), sprains (do rest, ice, compression & elevation). Other causes are varicose veins, arterial disease, sciatica, diabetic neuropathy. Medication: meantime, take homoeopathic medicines - arnica 200 and rhus tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply schwabe's topi-arnica and topi mp gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. And wrap crepe bandage over it. Get back to me thereafter.

3 Best Stretches for Sciatica

MPT, BPT
Physiotherapist, Noida
3 Best Stretches for Sciatica

I    Advanced Piriformis Stretch

An excellent stretch for the entire body, this pose especially targets the hips and piriformis muscle but is only for those who have sufficient flexibility. When performed properly, this stretch can help prevent injury and relieve pain through increased range of motion

1.Keeping your torso upright, extend your left leg behind and bend your right leg inward across the front of your body.Lower your torso to the floor until you feel the stretch in the hips and glutes.

2.Keep your lower body in the start position with your arms out in front for support.Hold the stretch for 20 to 30 seconds and repeat on the opposite side.

II    IT Band and Glute Rope Stretch

If you’re prone to IT band syndrome or runner’s knee, this is a good stretch for you. When this band gets tight, bad things can happen to your gait, not to mention a lot of pain and suffering.

1.Lie on your back with both legs extended and the rope wrapped around the mid sole of your right foot. Hold both sides of the rope in your left hand, and extend your right arm to the side.

2.Keeping your right leg extended, pull the rope to the left side to bring the right leg across the body until you feel a stretch in the outer leg. Your right arm and left leg shouldn’t leave the floor. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds and repeat on the opposite side.

III  Adductor Rope Stretch

The hip adductors play a big role in everyday movements such as walking and sitting down. They provide stability to the hip joint, allowing better performance in physical activities. Having good range of motion in these muscles is critical for an active lifestyle.

1. Lie fully extended on your back with the rope around the middle of the right foot. Take both ends of the rope over the inside of the ankle and wrap it around to the outside of the calf.Hold both ends of the rope in your right hand.

2.Pull out to the right as far as is comfortable, feeling the stretch along the inside of the right leg. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds and repeat on the opposite side.
