Few Reasons A Mother Should Breastfeed Her Baby

Few Reasons A Mother Should Breastfeed Her Baby

While the decision to breastfeed or not to is a personal one, however, it is known to have a number of benefits for both the baby and the mother. Ideally, a newborn baby should be fed only mother’s milk for the first six months of his or her life. This not only provides a nutritious diet for the infant, but it can also protect the baby from a number of diseases that could affect them now and in the years to come.

Here are a few reasons a mother should breastfeed her baby

  1. Well balanced nutrition: Mother’s milk is better than any form of infant formula. This is because it contains the perfect mix of vitamins, proteins and fats essential for your baby’s growth. Also, these nutrients are made available to the baby is easy to digest form which increases the amount of nutrition absorbed by the baby’s body. By breastfeeding a baby, the chances of them being overweight in their later years is also reduced.
  2. Immunity booster: Along with nutrients breast milk is also rich in antibodies that protect your baby against viral and bacterial infections. Breastfeeding a baby reduces their risk of suffering from asthma and other allergies in future and also reduces the frequency of ear infections, respiratory diseases and diarrhea.
  3. Better bonding: When a baby is being breastfed it is held close to the mother’s body and skin to skin contact is established. This benefits both the baby and the mother and helps build a strong bond between them. For the baby, this skin to skin contact builds a sense of security and for the mother, breastfeeding the baby can help deal with postpartum depression and make her feel connected to the baby.
  4. Helps the mother recover: Breastfeeding helps the mother get her body back to its pre-pregnancy condition faster. This is because breastfeeding burns calories and hence helps the mother lose pregnancy weight faster. It also triggers the release of hormones such as oxytocin which reduce uterine bleeding after delivery and help the uterus get back to its original size.

When breastfeeding a baby it is important to recognize when the baby is hungry and feed him or her before they start crying. Typically an infant should feed on each breast for 10-20 minutes at a stretch. It is also important to be patient and comfortable while breastfeeding so as to allow milk to flow evenly and to prevent fatigue.

Suckling baby is the only solution for increasing breastmilk. Take plenty of water and eat good food. You have to continue breastfeeding at least till the age of 2 years.

My daughter gets stomach ache during first two days of menstruation cycle. What steps should be taken to relieve her of the pain?

Give her antispasmodic tablet on the first day of anticipated period, even if she is having irregular one. Taking tablet won't harm her but severe pain and collapse may.

Sexual Abuse In Children

Sexual Abuse In Children

Sexual abuse of children may sound very scary and degrading, but the truth is it is a very prevalent problem. As much we may not want to believe, the number of boys and girls who are sexually abused, and that too by close family and friends is very high. This may be difficult to digest, but is the truth. The sexual abuse in male and female children is 50% in each group which is again unbelievable but true.

What is considered child sexual abuse?

Child sexual abuse includes touching and non-touching activity. Some examples of touching activity include:

  1. touching a child's genitals or private parts for sexual pleasure.
  2. making a child touch someone else's genitals, play sexual games or have sex putting objects or body parts (like fingers, tongue or penis) inside the vagina, in the mouth or in the anus of a child for sexual pleasure.

The thing to ponder, however, is that people who abuse children have a deeper problem. This could be due to a combination of social and psychological issues that the person is facing. Often helping identify the underlying problem could be a solution to the problem too, but this is rarely done. If you think a child could be subjected to abuse, look out for the following symptoms.

  1. A feeling of guilt or shame.
  2. Irritability and anger with minimal reasons.
  3. Mood swings, often uncommon in children.
  4. Feeling very isolated and sad.
  5. Very anxious and angry.
  6. Symptoms of withdrawal, not wanting to be left alone.
  7. Sleeplessness.
  8. Fatigue and pain in the back, legs.
  9. Loss of appetite, energy.
  10. Bruises (look out for these, which may not be in visible areas).

How to handle?

Given the fact that the offender is in close family and/or friends circle, the suspicion levels are quite low.

  1. The first step, therefore, is to open up and talk with either your parents or someone close.
  2. Look for support groups which can be very helpful.
  3. Do not be isolated though the urge is very strong.
  4. Build a daily schedule to ensure your routine continues (studies, work, etc.).
  5. Focus on exercise or other passions as they help you deviate your mind.
  6. Be sure to not be alone with the offender, stay in a group.
  7. Give out a strong message saying it is not acceptable, and do not keep quiet.

Homoeopathic remedies:

Homoeopathy can come rescue of the offender all well as the victim. If we see according to the point of view of who committed the crime, many reasons may come to the light and we can be treated accordingly. Usually, these criminals have a very painful and sad childhood. This could lead them to commit a crime like child abuse.

The following are the medicines to treat such people with anti-social behaviour-

  1. Aur.
  2. Bar-C.
  3. Hyoscyamus.
  4. Stramonium.
  5. Merc.
  6. Tarentula.
  7. Med.
  8. Nux V.
  9. Syphilinear.

There are certain homoeopathic medicines which are helpful in the treatment of children who are victimized. The most common symptom is nightmares.

  1. Calc.carb.
  2. Aloes.
  3. Phosphorous.
  4. Cechris.
  5. Sepia.
  6. Staphysagria.

For treatment for actual physical and mental symptoms of the victim child, following homoeopathic medicines may help:

  1. Aconite.
  2. Ignatia.
  3. Arnica.
  4. Staphysagria.
  5. Calendula
  6. Nat. mur.

Homeopathy is a safe and effective way to treat the victims as well as the culprits of sexual abuse. It focuses on the way patients have reacted to events and the personality of the patient. It helps to bring complete harmony of physical, mental and social well being.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a homeopath.

My baby is 6 months old and is suffering from chronic constipation from last two months. In start we tried natural remedies like cotton insertion and sugar water but see no improvement. At last we visited his paediatrician and he advised to give him Glycerine suppository for 3 days and after that to continue adult PICLIN Laxative 6 ml per day (3 ml twice) to cure his constipation. So, we are giving him above medication from his 6th month start and now he passes stool after 2 or 3 days with less difficulty. We tried stopping giving him PICLIN after his 6th month completion but after that baby can’t poop and also decreases his feed intake. His current weight is 6.1 KG and he is teething as well. Regarding his diet, he is completely on breast feed and we have started giving him yellow dalpani from last one month. We have tried 20-25 ml of water intake and 2 tablespoon of pear puree from last 3 days but it does not help. To continue on PICLIN we have some worries and doubts as follows: 1. Is it safe to give PICLIN (Adults) 6 ml daily to baby of just 6 months and any side effects that it can cause when baby grows? 2. For how much time we should continue giving him above medicine? 3. What can be the reason of his severe constipation? 4. Is there any natural remedy to cure his constipation rather then giving him medications? 5. Any other suggestion/medication to cure his constipation? 6. Is glycerine suppository is better than PICLIN? It would be very helpful for any of suggestions.

The first line of treatment that almost everyone resorts to is that of taking laxatives. It is likely to be any of the most frequently advertised one bought over the counter. It may even be something recommended by an elder in the family. The biggest disadvantage of such laxatives is that they are habit forming. Once you start takingthem, you cannot leave them. Otherwise, you will not be able to evacuate your bowels in a satisfactory manner. Here, Homeopathy offers the biggest advantage. The homeopathic medicines do not work as laxatives. This means that you should not expect them to work as short term quick fixes. Rather, they work to improve the digestive system which has lost its proper and smooth functioning. The peristaltic movement of the intestines, which is responsible for pushing out the waste matter is often compromised in patients who are constipated. Homeopathy  intends to cure the root cause of constipation. It is therefore natural that these medicines are going to take some time to get things going. Ultimately, it is effective at restoring this peristaltic movement to the normal self You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects

Why Kids Are Such Cold Magnets
On average, kids under age 3 catch six to eight colds a year. "We think that since most children are encountering viruses for the first time, their immune systems aren't able to kill them as quickly as when they encounter them again. What's more, because kids aren't overly concerned about having a runny nose, the virus tends to end up on their hands, clothing, and toys--where it can live for 30 minutes. When another child touches an infected toy and then rubs her nose or eyes, she can catch the cold.

However, having lots of sniffles early in life may protect kids later on. Researchers have found that children who develop frequent colds in preschool catch fewer colds during their school years--presumably because their immune systems have learned to recognize and fight off the bugs. And a German study has found that babies who have more than one cold before their first birthday are less likely to develop asthma by age 7.

My child is of 4 months. He got loose motion due to infection because I feed him through bottle also please suggest me remedy.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Ghaziabad
Dear , firstly, if mother's milk is adequate, don't give him bottle feeds. If not adequate, give him only infant milk formula, not open cow milk. Also, although tedious, katori/spoon feeding is more hygienic. If you have to use a bottle, then make sure you use a sterile bottle every time, and make sure gaps between feeds are at least 3 hrs.
