Back Pain – What You Should Know

Back Pain – What You Should Know

Ow! My aching back! Most of us have stuttered these words at one time or another. Worldwide back pain affects 4 out of 5 people at some point in life. It is one of the top ten high burden diseases and is largely responsible for decreased quality of life and disability in young adults.

Back Pain Symptoms

Back pain can range from a dull nagging ache to sudden debilitating pain. It can affect anyone at any age, but becomes more common as you grow older. People, who are overweight, lead a sedentary lifestyle, under extreme psychological stress and smokers have been found to be at a higher risk for back pain. Some of the common symptoms that occur with back pain include stiffness, trouble flexing your back, difficulty with range of motion, sharp shooting pain, pain radiating down the legs and numbness in the legs or groin.

Common Causes

Back pain that develops abruptly, often after some activity, is known as acute pain. If your pain lasts for more than three months, it is known as chronic pain. Most causes of acute back pain are related to the muscles and/or ligaments, widely known as strains. Back strains usually result from activities such as heavy lifting, overuse, abrupt movement and poor postures. Chronic pains may be associated with infections, trauma, spinal deformities and problems with the discs, nerves and bones.

Understanding the root cause of your back pain is key to preventing it from worsening or recurring. A better resolution of this problem can be achieved when you learn more and start identifying the factors that trigger your pain.

10 Tips to Beat Back Pain

Most episodes of back pain resolve within a few days on its own. Sadly, for some people it can return and can be the most frustrating and bothersome problem to manage. Here are few tips that you can try to minimise your discomfort and prevent the back pain from becoming a long-term issue.

  • Ice the area – Keep ice on the area for the first one or two days. Ice helps slow down inflammation that occurs after an injury. You may switch to heat after two days. Do not place heat or ice directly on your skin and do not keep it for more than 20 minutes at a time.
  • Be active  – Continue your normal activities such as walking and mild exercises, but don’t overdo it. Avoid sitting at a place for more than half an hour, get up and do some mild stretching.
  • Make your workstation ergonomic – Use chairs that have proper back support. Avoid hunching forward often and keep both your feet firmly planted on the floor.
  • Maintain good posture – Avoid stooping or bending over from your waist when lifting heavy objects. Lift with bent knees.
  • Wear footwear with low heels – High heels threaten good posture and put more pressure on the lower spine.
  • De-stress – Anxiety, stress and depression can worsen back pain. Engage in activities that keep you happy.
  • Get enough sleep – Inadequate sleep can aggravate your back pain. Sleep plays a major role in healing your body and mind. Sleep on a mattress that provides good back support. Keep a pillow between your knees if sleeping on your sides. If sleeping on your back, keep a pillow under your knees. These measures help maintain neutral spine position.
  • Quit smoking – Smokers are at a greater risk of developing bone problems that worsen back discomfort.
  • Exercise – Once your back pain has subsided, perform exercises to strengthen your back muscles.
  • Shed some weight – Being overweight can put excess pressure on your spine. Losing weight can help relieve your back pain.

There is often no single solution for back pain. You may need to explore and find out what works best for you, which often involves a process of trial and error.

It is advised that you consult a qualified doctor if your back pain does not subside within 72 hours. Depending on your type of back pain, your doctor may recommend blood tests and/or imaging studies to identify the root cause of your pain. Depending on your specific condition, treatment options can include oral medications, injections or surgery. You may also choose complementary therapies such as exercises, massage, yoga, biofeedback, acupuncture, physiotherapy and chiropractic treatments that may offer some relief.

How Does Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Help Your Muscles and Bones?

How Does Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Help Your Muscles and Bones?

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a highly effective and innovative treatment option in a variety of fields, from urology to cosmetology including orthopedics. This is a non-invasive method that employs high-energy shockwaves to bring about the healing of the affected tissues. It has been found to provide good results for recalcitrant orthopaedic problems like frozen shoulder to certain chronic degenerative or tendon conditions such as Achilles tendinitis (injury of the Achilles' tendon due to overuse) and plantar fasciitis in heel pain.

How does it work?

The procedure is basically an outpatient/ daycare job. It involves the application of a non-invasive probe to the affected tissue. This is followed by the external generation of shockwaves focused on the target area. The shockwaves cause a force to be created that brings about healing. Although it's still not clear as to why this kind of therapy works, the dominant understanding is that shockwaves render an improvement in the flow of blood so as to promote the body to fix and heal itself.

Depending on individual cases, high or low energy waves may be employed. While pain may occur during the transmission of high energy waves and would require short general anaesthesia, low-energy ESWT is carried out without anesthesia.

What problems can this form of therapy effectively tackle?

ESWT can be used to treat a number of musculoskeletal disorders. From plantar fasciitis (heel pain), tennis elbow, shoulder rotator cuff, degenerated tendons (Achilles' tendon) to hip and knee pain, the therapy has been found to reduce pain as well as accelerate healing in individuals.

Complications are very few and far between with this therapy. Individuals who suffer from hypersensitivity or poor sensation in the affected area are usually not recommended this procedure. Even individuals with heart conditions, seizures and open sores need to consult a doctor before going forward with the therapy.

The therapy has also been found to be very effective in bone healing as well as treatment of bone necrosis (a disease that occurs due to permanent or temporary loss of blood flow to the bones). Additionally in place of surgery, ESWT may also be a valuable option for non-healing fractures.

Frozen shoulder is otherwise called as adhesive capsulitis. The capsule gets contracted and tight and inflammation ensues. If not taken care of early with physio and exercises the pain continues and movement gets further restricted. Analgesics and physio is the key. Please get in touch for any further assistance.

Not all patients with joint pain need surgery. Most of them can be managed without surgery. Physiotherapy along with medicines will help. Rule out diabetes, vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with a soft bedding on it. Any way take caldikind plus (mankind)1tab odx10days paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days do knee exercises. Gradually develop your walking & standing stamina. It may have to be further investigated make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take.

Hello Dr. I am suffering from back pain and I got MRI of lumber spine with hip joint screening done for it. The result says that" Spondylolysis noted at L5 level with minimal anterolisthesis of L5 over S1 vertebra. Vertebrae otherwise appear normal in size and shape and show normal marrow signal intensity. No evidence of discovertebral osteomyelitis or abnormal para- spinal collection. Dessicative changes seen involving L4-L5 intervertebral disc in form of reduced signal intensity on T2W images. Posterior bulging of L4-L5 disc is seen with annular tear indenting thecal sac. epiphyseal joints and para-spinal muscles are unremarkable. Lower dorsal cord and conus appear normal. No evidence of intraspinal mass. AP DIAMETERS: D12-L1 - 17 MM. L1-L2 - 17MM. L2-L3 - 16MM. L3-L4 - 15MM. L4-L5 - 12MM. L5-S1 - 13MM Coronal fat suppressed images through both S. I. & hip joints appear unremarkable except subtle focal hyperintense marrow signals involving sacrum on right side. Opinion: The Mr. findings show spondylolysis at L5 level with minimal anterolisthesis of L5 over S1 vertebra. Posterior bulging of L4-L5 disc with annular tear indenting thecal sac. The Dr. I've consulted suggest me the pain management treatment. In which medicine is injected at the part of pain. N the injection costs around RS 18000. But it's not the permanent solution he said. Hello dear there is no permanent treatment for it but injection or surgery gave long time effect in this. If you have sevear pain then go for these. If it is not too sevear then you have to consult with a good physiotherapists and take treatment of lumbar traction and ift or swd if give good relief. Even you go for blood test of vitamin b12 and vitamin d3 if there is deficiency then take supplement for it. Do regular exercise programme suggested by your physiotherapy doctor. It will subside for long time may be life long you don't get this pain. But firstly you have to take rest hot fermentation and continue with medicine. Thanks and regards.

Dear lybrate-user, Get X-ray (Both knees - AP and Lat. Views) or MRI done to rule out any structural joint abnormalities. Meanwhile, gentle massage over knees with lukewarm herbal pain relieving oils daily for about 15-20 minutes and hot fomentation afterwards will greatly help in subsiding the pain. Ayurveda’s Panchakarma offers specialized treatment of JANU BASTI for knee pains - these procedures would give strength to your knee and reduce the pain and stiffness. Regular oiling the joint will improve the lubrication also. Use knee caps over the joints and avoid over exertion of the joint. Avoid sitting crossed legs. This will greatly help. Although some herbal medicines might also help you but after proper history taking. Please update with your valuable feedback after 15 days.\

Hi, I am feeling back pain quite a while & knee pain also, problem since last 7 year, but now not bearable,
Go for fasting once a week. You can go for absolute fasting or rely on a liquid diet to digest ama (toxin). Fasting should be followed by hot fomentation or by taking a bath with lukewarm water or steam bath. After fasting and fomentation, mix powdered long pepper, black pepper and dried ginger in equal quantities and take 1 teaspoon of this powdered mix with lukewarm water twice a day. This will help you restore your digestive fire. Take one tablespoon of castor oil before going to bed, once or twice a week. It helps in cleansing ama (toxin) build up and balancing vata. Mix equal quantities of powdered fenugreek seeds, turmeric and ginger powder. Take one teaspoon daily in the morning and evening. For dry fomentation of the affected joints, take a cloth and fold it into four, fill it with hot and sand make a potli (bag) out of it. Use this bundle for the fomentation of different joints. This is very helpful in reducing pain and swelling.
