Hi I am 34 year old male, I used to smoke a lot few months back, now I totally quit smoking, now the problem is I am having constipation and couldn't sleep at night. I can't sleep for more then 3-4 hrs, and due to this my life is badly affected. Whole day I feel stressed and uncomfortable, please suggest me what to do.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Deal with your stress with a counselor to reduce its impact in these problems you are having. There is a remote connection between quitting smoking and constipation but this will disappear after some time. Eat a lot of fiber vegetables and fruits in the meantime. For the sleep problem, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i. E. Breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep.

She (28 year) is over sensitive and short tempered ,irritating. At the same time too much concerned about cleaning washing hand for longer time than usual when she is tensed but other thing she washes normally. Whenever I talk in high speech she react very rudely and sometime shout loudly and aggressively abused if her anger outburst. She takes pressure unnecessarily which is not concerned to her, and try to interfere everyone's thought according to her if it is not so, she annoyed with herself and start washing hand and she does it very cautiously. If she is disturbed again and again she will do. I consulted neuro psychiatrist and he prescribed medicine but she refused to take it due to fear that it may side effect or worsen the condition but doctor advised to continue. Then she promised to correct it by herself without medicine and now she is in better position but her anger outburst if something doesn't happen as per her wish. Now she is not able to control her anger and emotion even though she tried to do. And after sometime she relaxed and apologies for misbehaving and regret it. If I leave her to do those activity she becomes furious. If I try to stop hand washing she starts shouting. So what should I do, she wants to recover but without taking medicine. So old help me out to deal this situation because it is intolerable for me and making situation worsen day by day.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Fear of contamination, excess hand washing, checking, anxiety and irritability are some of the features of OCD. It is advisable to take her to a psychiatrist for proper assessment and diagnosis. They will be able to assess her properly and treat accordingly. Without taking her to a psychiatrist it is not possible to confirm the diagnosis or start any treatment. Consult a psychiatrist at the earliest. The best treatment is a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. Ask the psychiatrist for a home visit if she is refusing to go to them.

Hello lybrate user, first of all you have to investigate the reason behind your weakness. If there's anything that you are hiding that is excessive masturbation , any difficult situation, anxiety, apprehension related to your performance, etc. then provide details so that I can help you with that.

Is psychosis treatable? What is are the types? How to get rid of psychosis? How is it developed?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Is psychosis treatable? What is are the types? How to get rid of psychosis? How is it developed?
Psychosis may occur as a result of a psychiatric illness like schizophrenia. In other instances, it may be caused by a health condition, medications, or drug use. Possible symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, talking incoherently and agitation. The person with the condition usually isn't aware of his or her behaviour. Treatment may include medication and talk therapy. It is Common and More than 1 million cases per year (India) Treatable by a medical professional Requires a medical diagnosis Lab tests or imaging not required. The following list provides the names and brief descriptions of different types of psychotic illness. Schizophrenia The term schizophrenia refers to a type of psychosis in which a person experiences some psychotic symptoms for at least six months, with a significant decline in the person’s ability to function. The symptoms and length of the illness vary from person to person. Schizophreniform disorder This type of psychosis is the same as schizophrenia except that the symptoms have lasted for less than six months. The illness may completely resolve or may persist and progress to other psychiatric diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder. Bipolar illness With this type of illness the symptoms of psychosis relate more to mood disturbance than to thought disturbance. A person will experience mood elevations (mania) and sometimes depression, which may persist or fluctuate in intensity. When psychotic symptoms arise, they often reflect the person’s mood. For example, people who are depressed may hear voices that put them down. People who are experiencing an elevated mood may believe they are special and are capable of doing amazing things. Schizoaffective disorder During this type of psychosis, a person will experience symptoms of schizophrenia and symptoms of a mood disturbance, either at the same time or alternating over time. Depression with psychotic features Sometimes a person will experience a severe depression with symptoms of psychosis without the mania associated with bipolar disorder. This type of depression is referred to as a psychotic depression or depression with psychotic features. Drug-induced psychosis The use of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, LSD, amphetamines and alcohol can sometimes cause psychotic symptoms to appear. Once the effects of the drugs or alcohol wear off, the symptoms of psychosis will usually resolve. However, the symptoms themselves may require medical treatment. Organic psychosis Symptoms of psychosis may appear as a result of a physical illness or a head injury. A thorough medical examination should be conducted to rule out or confirm this type of psychosis. This examination may involve some tests or investigations such as a brain scan. Brief psychotic disorder Sometimes symptoms of psychosis come on suddenly and, in some cases, are triggered in response to a major stress in the person’s life, such as a death in the family. This type of psychosis usually lasts less than a month. Delusional disorder This type of psychosis consists of very strong and fixed beliefs in things that are not true. Changes in perception, such as hallucinations, are not seen in this illness. A delusional disorder does not usually affect a person’s ability to function. It may be difficult to make a diagnosis in the early stages. Therefore it may not be helpful to focus on a particular diagnosis. It is also important to remember that everyone’s experience of psychosis is different. Course and outcome will vary from person to person.

Dear , you should be able to distinguish between obsession and depression. Obsession also brings on symptoms identical to depression but they are short lived. You are obsessed because of the thoughts about your girl friend. This is quite natural. I suggest psychological counseling for you. Take care.

Hi lybrate-user, depression is not a serious problem, most individuals have depression from mild to severe. Depression can be solved depending upon individual's confidence and emotional balance. He can get rid of depression, poor sleeping habits and constant rumination due to some incident. First should bring him out from his own world, he should see, feel, perceive everything the way a normal person feels, perceives, sees. First find out what he likes the most, each and every individual has got an habit or an hobby that can become crazy, should make him addictive to such an habit like reading, watching or hobbies like swimming, gardening should praise or encourage them to perform such actions slowly trying to divert them. You can of course send them to gym or aerobics it is an good approach to bring out depression or remove depression within him. You allow him to outburst his depression by allowing him to cry, shout or scream aloud in a room, it is an other way to bring out depression away from him. Slowly he will heal as time goes on within an month or two months definitely. Suggest you make him follow these steps one by one slowly and make him occupied with good entertainment and then he will be fine. Hoping for good. Best wishes and regards,

Hi lybrate-user. Neurotic spectrum disorders can present with a variety of symptoms. Some of which have been listed in various books and diagnostic classifications. However, they do not constitute the exhaustive list and thus anxiety and depression can be of several different forms some of which we may not even know. The art of effective treatment is to have a flexible and customized approach. Unfortunately, people practicing one specific technique/system prefer their own ways. But it may not be as simple as that. Therefore, if you do not find help or inadequate support from one way, we should look for another ways. There are many including pharmacotherapies, psychotherapies, meditation based interventions and so on. What helps in a specific case has to be found out. Please visit a near psychiatrist/clinical psychologist and try to find a more suitable/effective technique for yourself under the expert guidance. All the best.
