Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

M.Phil - Psychology, Masters In Psychology, BA-Psychology
Psychologist, Delhi

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

People with OCD may have symptoms of obsessions, compulsions, or both. These symptoms can interfere with all aspects of life, such as work, school, and personal relationships.

Obsessions are repeated thoughts, urges, or mental images that cause anxiety. Common symptoms include:

  • Fear of germs or contamination
  • Unwanted forbidden or taboo thoughts involving sex, religion, and harm
  • Aggressive thoughts towards others or self
  • Having things symmetrical or in a perfect order

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that a person with OCD feels the urge to do in response to an obsessive thought. Common compulsions include:

  • Excessive cleaning and/or handwashing
  • Ordering and arranging things in a particular, precise way
  • Repeatedly checking on things, such as repeatedly checking to see if the door is locked or that the oven is off
  • Compulsive counting

Not all rituals or habits are compulsions. Everyone double checks things sometimes. But a person with OCD generally:

  • Can't control his or her thoughts or behaviors, even when those thoughts or behaviors are recognized as excessive
  • Spends at least 1 hour a day on these thoughts or behaviors
  • Doesn’t get pleasure when performing the behaviors or rituals, but may feel brief relief from the anxiety the thoughts cause
  • Experiences significant problems in their daily life due to these thoughts or behaviors.

OCD can hamper all spheres of life if not treated on time. please consult a psychiatrist and a psychologist if you are suffering from any of the above mentioned symptoms.

My father suffering from Parkinson's from last 4 months. Age 55. Now a days constipation is too high. Very hard stool...
I am not a homeopathic doctor and if you are looking for one, you are probably looking at the wrong place here. I understand, however, that you are really concerned about your father and the medications that he is being given that are not improving his condition, and on the contrary maybe making things worse. This may be because of the medications or as a natural course of the disease. I believe his medications need some tweaking so that you get the results that you expect and he recovers. However I can give you suggestions after I evaluate him further and do a more thorough evaluation. Look forward to hearing from you. If you need help with booking an appointment online with me on this website either text, audio or video appointment for confidential and private consultation you may do so by contacting the helpdesk of Lybrate. I m 25 years male and have not concentrate any work or many time during the work I have many mistake so what I do?

Post graduate in counselling psychology
Psychologist,
Difficulty concentrating is a normal and periodic occurrence for most people. Tiredness and emotional stress can cause concentration problems in most people. Hormonal changes at your age can also affect your thinking and concentration capabilities for some time. However if you are suffering from an excessive degree of concentration problem then you should consult an expert. There are certain psychological conditions that cause concentration problems too, like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd), bipolar disorder (bpd).

Dear, at your age, memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please consult me. Take care.

I lost a close friend last year and now I feel very depressed so can uh please help me?
Let your friends sole rest in peace. Find and new friend and make him close. Life is not about only one person, what ever God does its for our good. Believe in that and stop feeling low. At some point we tend to forget our parents after their death and move on and so are our friends. When you stop at some point without any output then you are loosing the real essence off life. Remember your friend may not like your depressed face so give him a smile and move on.

STRESS CONTROL There are many ways to tame your stress and keep it at bay. Here are 20 tips to tame your stress today, and keep the stress monsters at bay. 1.Perform diaphragmatic or deep breathing exercises. 2.Lie face down on the floor and begin breathing deeply and slowly, with your hands resting under your face. Do this for five minutes. 3.Sit in a reclining chair. Put a hand on your abdomen and a hand on your chest. As you breathe, make sure the hand on your abdomen is moving up and down rather than one on your chest. If the hand on your abdomen is moving you are breathing deeply and slowly. 4.Try progressive muscle relaxation or “deep muscle” relaxation. Progressively tense and relax each muscle group in your body. Learn the difference between muscle tension and relaxation. 5.Meditate. Use visualization or imagery to help you learn to be one with your thoughts. Sit quietly with your eyes closed, imagining the sights, sounds and smells of your favorite place, such as a beach or mountain retreat. 6.Exercise regularly or take up yoga. 7.Consult a psychologist about the use of biofeedback 8.Make time for music, art or other hobbies that help relax and distract you. 9.Learn to identify and monitor stressors. Come up with an organized plan for handling stressful situations. Be careful not to overgeneralize negative reactions to things. 10.Make a list of the important things you need to handle each day. Try to follow the list so you feel organized and on top of things. Put together a coping plan step by step so you have a sense of mastery. 11.Keep an eye on things that might suggest you’re not coping well. For example, are you smoking or drinking more, or sleeping less? 12.Keep a list of the large and little hassles in your day versus the major stressful events in your life. This helps you focus on the fact that you’re keeping track of and managing those as well as you can. 13.Set aside a time every day to work on relaxation. 14.Avoid using caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, junk food, binge eating and other drugs as your primary means for coping with stress. While they can be helpful once in awhile, using them as your only or usual method will result in longer-term problems, such as weight problems or alcoholism. 15.Learn to just say, “No” occasionally. It won’t hurt other people’s feelings as much as you think and is simply a method to be more assertive in your own life, to better help you meet your own needs. 16.Get the right amount of sleep. For most people, this is seven to nine hours a night. 17.Cultivate a sense of humor; laugh. 18.Research has shown that having a close, confiding relationship protects you from many stresses. 19.Don’t run from your problems! This only makes them worse. 20.Talk to your family and friends. See if they can help. If these tips don’t help, or you’ve tried a lot of them with little luck in better taming the stress in your life, it may be time to consider taking it up a notch. A mental health professional — such as a psychologist — can help teach you more effective methods for handling stress in a healthy way in your life. Such psychotherapy is short-term and time-limited, with a focus on helping you better deal with stress. Remember — we do have control over the stress and choices we make in our lives. It sometimes takes a little practice and effort to put some of these techniques into play in your life. But once you do so, you may be pleasantly surprised at the positive benefits you’ll receive If you need any prescription please consult me as we cannot prescribe in questions session. Regards.

I have been using cigarette for more than 3 4 years, now I want to quit it but I can't so please suggest any means to quit this.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Masters in psychology counselling
Psychologist, Hyderabad
Dear lybrate-user, it is good that you wants to stop smoking, try this method we are destroying our health by smoking normal human takes oxygen into lungs 12 -15 times per minute (12 - 15 breaths) lungs mixes oxygen in blood and it purifies our blood, by smoking we are mixing not only oxygen adding and mixing bad elements like nicotine etc. In oxygen, that spoils our blood and our body all organs like lungs, heart, kidney etc. In our body. How to quit: by willingness and willpower" where there is a will there is a way" reduce one by one day by day.

Hi, females usually have plenty of mood swings due to hormonal imbalances, especiallly during this age. Apart from this, if there are some stressors like family issues, love issues, or stress at the office, which you are finding difficult to handle, you need to share them with either your friends or family and try to sort out the things with them. Make sure your work is not affected. In case your problem is slowly affecting your work, then probably you need some professional help.

In fact this is the time to decide and implement what your goal of life is'girl things' will happen frequently in future also. But time to make your career won't come back. This is not a disease but distraction. You seem to be intelligent boy as you understand the importance of studies and so you are asking how to focus. Your this determination to focus on studies and not to fall pray to distractions will help you. Set your goal. Any time distraction comes remind yourself of it. By disiplining the mind you will be able to concentrate better. When we are walking the stray cats come to us to ask for food if you will give them they will cling on to you. If you fight more than what is called normal and it seems like you are the only one who is being hurt, then you may need to get out of this relationship. These are the signs of a toxic relationship. This may sound harsh to you but you have to get out of this situation if you are continuously feeling isolated or lonely. There is nothing more important than your mental peace and physical health. These things are not worth your precious time and precious life. You only live once so you better make sure that everyday you live is in a beautiful state. Start having some respect for yourself and feel blessed for the life and family you are given. Don't cry over these things because your parents haven't raised you to this day with so much love to see you in pain and agony. Start taking control of your life and day. Just keep telling yourself that you only live once and start appreciating this wonderful life. You are a beautiful soul and a beautiful person so you should be treated with the same care and respect like everyone else. At the end of the day, only you are responsible for your state. No one can hurt you without your consent. Don't keep the key of your happiness in someone else's pocket. Stay blessed!
