Increase in Fungal infections of Ear with arrival of Monsoon Fungal infection of ear canal, also called as Otomycosis, is a superficial fungal infection of the external auditory canal. It is the most frequently encountered fungal infection in ear, nose and throat clinics. The organisms responsible for this clinical entity are usually fungi especially A. Niger. The fungi are usually secondary invaders of tissue already rendered susceptible by bacterial infections; physical injury or excessive accumulation of wax in the external auditory canal. The fungus tends to grow in humid, dark and warm areas and ear canal is one of the best places, especially in the rainy season. Excessive use of antibiotic ear drops may also be a cause of fungal infection of the ear. The fungal infection of the ear canal usually presents with a itching, irritation, discomfort, pain and scanty discharge from the affected ear. Patients also complain of feeling of blockage in the ear due to collection of fungal material in the canal. Sometimes irritation is so severe that patients tend to insert pins or sharp material in the canal leading to injury or bleeding from the canal. Pruritus and discharge are the most common symptoms which are usually unilateral but bilateral involvement is also been seen. There is greenish or black fuzzy growth on in the canal resembling wet ‘blotting paper with black dots’, which may fill up the entire canal. Careful drying and cleaning of external auditory canal is the first step in treatment, which is done preferably by suction evacuation by an ENT Specialist. The topical therapy with antifungal or other antimicrobial agents is also necessary. After cleaning the canal, antifungal drops, are given. Because the infection can persist asymptomatically, the patient should be re-evaluated at the end of the course of treatment.

Hello, i'm 19 years old, male. I have irritation in my ear like its full and itchy. When I breathe out air passes out of my ear and like it is blocked. I have consulted two ent specialists they just say, your ear canal is fine! this problem happens at least once in a to days. Please help.

MS , MBBS
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Hi,As both ent surgeons whom you have meet have told that your ear canal is fine then the problem could be in the skin of the canal and there could be dermatitis or itchy skin, the other problem of air gushing into the ear and blocked sensation in the ear could be due to some problem in the the nasal end of eustachian tube. Regards to itchy skin you should stop putting buds or things into the ear and use steroid based ear drops for about three to four weeks. Regards to the other problem you needed to be examined once.

I am 35 year old female. I have frequent mouth ulcers. I don't have constipation problem. Please suggest.
Mouth ulcers are aggravating at best and may be extremely painful. Also called canker sores or aphthous ulcers, mouth ulcers can be triggered by various factors, including stress, illness, or simply biting your cheek. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution. Mix a teaspoon or two of salt with a warm glass of water and let it dissolve. Swish the solution in your mouth from side to side, then spit it into the sink. Don’t swallow the salt solution. Repeat this a few times a day, generally after meals and before you go to bed. Apply some honey to the ulcer. Dab a small amount of pure honey onto the ulcer. This may help ease pain and reduce inflammation. Dry the area with a clean cotton swab first, then use a fresh swab to apply the honey. Look for Manuka honey, as it has the most potent antibacterial qualities. If you can’t find it, though, any kind of honey will help fight bacteria. Suck on ice chips. Stay away from acidic and spicy foods. Try vitamin supplements. Vitamins B and C may help to heal mouth ulcers For medication consult online in private.

Do mouth ulcers cause deep inside the mouth almost the throat portion. Or it is a symptom of any other disease.
