Dear , you should be able to distinguish between disappointment and depression. Disappointment also brings on symptoms identical to depression but they are short lived. Were your friend disappointed in the near past? please post a private question to me with every detail. I will help you. Take care.

I am 30 years and addicted to alcohol and smoking. Please advise treatment and medicine ?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology

Dear, tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like nicotine replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. But still you will need will power. For alcohol de-addiction treatment also, you should go to a rehabilitation center. You may consult a physician or deaddiction therapist or a rehabilitation facility for further advise. Take care.

Hi iam rohit am too addicted to cigarette. I smoke 10-12 cigarettes daily and many more something I take cold drink w...
Yes, the nicotine in cigarette smoke can reduce your erectile capacity and over a period of time it can affect yoru sexual potency. Each cigarette you smoke has an effect on your erectile capacity: the nicotine in the cigarette is a vaso-constrictor i.e. it narrows the blood vessels to constrict the blood flow. The erection of the penis is caused by an extra flow of blood to the penis along with a shut down valve that facilitates its engorgement. This action will be compromised. Smoking can also affect men's sperm, which can reduce fertility and also increase risks for birth defects and miscarriage. You are advised to stop smoking immediately.

Feeling Overwhelmed? Best Ways To Help You Manage It!

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Feeling Overwhelmed? Best Ways To Help You Manage It!

Sometimes when a person has too much on their plate, they are left feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. Here are a few ways in which you can manage being overwhelmed and return to a place of control, contentment and relaxation.

  1. Venture out: Trying to work and get your tasks done despite your confusion and feeling of helplessness will not lead you anywhere. You need to step away to have the capacity to see your conditions from a new point of view. Move to an alternate room, get up from your work area, sit on a different couch, go out for a walk or go sit at a bistro. Venturing out from the present circumstance and changing your physical surroundings will help you gain clarity, and move you far from the overwhelming perspective. This is when you can see the solution more clearly.
  2. Vent it out: When you are occupied, it is very easy to lose any feeling and sense of priority and the panic makes everything seem urgent. In reality, there will be things that may require your consideration for a brief span. Hence, the key thing is to have clarity and gain visibility on what you are managing. Attempt a "mind download", where you record everything, with the goal that you can figure out what is obstructing your brain and its functioning.
  3. Requesting help and allowing help: You would be surprised at what number of individuals will offer assistance. Usually, our limited thinking is because we become a problem for ourselves as we disallow others to help us. Sometimes we also think they will say no, thus we do not ask for help. Simply try it out. Request help, and get ready to be surprised at the generosity you might get from others.
  4. Phase out noise: When we feel overwhelmed, it feels soothing to do something to loosen up and relax, such as watching the TV, listening to music, watching the news or playing a game. What we overlook during this time is that the additional data that comes in clutters our mind that further tangles our already overwhelmed senses.
  5. Make continuous improvements: Concentrate on one area at a time. Question yourself: what kind of change would be good for you? Concentrate on little, easy-to-do portions, not an instant upgrade. Say, your employment. Experiment with ten minutes of a sustaining pace. Appreciate how that feels. At that point expand on it. Check whether your well being moves forward. Try to feel positive energy in the bargain.

Treat the sentiment of overwhelming nervousness as a companion, for it is an indicator telling us that we have to slow down. It tells us to readjust our centre of focus and prioritise something else that makes us feel positive and better.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Dear Ravi, It is true that most antidepressants take time to cross the blood brain barrier. But Opipramol reaches brain faster. May be -7 days time. The benefits will come only if it is adequate dose - not just fifty mg. Please consult the doctor again after 1 week. He may increase the dose or add another drug or psychotherapy or relaxation therapy.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Lithium in large doses can affect kidneys. Even uncontrolled diabetes also can affect kidneys. Whether one takes 600 mg or a SR (sustained release) tablet both can affect kidney when used for a long time. Similarly if blood glucose is uncontrolled that too damages the filtering unit of the kidney. Thanks.

I am in depression because of I am not doing hard work to achieve my goal what will I do.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
I am in depression because of I am not doing hard work to achieve my goal what will I do.
The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks The common symptoms are (few might be present in a person with depression) Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort Changes in appetite — often reduced appetite and weight loss, but increased cravings for food and weight gain in some people Anxiety, agitation or restlessness Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that aren't your responsibility Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches General medical conditions and substances causing depression also needs to be ruled out. Consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated.

Taking medicine for controlling anger and regulating sleep will give you short term or temporary relief. But it will have its side effects like getting addicted to the medicine and a few others. Similarly your tolerance level will go up, means, soon you will have to increase the dose to have the same effect on your body. At the age of 34 you are actually damaging your body by taking medicines for managing anger and sleep. Instead of taking medicines, try yoga, pranayama or any other exercise. You may also try counselling. Counselling will help you in identifying and managing your anger triggers/issues. With the help of counselling you will learn to modify your thought processes thereby calming your mind, which will help you in having a sound sleep.

Dear lybrate-user, exam stress is a category of performance anxiety. Due to the stress and anxiety involved, you will not be able to concentrate. You should be able to understand exams and prepare for it. Exams are not a fear factor. They just test your knowledge. If you have the knowledge, why worry about exams? I suggest you to see a psychologist for exam stress counseling. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user, now a days, in the world of nuclear family, everyone accepts the merits of joint family. You must read those articles. In what ways joint family system is far better than nuclear family, you must understand. Even in you office, due to manpower excess, we encounter problems. But we are able to manage it without much stress. At home, they are all our own blood or relatives. Nobody can harm the other. You can talk to any of your family and come a a concensus. Please talk to other people about your stress in a suitable voice and show your helplessness. They will help you overcome this problem. You may also consult a psychologist for advise. Take care.

You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

You must be under a lot of stress. Are you aware of this? the dreams indicate the nature of the pressure i. e. They may be fear related. What are you afraid of to cause this much stress and how long have you been suffering from this condition? you are doing what is called discounting? a loss of awareness due to undue pressure. I suggest you sleep as much as possible on your left ear at night. Meet with a counselor and take that person? s guidance to go to the root cause and deal with it, effectively. You may also attend a personality development course, do regular exercise, meditate, sleep well, eat well, and deal with your emotions through therapy. If you are cooperative, everything should come back to normal pretty soon.

I have sometimes memorization problem I can not retain things for long duration please suggest me some tips that I can reboost my memory.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If you know of any reason why you may be under any stress then meet with a counselor and sort that out. In the meantime do some of these recommendations very faithfully: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid junk food.

Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc. They need to be brought for de addiction which involves You need to consult a psychiatrist and go for 3 steps of de addiction. 1st is detoxification, when alcohol is stopped and the withdrawal is made smooth with minimal discomfort, 2 nd is maintenance and further deaddiction when the physical problems and psychological state of the individual is maintained and anti-craving drugs started 3 rd rehabilitation, when relapse prevention is the goal, while maintaining deaddiction.
