5 Ways To Beat Diabetes

India has the largest number of diabetics in the world. Around 6.2 crore people in India suffer from diabetes. Many patients with diabetes in India are still undiagnosed. More than 95% of these patients have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes results from the body's ineffective use of insulin. It is usually diagnosed in the age group of 35-45. It can be prevented by healthy diet and exercise.

The patients who are diagnosed with diabetes and even those who do not have the disease can benefit by following these 5 effective ways to beat diabetes.

1. Make healthy food choices

Taking care of your diet is one of an essential components to manage and prevent diabetes.

-switch to oils with a high volume of monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats like olive oil, canola oil, soybean oil or rice bran oil. Limit intake to one tablespoon a day.

-restrict intake of foods that have a high glycemic index like white bread, white rice, fatty foods, and soda.

-consume foods with a low glycemic index like multigrain aata, whole grains, daals, most fruits, non-starchy vegetables and carrots.

-limit consumption of fast food. Studies show that young adults who ate fast food more than twice a week developed insulin resistance (a diabetes risk factor) at twice the rate of people who weren't fast food junkies.

2. Watch your weight

Losing weight can help to regulate blood sugar levels.

-if you have type 2 diabetes, losing just 4-6 kgs can lower your glucose levels.

-the way fat is distributed in the body can also impact diabetes risk and management.

-people who have abdominal adiposity (fat around the belly) are more prone to type 2 diabetes than those with fat mostly in the thighs, hips, and buttocks.

3. Exercise regularly

Regular exercise can lower blood glucose and possibly reduce the amount of medication you need to treat diabetes, or even eliminate the need for medication.

-get your doctor's approval before starting an exercise program.

-even if you do not lose any weight, exercise can help keep type 2 diabetes under control.

-start slowly with a low-impact exercise such as walking, swimming or jogging.

-exercise, at least, three times a week for about 30 to 45 minutes.

-warm up for 5 minutes before starting to exercise and cool down for 5 minutes after exercise.

-always carry a source of carbohydrate with you so you'll be ready to treat low blood glucose.

4. Manage stress better

Stress can make blood sugar levels harder to control.

-engage in any relaxation technique to ward off stress.

-the best techniques include yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises.

-you may join a yoga club nearby or else take out 10-15 minutes every day to sit quietly with yourself and practice meditation.

5. Go for regular health check-ups

Diabetes requires lifelong commitment towards following a healthy lifestyle, taking medicines on time and getting regular checkups to detect any complications.

-check your blood sugar levels at home at least once a week.

-get your hba1c levels checked at least twice a year. 

-in addition, make sure that your eyes, kidneys, heart, and skin are in optimal health.

-visit an eye specialist once a year to detect any signs of eye damage (diabetic retinopathy).

-get your kidney function tests done at least 2 times a year.

-inspect your feet regularly for any signs of numbness, pain or growth that may lead to ulceration and complications.

My wife was went to her parents home before 4 months bcoz my job loss. She come before 15 days but her behavior has changed. She has concerns with my current job salary. I think that she is concerned about the future of her daughter, especially if you have lost your job. It seems you have not been responsible to both be unable to keep a job and in the middle of that to have a kid too. I guess that anyone will be worried. Even if your MIL has instructed your wife, you have to develop a relationship of trust with her and give her assurances that you will be responsible. If she still gives you trouble then meet with a marriage counselor and get some help. If the counselor confronts her​ mother's influence that will be more effective and acceptable.

MrSatish Kumar, To give any suggestions I need to know her weight, (kgs), height, waist circumference, fasting and PP sugar levels (current), HbA1c%, dietary pattern and extent of exercise done daily. Based on these details I will be able to guide. It is better if you come in a private conversation where I will be able to give specific guidelines. In the mean time she should avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods and pastries. Consume more of green leafy vegetables and salads, use whole grain flour for making roti and chapati, (no maida). Exercise daily for at least 1 hour that will help in reducing insulin resistance and improve it's action, plus increase glucose utilisation.

Thanks for the query. You cannot work on a specific body part. You have to work on overall fat loss and toning. But, dietary changes can speed up the effects exercise has on your belly fat and love handles. Commit to a lower-calorie diet. A pound of fat equals 3, 500 calories, so when your body burns that much off and doesn't replace it with more, you lose weight. Create the deficit with your exercise and increase it by choosing smaller portions of whole, unprocessed food. Cutting out soda drinks, pastries, burgers is one way to quickly eliminate unnecessary calories fast. Also, refusing refined grains -- such as in white bread, pasta, pizza and baked goods -- and avoiding foods high in saturated and trans fats helps you trim calories and shrink belly fat. Choose white fish, egg whites, skinless chicken and beans, dals, low fat paneer and sprouts as examples of lean protein. Fill up on fibrous, watery vegetables; cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, peppers, green beans, pumpkin and cabbage. A small serving of whole grain roti or unpolished rice -- about 1/2 to 1 cup of rice or 1 roti -- rounds out your meals. If you find yourself hungry between meals, resist the chips, snack mixes and energy bars. Go instead for a piece of fresh fruit, some nuts or plain yogurt. Quit smoking and reduce stress to help you target belly fat and love handles for loss. Stress can cause you to make poor food choices, overeat and release a hormone called cortisol, which makes your body more likely to put on fat in your midsection. Adequate sleep, more than five hours per night and less than nine, correlates with slimmer bellies. Drink about 2 liters of water per day. Try to eat small but frequent meals. Avoid long gaps in between meals. Drink a glass of lime water in the mornings to lush out your system & avoid bloating. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Include exercises that tone your back and abdominal muscles too. Lastly be committed. Remember it's a lifestyle change and not a one time thing. It's a balanced intake that will last you longer. All the so called fad diets and only doing singular ab exercises or ab machines alone will not give you targeted results. The fats will remain as it is. It's all about overall work out and balanced diet.

Hi ! Thanks for your query. Hair loss, now-a-days, is common among males and females of all age groups. We all lose some hair strands every day, however, some people lose more than normal strands in a day that can cause severe hair loss. Hair loss is mostly genetic, so if hair loss runs in your family, you are most likely to suffer from hair loss too. Hair loss happens either in clumps that is overall hair loss, or focussed on any one part of head - especially the crown. While genetics play a big role, some additional factors can aggravate hair loss - hormonal imbalance, stress, thyroid disease, anemia, protein deficiency, chemotherapy, and low vitamin levels may cause hair loss in you. Start by following a good diet - Eat adequate amount of protein. Your hair is made up mainly of proteins. Include skimmed milk, cottage cheese, lentils. Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin B are other important nutrients for great hair health. So include lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your daily diet.
