My little daughter (2 years 10 month old) dos not want to take any kind of food every time she want to take mother's milk, please give us some advice.

My little daughter (2 years 10 month old) dos not want to take any kind of food every time she want to take mother's ...
At this age, mother's milk does not provide any kind of nutrition. There is a thing called positive reinforcement - means giving reward every time she tries new food, may be small. Stop breast feeding, it is really not useful at this age. Please do not punish or use any kind of negative reinforcement for the child.

Involuntary Oral Habits That Are Eating Away Your Smile.

Involuntary Oral Habits That Are Eating Away Your Smile.

Clenching or night grinding.

If you have ever experienced a strong emotion of either anger or resolve you may realise our body tenses up and our teeth clench. If this is not a frequent occurrence the damage maybe minimal but as sports people or someone with a bad temper you may actually end up wearing down your teeth considerably. Now a large part of this habit is semi voluntary you can remind yourself to control it but a few people suffer from an entirely involuntary condition called night grinding or bruxism.

Unfortunately here you have no awareness of doing the grinding except maybe waking up with a sore jaw or a headache but the person sleeping beside you can even hear you gnashing your teeth. Needless to say the damage this is silent destroyer is causing is significant and rapid. The best solution if diagnosed with this habit is to start wearing a night guard which is a thin plastic appliance that fits snugly on your teeth similar to a sports guard so that it protects your teeth and wears down before your teeth do. Also the jaw separation it creates puts your muscles at ease and they don't get activated or clench anymore.

Mouth breathing.

Many people are unaware of this habit entirely. A very common condition mouth breathing occurs more so when you're sleeping and tend to breathe more through your mouth than your nose.

This condition can be a result of the way your nasal passages and throat are shaped. It commonly occurs in people with a deviated nasal septum as well. The main sign to know if you're mouth breathing or not is if you wake up with an extremely dry mouth, at times bad breathe and tend to have red irritated gums that bleed often on brushing.

Mouth breathing also predisposes you to snoring so if you haven't started yet if you're a mouth breather chances are you will start snoring as well.

It usually can be corrected surgically and if not severe snoring particularly can be corrected by oral appliances or oxygen machines which supplement the air reaching your lungs.

Tongue thrusting.

This habit develops at childhood or birth and is also attributed to the tongue shape and the structure of the palate and throat. A person having this habit tends to push the teeth out while swallowing as a result they present with spaced out teeth and a large tongue.

To prevent the need for braces catching this habit early on and wearing an appliance to control it would be best. If spaces have already increased then best form of closing the gaps would be either with braces or by cosmetic fillings.

Cheek biting.

A surprisingly unnoticeable habit people tend to chew their inner cheek or parts of their lip when under stress or deep thought. While this habit can seem harmless it can create a long term wound in the mouth which can either balloon up with fluids or be subject to infection. Chronic injuries or wounds should never be left unnoticed and habits like these should be discontinued to avoid discomfort and the eventual need for treatment.

Exposure to alternating extremes of temperature.

Another very ignorant but seemingly harmless habit is to eat a hot meal and down it with a glass of ice cold water or have a hot drink and second it with ice cream. While the effects of this habit may only show up in the long term what it does is create an impact on the enamel and slowly cause the teeth to become sensitive.

While our teeth are extremely hardy and don't breakdown until exposed to hundreds of millions of such daily stimuli, the best solution is to keep an intermittent time gap between the extremes of temperature in order not to shock the nerves that rest within your teeth to become hypersensitive.

My 2 years old daughter is not drinking milk we have to give her force fully. What can we do?

My 2 years old daughter is not drinking milk we have to give her force fully. What can we do?
No need to give milk forcefully. Every child has there own likes and dislikes. Instead of milk if she is taking milk products like curd cheese its ok. Even if not this then just ensure that she has a healthy diet. Milk is not essential. By giving her forcefully you are ensuring that she never takes milk in her life. So stop it.

My baby is 6 months old now! can I start giving her daily foods?

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician,
Frequency: after 6 months you need to start weaning foods apart from breastfeeding. For next one month: 1-2 times other foods (rest breast or formula feeding) from 7th month: 2-3 times other foods, increase to 4 from 8th month and 5 from 9th month. After that 6 times food, plus breastfeeding. As you can see you shouldn't stop breastfeeding, taper it down slowly. After one year day time food plus night breastfeeding. Type 1. You can start weaning foods like rice gruel or kheer or boiled apple and boiled vegetables or cereal, etc. Initially for one month give only once or twice a day. Rest should be breastfeeding and formula. 3. Exact quantity varies from baby to baby. Don't force feed every time. The moment he refuses to feed wait and try again after an hour or so. 4. Feed in calm and dark place to avoid distractions. 5. After 7 months gradually add home available foods (low salt low spice) like idli, khichdi, dal rice, etc in soft form (mashed with hands) 6. Add oil or ghee to each food item. 7. Avoid cow's milk till 1 year. Consistency almost liquid like till 7 months, semisolids from 8 months soft solids from 10 months egg yellow from 8 months, white from 1 year fruits and vegetables all types in plenty (at least two servings each per day) all vegetables can be boiled and given. Apple can be boiled while other fruits like banana papaya orange etc can be given without boiling.

You should not feel guilty and it is common for for many women to go for work. Yes you can express milk and give it. If you keep in fridge it should not be boiled but keep outside for one hour before giving it. Now is the time to introduce homemade semi solids as well, and feed when you come back.

What is the good food for 2 years old baby.

PGDMLS, DNB OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY, MRCOG PART1, MS OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
What is the good food for 2 years old baby.
2 year old baby can have all food which a normal adult eats, like home made roti/ chapatti, sabzi, daal rice, khichadi. You can make it more healthy by adding ghee, use sweeteners like honey/ jaggery/ dates rather than sugar in majority cases. They can have lapsi, sheera, upama, appam, poha, pancakes, dosas made up of mixed daals soaked overnight with added vegetables, eggs, malpohas, uttappas. If they dont like vegetables add it in daal/ khichadi/ dosas/ pancakes/ soups. Give milk once in a day at least, if not plain add bournvita/ horlicks according to their taste. Curd/ paneer is good for them if they dont have any allergy to milk products.

Sir, My 7 year old daughter is suffering from low level of thyroid. Her growth is not normal at this age. Mentally she is good but her physical growth is bad. Her nails also didn't growing from last more than 10 months. Kindly suggest me what to do.

MD - Homeopathy
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Hi, Mr. Lybrate-user, firstly if your daughter is a thyroid patient you should regularly check her tsh levels so we can analyse whether her thyroid status is normal or no if she is on medication. Because you require to adjust the dose of her medicines as per her tsh levels. Regarding diet you should increase her protein diet. Introduce sprouts, paneer, milkshakes, dates, jaggery in her diet. Lastly you also need to give her diet which is rich in calcium like ragi, almonds, milk and milk products. There are also very good yogas for thyroid patients, teach her it will benefit her and you can also start her on homoeopathic medicines which will give wonderful results.
