Do We Really Need Health Supplements?

Do We Really Need Health Supplements?

It is important for you to have a healthy and balanced body in order to perform your daily activities well. People often think health supplements are efficient alternatives to a healthy diet and regular physical exercise while most of the doctors and nutritionists believe that there is no need for any health supplement if you take in right quantity and quality of food and engage in regular exercise. While health supplements are not alternatives to a healthy lifestyle, they are somewhat necessary for everyday health in the hectic lifestyles of today.

Nowadays, stress (learn more about for Controlling Everyday STRESS) is a constant companion and the foods that we consume are often not of proper quality. You may think that you are taking foods full of nutrients but pesticides and chemicals used farming diminish the nutrient content from the crops. This creates a necessity for taking health supplements for the proper nourishment of body.People with certain medical conditions also need supplements. Supplements fill the gap in your diet.

Beneficial health supplements:

  1. Pregnant women and breastfeeding (leanr more about the Benefits of Breastfeeding) women need iron supplements. Folic acid can be supplemented in your diet in order to reduce the chances of birth defects.
  2. You can take in vitamin D supplements if they don't get enough sunlight every day. Adults, especially after the age of 40 need vitamin D and calcium supplements to maintain bone health.
  3. Adults above the age of 40 are also advised to take vitamin B-12 supplements.

Supplements have some side effects depending upon your health condition. If you take some supplements along with some other medicines or before surgeries, they can lead to serious complications. Research has concluded that some vitamin and minerals supplements particularly iron supplements, increase the risk of death. So it is necessary to have a proper examination of the body before you take health supplements. The risk factors include:

  1. Taking vitamin B6 regularly in excess of 100 mg may lead to damage of your nerves
  2. Taking 400 international units of vitamin E on a regular basis increases the health risk and may even lead to premature death
  3. Taking multivitamins does not supplement poor eating habits.

Hello, In a female with a normal menstrual cycle of 28days, the ovulation would take place on 14th day of the cycle. So, 3-4 days before and after this 14th day is supposed to be the period (mid-cycle) when the chances of getting pregnant are high! And rest of the days are safe when the chances of getting pregnant are less or remote. What is the normal menstrual cycle in her case? And is this happening for the first time? So, get her pregnancy test done. Ideal time for pregnancy test to be done is 1 week after the expected date of next date of menses. Share the report with me for proper guidance.

First doubt is always of pregnancy, however there are other hormonal reasons also. Best is to meet gynaecologist as history, examination and reports are required to diagnose and advise.

Solution is simple. We need to test both husband and wife and diagnose the cause of this problem. Then we need to give drugs for that cause.

She's been married over an year but they are not able to have sex. Penetration is very difficult. Kindly advise.

Diploma in Family Medicine, Fellowship in Diabetology, Diploma in Diabetology, FCCP, MBBS
General Physician,
1. For penis penetration difficulty you see a doctor a do a detail examination whether vaginal passage is normal or not. 2. The tissue in front of vagina (hymen) sometimes would have not teared after penetration (usually tears in the first intercourse) -- little loose or tight. Kindly consult a lady doctor near by.

What should be remedy for rashes and itching near vagina (on genital part also) after shaving?

Diploma in Anesthesia, MBBS
General Physician, Hyderabad
If you are using blade/razor for shaving change the brand. apply soap to the vaginal area and workout foam and then shave so that there wont be any peeling of the superficial surface of the skin on the vagina. if you are using annefrench/veet cream etc., then that is not agreeing with your skin so change the brand and see if the vaginal areas still itches then do not use any of the cream and use razor/blade as suggested above. Do not apply any antiseptic lotion after shaving. If you are interested you clean the vaginal area with soap and water and dry the area. if you are worried about the cuts on the vagina while shaving, then just trim the hair as close to the skin as possible with scissors. come back for further clarification. good luck
