Schizophrenia is a lifelong disease and the treatment is good for her and must be continuously monitored by the doctor. However, I advise you to take her for therapy as well to provide her with skills and techniques to understand her condition and the measures she can take to have a relatively fulfilling life. This combination will help her tremendously but do not expect great changes. It will be a gradual process but somewhat rewarding. I commend you for having lived with her and helped her this far. The journey is, however, not complete and you will need to give her all he support until the end. If you have other people at home, they could all help too. If you notice any unusual symptoms, immediately inform the doctor. I wish you had started therapy a long time ago. Anyway do seek this help from a professional comp[etent to handle psychotic disorders like schizophrenia.

I am suffering from anxiety and stress since last five years how to cope up with them.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I am suffering from anxiety and stress since last five years how to cope up with them.
Anxiety has all to do with fear and your inability (or so you would tend to think) to handle the same. Fear is based on looking too much into the future and imagining things that usually do not tend to happen (usually 90% of your fears will not happen). You need to change your perception of the fearful stimulus then you can change your response to the fear. The first one is the best and will preempt the need for the second. If you are already far gone into the reaction mode, then you need both responses to counter the attack. The way we see things in life (like half empty or half full glass) is very dependent on our attitude. Attitude may have developed over many years but fortunately can change in a matter of sustained choices made and acted up on now. Accordingly you choose to see things as either threatening or as an opportunity. The opportunist will be positive and work with the situation to make good out of it. The individual who sees it as threatening, will, out of fear, try to avoid/run away from the situation or react with anxiety. Yes, self-belief does impact it too, but you can see that prior to that, perception will tarnish the belief system too. Here, you can see that all the resolution lies in just changing your perception/attitude, even if it is against odds. Changing your response, despite the perception, is building up of your reserves and resources to handle any contingency that life throws up at you. And life throws up situations quite regularly and heavily. For this you need to develop a fit mind and body: The former, by meditation and mind exercises; and the later, by exercises and proper diet. You need good sleep too. Included in the development of the mind is the handling of emotions, in your case, fear. These changes will give you a handle on life and your perceptions and responses. Prayer is really powerful, if you are a spiritual person. Repeat some personally framed affirmations that are geared to calming you down and building confidence. Do a personality course too. Anything that develops you personally will be of great assistance in building resilience.

Dear Rajender, Most of the allopathy doctors know interaction with other allopathic medicines. They know very few interaction with herbs. So far i have not come across any study with the herb garcinia cambodia. You can ask the doctor who prescribed the herb, she/he might have some knowledge. But, there are good treatment available in allopathy itself to reduce weight. 1. Shift her to weight neutral medicines. 2. Life style modification with dietician. 3. Metformin or Topiramate. Please discuss with AIIMS doctors for these treatments.

I have been smoking weed (marijuana) from last 2 years, what are the effects of smoking weed? Can I stop smoking? How?

Masters in Clinical Psychology
Psychologist, Lucknow
These are the following effects of smoking weed: SHORT-TERM EFFECTS Sensory distortion Panic Anxiety Poor coordination of movement Lowered reaction time After an initial “up,” the user feels sleepy or depressed Increased heartbeat (and risk of heart attack) LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF MARIJUANA Reduced resistance to common illnesses (colds, bronchitis, etc.) Suppression of the immune system Growth disorders Increase of abnormally structured cells in the body Reduction of male sex hormones Rapid destruction of lung fibers and lesions (injuries) to the brain could be permanent Reduced sexual capacity Study difficulties: reduced ability to learn and retain information Apathy, drowsiness, lack of motivation Personality and mood changes If you want to get off weed, the first step is deciding to do so. Then take a few steps in the right direction. Change your habits. If you hang around with friends who smoke weed, find other people to do things with who aren’t using it. Build yourself up nutritionally. This will help with the withdrawal symptoms. Drugs rob the body of vitamins and minerals, particularly B complex, vitamin C and calcium and magnesium. Find some activities you like to do, maybe something you enjoyed before you started using. Get out and see the world you’ve been missing in the drug induced haze. There are withdrawal symptoms when a person stops smoking marijuana. Since they are not as dramatic as heroin withdrawal symptoms, some people think they do not exist. Some people experience irritability, sleeping difficulties, depression, night sweats and loss of appetite. Some also suffer anxiety and fatigue. Some people can overcome these symptoms and get through it on their own. Some can’t and need help. Even if they get off the drug for awhile, they go back to it as they are still faced with the same problems and difficulties that led them to using it in the first place. Seek professional help.

Dear good question you asked. Many people has the same type of questions. I am afraid, I should not help you here. Mainly because, your doctor knows your conditions better than me. He has given you the medicine and you should approach him if you want to change anything. You can also approach another psychiatrist near you. Advising you here without knowing you fully, will be a sin. Please pardon me. God bless you. Take care.

I am 23 year old female and I have too much of negativity on me please advice me.
Positive attitude from what you have written, it appears that you have no physical ailment and it is more to do with your state of mind. 1. Develop positive attitude and make friends with positive thinking people. 2. Every person is unique and nobody is perfect 3. Focus on your positive qualities and feel proud of your achievements 4 don't keep doubting yourself. 5. Keep busy with your work and studies; maintain your schedule 6. Avoid fast food and eat healthy food. 7. Regular vigorous physical exercise is very important. With improved blood circulation, toxins will be eliminated from your body. You will become very energetic and your mind will become fresh as well as positive. 8. Maintain healthy habits and have adequate sleep 9 keep helping others without any expectation and it gives immense satisfaction 10. If you still want some medicine, take alfalfa mother tincture 5 to 10 drops in half glass of water twice daily. This will be available in homoeopathic medical shop.

I have recently got engaged. I feel she is very shy and me too blunt. What should I do to make her feel comfortable?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Just stop being blunt. Don?t marry your fiance to change her. Accept her as she is and if it is good for her (not you) you can help her to change. First though, you need to make her comfortable with you. That can happen, if you help her by being kind, gentle, loving, respectful, trustworthy, and always giving. She will withdraw more into her shell with your bluntness. When she improves herself around you, she will find it a lot easier with other people particularly when you are with her. Gradually she will grow out of this shyness and live comfortably. If yours is an arranged marriage, surely she will feel shy initially depending on your backgrounds, education, socio-economic class, caste, community etc. Give her time and be very lovingly patient.

Normally we can say yes, but I don't know the exact reason of your anxieties. Sun is the natural source of vitamin d and sun is the source of positivity too. If you have deficiency of vitamin d that means you exposer in sun is very less. With the medicines start to sit in sun light in morning for 10-20 min. Lesser clothes on body and cover your eyes. Of you can start to go for a walk in morning when sun rises. It will help you. If you want to take any other help you can contact us.

Sir how to concentrate on study. I am preparing for exam can't concentrate too much. I am not addictive to any kind of addiction like smoking drinking etc. I am losing interest in study I don't know why this is happening. I was an average student but now I am getting worser. My question is 1.What should I do to overcome this problem. 2.Is there medicine required for concentration?

PhD - Health Psychology
Psychologist, Delhi
There is no medication for increasing concentration. So don't enter into any medication or pill. Yes, you can increase concentration by meditation, OM chanting, yoga; and also any physical activity, like sports, or even walking. Also, please love whatever you are doing. You are losing interest because you are studying forcefully without loving your study. Try and love your work. Don't treat it as a burden, start enjoying it. Concentration will improve drastically.

Respected Sir, Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a perfectly treatable condition and I would ask you to relax and make sure you see a psychiatrist who can give you the necessary help. If you have already tried any form of pschotherapy and it has not been successful, there are still medicines that you can take which will help you with your problem. It will take 3-6 months, but it is perfectly treatable and I am sure that the associated depression would also clear once the underlying disorder is treated. The psychotherapy of choice would be Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but with your associated depressive symptoms, I would suggest that you might need medicines which can only be prescribed by a psychiatrist. I am aware of various psychiatrists based in jalandhar whom you contact for the same or it can be done online but not via this platform as the rules of answering open questions explicitly state that I am not allowed to prescribe any medicines.

Supriya, I can understand your worries regarding your mother's illness. Schizophrenia is a chronic illness however with medication it is possible to keep the symptoms under control and lead a normal life. It is essential you bring your mother for a consultation so that appropriate medication can be started for her, or her medication adjusted if she isn't responding to the current one.

I'm 21 year old female. I were chain smoker from last 6 years which usually helped me with my anxious nature and now I have left smoking. Its been more than one week and I have a severe headache since last 4 days. I am unable to prevent anxiety and also lacks in anger management. I'm not very social person. All this is leading to worsen my personal relations with everyone including my parents. I myself am a psychology student to after some research I have been taking nexito as a anti anxiety and sometimes zolfresh to sleep. What else do you suggest? Also.

Congrats for quitting the intoxicating habit of smoking. Never again fall victim to this habit of smoking which can spoil your life fully. Pl do not self-medicate without asking an expert. It is normal to experience withdrawal symptoms after quitting smoking but the bright side is greater than the withdrawal symptoms. With time, you would feel fresh, purer as the withdrawal symptoms dimish.
