10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings. My dad expired last year in a road accident. It was impossible to bear with the loss but I am controlling myself. But...
Dear lybrate user, I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Losing your dad at this age and in a road accident must have been very traumatic for you. You and your mother are going through a very difficult phase in your life. Your dad's tragic and sudden death has affected you both, but in different ways. There is loss support and sudden increase in the responsibilities for you both. This might be causing a huge burden on you both and you might be feeling insecure and lost. At this difficult time when you are emotionally stressed out, it will be difficult for you to live life normally. You may need some more time to come out of this grief. It is advisable to share your sad feelings with each other and/or with your respective friends and relatives. You both need to talk about your pain with someone. It will relieve you of some pain and sadness. I hope your mother is on medication for bp. I would suggest that you both take an appointment with a counsellor, who will help you in this difficult situation so that eventually you both can move on with life. Take care.

You want to be lonely because you are not interested in the usual things happening around you. You are feeling sad. Because of your family issues you are probably feeling angry, frustrated and stuck as well. And may be you are not able to express these feelings. All this is putting a lot of pressure on you. As you have not been expressing your anger in proper way and time, it is coming out any time, with slightest provocation. You need to talk to someone about your problem. Talk to your trusted friend or a trusted relative. Your friends or relatives will help you in taking a rational decision in this difficult situation. It is difficult for you to take rational decision when you are overwhelmed with emotions. If you do not have any trusted friend or relative, then please consult a counsellor, who will help you in exploring various options and will also help in taking rational decision and coping up.

Having Suicidal Thoughts? These Tips Might Help!

MBBS, M.D Psychiatry , Diploma in Psychological Medicine

Having Suicidal Thoughts? These Tips Might Help!

Although there is no single reason why someone may have suicidal tendencies, certain things can increase the risk. An individual is more likely to have suicidal thoughts if he has a mental health condition like depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. The vulnerability also increases in cases of alcoholism, drug abuse or poor job security. It may not be possible to prevent suicidal thoughts, but keeping one's mind healthy with regular exercise, healthy eating and maintaining friendships can help one deal better with stress.

It can be very upsetting, when someone says things which sound as if the person is considering suicide. One may not be sure what to do to help, as to whether one should take talk of suicide seriously or if intervention might make the situation worse. Taking action is always the best choice. One of the best things one can do if someone is feeling suicidal is to encourage them to talk about their feelings and to listen to what they say. One can provide the best help by listening and not being judgemental. If the person has been diagnosed with a mental health condition like depression, one can take advice from his care team.

One should avoid offering solutions. While listening, do not give in to the temptation of providing a solution. One should ask open ended questions so that the person remains in control and expresses his feelings. On the contrary, it will offer an opportunity to talk about feelings, which may reduce the risk of acting on suicidal feelings. Ensure that the person is not left on his own, if there is immediate danger. One cannot always tell when a loved one or friend is considering suicide, so one must be on the lookout for warning signs. The warning signs could be talking about suicide, buying or stocking pills, withdrawing from social life, increase in alcohol or drugs, personality changes like severely agitated and saying goodbye to people as if seeing them for the last time. It is also important that one does not make judgements about how a person is thinking or behaving.

After listening to their feelings, one may feel that certain aspects of their thinking and behaviour are making their problems worse. But pointing this out will not be particularly helpful to them. Reassurance, respect and support will only help someone during these difficult periods. As a final note, one must realise that talking to someone about their feelings is not long lasting and can help them feel safe and secure temporarily. A professional help can provide the long-term support to help someone overcome their suicidal tendencies. That will the person to deal with the primary issues behind someone's suicidal thoughts, besides offering advice and support. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist.

Organic brain syndrome (OBS),

also known as organic brain disease (OBD) Organic mental disorders organic brain disorder, is an older and nearly obsolete general term from psychiatry, referring to many physical disorders that cause impaired mental function. It does not include psychiatric disorders. Originally, the term was created to distinguish physical (termed "organic") causes of mental impairment from psychiatric (termed "functional") disorders.

Acute organic brain syndrome is (by definition) a recently appearing state of mental impairment, as a result of intoxication, drug overdose, infection, pain, and many other physical problems affecting mental status. In medical contexts, "acute" means "of recent onset. As is the case with most acute disease problems, acute organic brain syndrome is often temporary?however this is not guaranteed (a recent-onset problem may continue to be chronic or long term). A more specific medical term for the acute subset of organic brain syndromes is delirium
Chronic organic brain syndrome is long-term. For example, some forms of chronic drug or alcohol dependence can cause organic brain syndrome due to their long-lasting or permanent toxic effects on brain function.[3] Other common causes of chronic organic brain syndrome sometimes listed are the various types of dementia, which result from permanent brain damage due to strokes, Alzheimer's disease, or other damaging causes which are not reversible.

Though OBS was once a common diagnosis in the elderly, until the understanding of the various types of dementias it is related to a disease process and is not an inevitable part of aging. In some of the older literature, there was an attempt to separate organic brain syndrome from dementia, but this was related to an older world view in which dementia was thought to be a part of normal aging, and thus did not represent a special disease process. The later identification of various dementias as clear pathologies is an example of the types of pathological problems discovered to be associated with mental states, and is one of the areas which led to abandonment of all further attempts to clearly define and use OBS as a term.

Associated conditions
Disorders that cause injury or damage to the brain and contribute to OBS include, but are not limited to:

Alzheimer's Disease
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Fetal alcohol syndrome
Parkinson's disease
Intoxication/overdose caused by drug abuse including alcoholism
Sedative hypnotic dependence and drug abuse[3]
Intracranial hemorrhage/trauma
Korsakoff Syndrome
Psychoorganic syndrome
Stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA)
Withdrawal from drugs, especially sedative hypnotics, e.G. Alcohol or benzodiazepines
Other conditions that may be related to organic brain syndrome include: clinical depression, neuroses, and psychoses, which may occur simultaneously with the OBS.

Symptoms of OBS vary with the disease that is responsible. However, the more common symptoms of OBS are confusion; impairment of memory, judgment, and intellectual function; and agitation. Often these symptoms are attributed to psychiatric illness, which causes a difficulty in diagnosis.

Treatment of OBS varies with the causative disorder or disease. It is important to note that it is not a primary diagnosis and a cause needs to be sought out and treated.

How to prevent my stress? And how to growth my body? Daily routine main kya kare? Kya food khaye?

Homeopath, Raebareli
How to prevent my stress? And how to growth my body? Daily routine main kya kare? Kya food khaye?
You can enrich your life by adding these habits to your life - 1. Exercise regularly - starting a regular exercise regimen can help you in getting fit. Apart from the physical benefits, exercise helps release endorphins in the body which are also known as the feel-good hormone as they make you happier. 2. Eat a healthy breakfast - the breakfast is the first meal of the day, so eating a nutritious breakfast that contains a healthy balance of carbohydrates, protein and fiber will keep you satiated and provide energy. Eating breakfast also helps to curb binge eating which may promote weight gain. 3. Stop smoking - smoking can cause damage to the cardiovascular system in the body which can lead to increased chances of blood pressure problems. 4. Take the stairs - using the stairs instead of the elevator burns more calories and also increases your aerobic fitness. 5. Avoid the phone before bedtime - if you use your phone before you go to sleep, then it can harm your quality of sleep. The light of the phone screen contains certain wavelengths which disrupt the hormone melatonin that is responsible for regulating sleep. 6. Meditate regularly - meditating on a regular basis reduces stress, enhances your concentration and promotes overall wellbeing. 7. Avoid processed foods - eating natural foods such as fruits and vegetables reduces chances of gaining weight and getting affected by disorders of the digestive system. It also helps in improving the health of your skin.

I have a friend. We both are very close to each other and share every secret. He has one elder brother, aged 31, working in a call center and one younger sister, completed her engineering searching for jobs. My friend is pursuing CA. His father is working in Railways and mother is a teacher. His parents have completed more than 32 years of marriage. Issue is his father at present is a earning more than 1lakh per month but he is not spending a single penny in the family or on himself. From the day they had got married. His salary comes to his account but within 1or 2 days he himself encash the whole amount by cheque and does not disclose where that amount is. When his mother ask to him regarding his salary for housing and other expenses his father tells salary has not came yet or I have sent those money to his sister or brother or sometimes to my friend. His father always lies to all the family members. They don't have a proper house to live. His mother is very much concerned about childrens wedding. What ever she is earning gets spend. She is not having any savings because of this. He and his siblings are staying away from home. His father has also got posted in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Mother is staying in Patna alone. His father very often comes to Patna on weekend for Saturday or Sunday. Sometimes only for Sunday. Sometimes not at all. He is facing problems in his studies as the passing percentage is very low in the institute and his father keeps on telling him to fill the forms for Government Jobs but does not give him a single penny for anything. He gets only Rs. 5000 from his mother. Which is very hard to manage in a city like Delhi. He was telling he is very much disturbed regarding his family and his studies. Because of this he is facing failure from past 3 years and has got very much depressed. He is having tension all the time in his mind this has caused baldness for him. Please suggest how to handle the situation as his age is about 30 years old and still no job and he has not yet married. He is very much disturbed for lot of reasons. I feel very bad for him facing such issues. Please help!

It is very nice of you to care for your friend. As you are very close to your friend it is natural for you to feel bad for him. From what you have written it is apparent that your friend will not be able to change his father's behaviour. Also unless his parents are willing and open he or anyone else won't be able to do much about them. It is also clear that his mother has single handedly cared for her children and earned and raised them. This may sound harsh. I am very surprised that at about 30 years your friend is still depending on his mother and father financially. Not only that he blaming his father for not supporting him financially. Your friend should grow up and take charge of his life. Instead of feeling helpless or blaming either circumstances or his father for his destiny- he should invest his energy into. Completing his study, getting good grades and find a job. I. Am glad he is not married yet. He should not think about marriage until he is able to support himself. As a good friend I think you could take this opportunity to make your friend understand his own responsibility towards his life. He seems to be an intelligent person who if focus in his study would be easily able to pass and also secure a good job. I think you need to help him change his focus from blaming and expecting things from his father to taking charge of his own life. If you think he needs any specific advice then please feel free to book an audio consultation with me. It is truly painful to see such a talented young man not able to utilize his full potential. If need be he could speak to a counselor or psychologist for 2 to 3 months on a weekly basis. I do help you understand what I am saying regarding your friend taking charge of his life. Wishing you both very best.

How to increase my brain grasping power. So that what ever I read I can easily remember for my exams? Please doctor tell me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.
