Dear Lybrate user. In many of the cases Stammering has two important reasons. Vocal chord misalignment or other problems are the primary reason. For this vocal chord complaint, you should consult an ENT specialist and get it corrected. Second reason is purely psychological. Stammer therapy can help you in psychological reasons. Take care.

When I have to speak in front of people I stutter/stammer. I feel difficulty to speak even my name. But when I have to speak to my friends or family I speak fluently or stammer only few times. What should I do. Please help me out.

The situations you are comfortable with in those situations stammering will not happen that's why you don't face problem while talking to your friends or family. But the problem starts when you have to talk to strangers. You lag confidence there. Go for speech therapy from a trained speech pathologist.

Hello lybrate user, I believe every person who stutters is slightly different. From the top, we would all look same but if you dive deeper you would know everyone is different with respect to syllables on which they stutter, frequency, places they might stutter, may stutter while talking to specific people etc. So you need to analyse your stuttering with respect to above points so you can work to reduce it with greater efficiency. Here are the things which is useful: 1. Breathing: this has been already stressed enough by other people. Notice your breathing pattern when you stammer. You will notice that you breath shallow while stammering and try to complete sentence as soon as possible which leads to more stuttering. Taking control of your breathing can do wonders. Breath deep and talk slowly. 2. Substitution: when you make note of syllables/words on which you stammer, you can substitute those with their synonyms on which you don't stutter. Another trick is inserting things like'umm'you know'i feel' etc when you feel that you are about to stammer. 3. Mirror technique: this helped me a lot. Shut the door, stand alone in front of a mirror, start reading any small article/chapter loudly for around 20 mins from a magazine/ newspaper which you haven't read before. When you are done with reading that, look in the mirror and try to talk about it loudly. Try it for 30 days and see if you can feel the difference. 4. Acceptance: accept the fact that there are millions like you. Don't try to hide it or run away from it. Accept it as a part of you and try to live with it. Thank you. Try to consult any speech therapist too.

You require speech therapy sessions where your therapist is going to evaluate your stammering level and type, etc. Based on that he will make therapy plan and will start your sessions. It takes a long time to get treated. Some of the tips may help you initially: - deep inhale before speaking. - control speech rate (speed of speech) - while speaking, whenever you realize you are going to stammer, stop there, deep inhale, and start in fulency. - be confident.

My problem is my throat loudly speaking in my voice breaking and sour throat and shivering my voice. please solution ...
You are misusing your voice. As a result your voice has become harsh. First and foremost you need to stop shouting completely. Take complete voice rest for 2 days. That means no talking for 2 days, not even whisper. And then get back to speech therapist for further exercises

Nowadays my vocabulary sound is not good. It's very tough for others to understand . Mostly 'S' sound is coming while talking. What to do for this ? How can I change.

General Physician, Nashik
Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

Please help me. Suggest me any time of treatment or surgery regarding speaking problem.

Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

I have speaking problem due to fat tongue. I fumble while speaking. So I am not able to speak clearly. What is the solution? Due to that problem my confidence is at 0%. Please help me with the solution.

It is a wrong assumption that the tongue is fat and you can do speech therapy and see a plastic surgeon if needed. Confidence can be rebuilt by mind training.
