I have tongue tie. I cannot speak faster in public conversation. I have to apply lot of pressure in my tongue. I want to know whether tongue tie release will help me in my speech? How much it is effective?

Masters In Speech Pathology & Audiology
Speech Therapist, Gurgaon
Hi lybrate-user. If the tongue tie is partial and you can articulate sounds like t and d correct then generally a surgery is not advised. Its better to get tongue tie removed in childhood as speech sounds are developed normally without help. Anyways if you are not comfortable then go to ent surgeon.

Dear , your problem is called stammering or stuttering. The stammering is of physiological and psychological types, please see an ent specialist and let him ascertain if there is any problem with your vocal chords. In case it is not, you may approach a psychologist for stammering therapy. Take care.

My throat is not well as I have passion of singing light n semi classical vocal. I am in age of 62 years. I wish to have advise for a medicine to get cure of laryng.

ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Hi The vocal cords get injured with singing and prolonged speaking. Especially since aging makes them dry and weak. You need to follow something known as voice hygiene which includes drinking sips of warm water every 30 minutes along with giving voice rest for 10-15 minutes every hour. Voice must not be excessively raised or lowered and whispering must be avoided. Medicines help only when there is laryngitis. See an ent specialist for a detailed assessment and advice.

My 3 years old daughter doesn't speak much. She says words to explain what she wants but she doesn't talk fluently. She is good with her motor skill, body balance. She even tries to trick me. I'm a single parent. My ex husband was violent with me in front of my daughter till she was around 2 years old. Is it possible that violence that my daughter has witnessed has effected her growth or language skill in someway. Also I work long hours each day, I hardly give my daughter 3-4 hrs a day. She is mostly with her maid. Should I seek some psychological treatment for my daughter?

Yes, the divorce and all the violence she has witnessed will have a bearing on this child. Being a girl child, she will also miss her father quite a bit now, and more later. It does not help that you don?t have much time to give her too. These years are most important to her and any way you can spend more time with her will diminish the total impact to a reasonable level, at least. Believe me, this is an investment with good dividends: otherwise you are looking at paying a great price for her and yourself, later. At this age she must talk incessantly, so this break up is certainly impacting her. She is angry and probably very sad. Divorce is always bad for the adults and worse for the kids. You have a responsibility to help her tide over the effects of this huge void in her life. You cannot obviously be father and mother to her, so a male figure around her will somewhat compensate this loss. You could go to a child psychologist both for assessment and some therapy. Don?t try to delay helping her on any front because it is easier to set things right as a preventive measure than as a curative one. She is already in a disturbed state but further negligence will lead to serious situations that at a later time even curative efforts may only nudge the issues and make it very difficult to do real justice.

Direct. When the remedy matches the symptoms, Nux moschata has the ability to treat symptoms of allergy, Alzheimer’ disease, colic, confusion and forgetfulness, dryness of mouth and constipation, narcolepsy, Petit mal, fainting, and vertigo.

I had speech problem when I was a student of class is almost 15 years. Now I am 28. It cured almost 70 percent. But 30 percent is remain. When I am taking in front of many people or giving lectures. Or in front of examine. I became nervous n fumbled. I am quite disappointed. N depressed. How to over come it? I couldn't clear any interview becoz of that. please help me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

All this is because of a nervous disposition i.e. there is some deep-rooted fear behind the speech impediment. That you have resolved 70% of the problem is very welcome and really good. Now if you met with a counselor or speech therapist and deal with your fear, I am sure you will resolve the 30% too. There are some more exercises to be done along with the therapy for handling emotions that will help tremendously. You could also register with the Toastmasters' Club in your city and further improve your public speaking skills.

I am 21 years old male. I am suffering from stammering. This hurt me too much when I sit in friends group, talk to a person. Kindly tell me sir what should I do.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You have a problem with fear. The fear has to do with people and more so if they are people in authority. If you deal with that fear, then a lot of your stammering will stop. Talk to a counselor and sort that out. There will still be a residue affect left because of pure habit. This can be resolved by some exercises, which should begin with real earnest right away. Practice speaking aloud in a closed room, but this time, choose words for which your stammer is most. Also practice singing sentences but ending the last word as a statement that is read. Next time end with two words stated, then three words etc. The lip exercise: with tight pressure press and roll the tip of your tongue against the edge of your lips, clockwise first and then anticlockwise, as many times as you possibly can. Purse your lips into an ‘O’ and withdraw it back stretching it like when you say an ‘E’, several times a day. Drop your lower jaw and flip it left to right and right to left, as many times as you can to loosen it. Practice making a resonating sound by increasing and decreasing the volume within the same breath. Sing the vowels A, E, I, O, U stretching each vowel as much as you can.
