What is diabetic retinopathy, I am getting some different sensation on my left foot, this occurs after sitting on the floor and or after getting up from a chair. Is there is any exercise to minimize this effect or natural/Ayurveda remedies.

Mr. lybrate-user, Diabetic retinopathy is one of the fairly often seen long term complication of diabetes mellitus. In this microvasculature of retina (small blood vessels supplying the retina) are affected due to excess glucose in the blood. These vessels get blocked, casing hypoxia (lack of oxygen) to retina due to this there will be new blood vessels formed on the retina. These vessels are fragile, they break causing bleeding in front of retina and behind vitreous. This can lead to blindness. Plus those vessels shrivel and pull the retina from its hold causing retinal detachment which also causes blindness. Strict blood glucose control and timely treatment is helpful. Diabetes also affects peripheral nerves, which can result in altered sensation in the feet like tingling, numbness and even burning sensation. Therefore, it is essential to achieve a strict blood glucose control. Thanks.

1. Banana and Milk Bananas are full of calories and contain high amount of carbohydrates and potassium that give you instant energy. Whosoever want to gain weight must eat a banana daily in the morning with a glass of warm milk. Add a teaspoon of sugar in it. Moreover, you can also have it after your meals. 2. Peanut Butter Peanut butter is a yummy spread for toast and bread. If you’re trying to gain weight, feel free to go for this high-calorie and nutritious food. Apply it on your whole wheat bread for breakfast and see how your weight increases within a short period of time. Besides, you can spread a spoonful of peanut butter on fruits or vegetables like banana, apple slices, fresh berries, wheat germ or applesauce. Alternatively, a peanut butter sandwich is also a good choice. 3. Nuts f you are fond of eating crunchy snacks like peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts, raisins and figs, they will definitely help you gain weight. They are full of fats, fibers, vitamins and minerals, and also contain essential oils which enable a thin person to put on some kilos. Chomp on a handful of nuts every day to increase your body weight. Add 3 almonds, 2 dates and 1 dried fig to a glass of milk and boil it. Drink this for a month to witness a significant amount of weight gain. Alternatively, soak 6 dried figs and about 30 grams of raisins in water overnight. Eat them in two parts. 4.Afternoon Nap Midday sleep plays a crucial role in gaining weight. Take a nap of about 45 minutes to 1 hour, post afternoon meal or lunch. 5.Clarified Butter (Ghee) and Sugar Mix clarified butter and sugar in equal proportion (around 1 tbsp of each). Eat this mix at least 30 minutes before your meal on an empty stomach. Consume it for one month. You will definitely see dramatic results. 6.Beans Beans are rich sources of fiber, protein and carbohydrates. These are one of the best calorie-dense foods that helps put on weight. Beans can be eaten as a snack or can be included in breakfast, lunch or dinner. There are several varieties of beans like red beans, black beans, soy beans, lima beans, lentils, and kidney beans. Alternatively, you can also prepare bean soup or bean salad. For quick results, eat them daily for one or two months. 7.Eggs Eggs contain a good amount of fat, calories, and protein which are popular ingredients for weight gain. Consuming egg whites everyday can give you strong muscles and essential protein and energy. For better results, eat more of the egg white than the yolk, as the former increases your cholesterol level. Alternatively, you can also eat egg-white omelettes or scrambled egg whites daily in breakfast.

How Eating Disorders Affect Pregnancy?

FIMSA, FICOG, MNAMS (Obstetrtics & Gynaecology) , MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
How Eating Disorders Affect Pregnancy?

There are three main types of eating disorders. These are bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa and binge eating. Anorexia nervosa is an exaggerated fear of gaining weight all the way to the point when the patient becomes abnormally thin. Bulimia nervosa is eating too much and then vomiting it out on a regular basis. Binge eating is when an individual eats an excessive amount of food in one go. All three types of eating disorders have adverse effects on pregnancy.

Here is how eating disorders affect pregnancies:

1. Unplanned pregnancies: Women with eating disorders are much more likely to have an unplanned pregnancy. This is true both for women who had eating disorders in the past as well as women who have eating disorders at the moment. In a study by University College London and King's College London consisting of 11000 women showed, only 28% of women reported that they had an unplanned pregnancy without suffering from any eating disorder as compared to the 41% who did have an eating disorder at some point in their life. The reason for this is that women tend to think that they do not need contraceptives due to an irregular menstrual cycle, which is one of the consequences of eating disorders during pregnancy.

2. Happiness about their pregnancy: The same survey of 11000 women conducted by University College London and King's College London reported that 71% of women were happy about their pregnancies. However, the number would have been a lot higher if there were fewer women with eating disorders. It has been said that 10% of women were unhappy to discover they were pregnant, if they had an eating disorder in the past as compared to 4% who never had an eating disorder.

3. Consider pregnancy a 'personal sacrifice': It has also been said that women who have had or have eating disorders during or before their pregnancy tend to consider pregnancy as a 'personal sacrifice' much more often than women who have no history or eating disorders.

Even though mostly, eating disorders affect pregnant women mentally rather than physically, it is crucial that women try to fix this problem before their pregnancy so they actually can enjoy having a baby.

Dear lybrate-user, namaskar, this occurs due to disturbed blood circulation. An imbalance of blood (more) coming down to the part and blood (less) returning back from there. You must do contrast bath, two times a day. Take two buckets full of hot and cold (ice in it) water. Put both the feet (up to calves) first in hot for one minute (move the toes and ankles actively) and then in cold for one minute (move the parts actively). To be done for about 15-20 minutes. After few minutes when hot water becomes cold. Add boiling water to make it hot again and add ice to the other bucket (more the difference in temp. Better is the result). After it is done. Massage the affected side from the foot down. Above (proximal) to the calf with mustard (or any oil) for 5 minutes. Wipe them and apply elastic bandages support 4" x 2 from toes to the calf. The elastic support is to be worn whole day and should be taken out only at night. Keep two pillows under the leg at night. Keep on doing the exercises (seek advice of a physio. Avoid keeping the foot hanging. If unavoidable. Keep on moving the toes actively up and down while sitting. The problem should settle in 4-6 weeks. Always wear the elastic support from waking to sleeping time and never allow the swelling to occur even for few minutes. Because the fluid causing the swelling makes home in the tissues of the affected part (foot and ankle. We have to get that home obliterated and collapsed by observing the advised discipline. Else it finds it's way again and the swelling persists for longer time. Take care. You can revert back to me after 10-15 days with the result of the advised ordeal. To be done religiously. Take care.

Dear lybrate user, increasing weight does not mean that you will go fatty. In fact, extra fat serves as a precursor of many diseases. In order to increase your weight as well as stay healthy you have to increase the muscle mass of your body. Normally a muscle undergoes an increase in size when it gets hypertrophied due to weight training. Weight-training leads to the pumping of blood to the muscle resulting in increased protein synthesis in the muscles. This applies to every muscles of human body. So, weight training is a must to increase weight. Whenever a muscle gets hypertrophied it demands protein to expand. Here comes the need of protein supplement. The most effective protein supplement is whey protein. But kindly remember only taking supplement is not enough. You need to take those supplements according to a fixed schedule. For quicker & better results take 40 grams of whey just after waking from sleep at morning. Take another 20 grams of whey just 30 minutes before workout. Again take 40 grams of whey just after you have finished your workout. Kindly remember gaining weight is a time -taking process. So do not expect any result within fortnight.
