Fungal Infection - 8 Things That Put You At Risk!

Fungal Infection - 8 Things That Put You At Risk!

Fungal skin diseases are brought about by various sorts of fungi and are the main reasons behind an irritated skin. Fungi attack and develop in dead keratin, a protein that makes up your skin, hair and nails. The various sorts of fungal diseases are caused by various groups of fungi. Some common fungal skin infections include ringworm, intertrigo, nail infections, Athlete’s foot, etc.

The likelihood of fungal infections increase in the following cases:

  1. If you are overweight
  2. Not drying your skin completely after a shower or wash
  3. Walking barefoot in shower and wet locations
  4. In case of a pregnancy
  5. If you have a weak immune system
  6. If you suffer from diabetes
  7. If you come into contact with a person or animal with fungal infections.
  8. Due to a recent course of antibiotics

Fungal rashes can at times be mistaken for other skin conditions, for example, psoriasis and eczema. Fungal skin diseases can bring about a number of skin rashes; some of them being red, textured and itchy. The organism can influence only one region, or a few zones of your body. In the event that you get a fungal disease of your scalp, you might lose some hair. There are steps which can be performed in order to protect yourself from getting a parasitic skin contamination:

  1. Dry your skin properly after a shower
  2. Try not to share hairbrushes, towels or combs since they might be carrying fungi
  3. In case a family member has been infected with scalp ringworm, hats, pillows, combs or scissors should be soaked using water and bleach
  4. Allow your shoes sufficient time to dry out by alternating them every two or three days
  5. In order to keep moisture away from the skin, wear loose clothes that are made of cotton or other breathable materials.
  6. Socks, bed linen and clothes should be washed regularly to prevent the growth of any fungi
  7. In communal and wet areas like saunas, swimming pools, showers, etc., wear clean plastic shoes or flip-flops.
  8. If you have diabetes, try to keep your blood sugar under control

Know Everything About Melasma

MBBS, Diploma in Venerology & Dermatology (DVD)

Know Everything About Melasma

A common skin condition, which causes the discoloration of your skin in patches across the face, melasma is more of a social embarrassment and cause for distress rather than being a serious condition. Although it affects men as well, studies have shown that over 90 percent of patients are women. It is also known as the mask of pregnancy as many pregnant women develop this skin condition.

Causes of Melasma

Primary causes of melasma have been attributed to various hormonal changes within the body. Let's look at some of the factors that may cause this disorder:

  1. Pregnancy: This is often attributed as the leading cause of melasma, the primary cause has often been attributed to hormonal changes that a woman may experience due to pregnancy.
  2. Treatments that may change hormonal balance: Women on contraceptive pills or who have implants such as intrauterine devices may also develop this disorder. This is due to the balance of estrogen and progesterone being changed within the body.
  3. Sun exposure: Continued sun exposure may also lead to melasma. This is due to the activation of melanocytes within the body which start producing more melanin.
  4. Stress: Long periods of stress on the body can also trigger hormonal changes and cause melasma.
  5. Thyroid problems: If someone suffers from Hypothyroidism or low levels of the thyroid hormone, it can trigger other hormonal changes and also cause this skin disorder.

It has also been noticed that people with generally a darker skin tone tend to get melasma and it is less common in people with fairer skin.

Certain characteristics of Melasma

Melasma develops in certain patterns which can be easily diagnosed either as spots on the skin similar to freckles or brown patches of skin that grow bigger. Some of these patterns are:

  1. Malar pattern: This grows on the nose and cheeks
  2. Mandibular pattern: Starts growing around the jaw line
  3. Brachial melasma: This grows on the upper arms and shoulders
  4. Lateral cheek pattern: Grows on the cheek on both sides of the face
  5. Centrofacial pattern: Nose, upper lips, forehead and cheeks

Treatment of Melasma

Most women who develop melasma during pregnancy report that it goes away after childbirth. However certain forms of melasma may appear in non-pregnant women due to hormonal changes. Treating the underlying hormonal changes usually, resolves the problem. However certain other methods may be required to resolve the issues such as skin creams, chemical peels, dermabrasion and microdermabrasion.

Mustard Oil for Hair

Mustard Oil for Hair

Mustard Oil for Hairs:-

If you know how to use Mustard Oil properly, this natural product can be a miracle for your hair. The oil is derived from the mustard seeds that are rich sources of vitamins (A, D, E, and K), calcium, magnesium,  minerals (zinc, selenium, and beta-carotene), and iron . Due to abundant presence of vitamin A, it stimulates hair growth. Mustard Oil does not allow fungal growth making it useful for avoiding scalp infections. The oil is considered to be highly beneficial in treating dry and damaged hair. This natural product is the perfect option to strengthen our hairs and reduce hair fall.

The following are ways you can apply mustard oil.

1. Normal way:-

Apply the oil a bit warm because it stimulates blood circulation. Massage it on scalp for 15 minutes. Leave it for 2 hours. Best is to leave it for overnight. The oil will go away in 2 shampoos.

2. Using with water:-

Make a mixture of mustard oil and water in equal proportion. Beat it like you are beating an egg while making cake. Or you can put the mixture in a bottle and shake it for some time. Apply it on your hairs and leave it for some hours. This is how I always apply to my hairs as it is less greasy and works better.

According to my knowledge, I can say that Mustard Oil works as a miracle for skin and hairs. So, do try it.

Always remember,

“Beauty is not flawless, It shines even through your flaws.”

No one is perfect, and no one is beautiful. It is only about how we thinking we are, if we think we are perfect and beautiful than we are perfect and beautiful.

take care :)

Hi lybrate-user, You could be suffering from male pattern balding. This is when you typically lose hair from the forehead area. It would be considered normal after the age of 40. It could be genetic, hence not much can be done for it. Biotin in the form of banana can be taken every day to prevent regular hair fall.

Hair Loss - Homeopathic Treatment for it!

Hair Loss - Homeopathic Treatment for it!

Loss of hair from the scalp, one of the most common problems plaguing the world today, can be caused by a variety of factors such as genetics, disorders and environmental factors. There are a number of homeopathic treatments that are used to treat hair loss. These treatments focus on the cause of the disease rather than just treating the symptoms.

Hair loss can be classified as

  1. Telogen effluvium: This is a disorder of the hair growth cycle where the telogen phase (where the hair falls out) becomes dominant.
  2. Alopecia aorta: This is an autoimmune disorder where the immune cells of the body destroy the hair. Hair loss tends to occur in patches.
  3. Androgenic alopecia: This type of disorder is caused by hormonal and genetic factors resulting in a receding hairline.

The various homeopathic treatments for hair loss are

  1. Silica: Silica is used to treat a number of diseases in homeopathy. Besides being an effective remedy for hair loss, it also treats symptoms of vitiligo, nail problems and eczema.
  2. Phosphorus: Phosphorus is another homeopathic treatment that is used to treat hair loss. It promotes hair growth in spots where hair loss has occurred.
  3. Kaliumcarbonicum: This treatment is used for brittle and thinning of hair, as it enhances hair growth. It is usually recommended for people with various forms of alopecia.
  4. Lycopodium: This treatment is prescribed for people who suffer from premature balding. It is also recommended for pregnant women if they suffer from hair loss.
  5. Natrummuriaticum: This homeopathic remedy is made from sodium chloride and is used to treat hair problems resulting from skin complications. It is also recommended for women who face hair loss from menstrual problems. It treats dandruff and hair disorders due to hormonal imbalances.
  6. Sulfur: Sulfur is an excellent homeopathic remedy to treat hair loss as it promotes hair growth. It also eliminates dandruff from the scalp.

Causes, Symptoms And Treatment of Keratosis Pilaris!

DDV, MBBS
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Causes, Symptoms And Treatment of Keratosis Pilaris!

The skin has a protein called keratin that protects it from infections and other harmful toxins.  For various reasons, mostly unknown, but likely genetic, there could be a build up of this keratin leading to small, light-colored, hard bumps under the skin that can feel like sandpaper. This condition is medically known as keratosis pilaris.  These pillars of keratin block the hair follicles that open onto the surface of the skin, and when a number of follicles are blocked, it leads to dry, bumpy feeling. In common words, it is also referred to as chicken skin, chicken bumps, or goose bumps.

  • Occurrence:  The onset is usually in the first decade of life, continues to grow in number in teenagers (80%), and slowly subsides as they grow older (40% of adults).  People with dry skin are more likely to have these bumps than people with oily skin. The most commonly affected areas include upper arms, thighs, buttocks and very rarely on the face.
  • Cause: This is a genetic disorder, and the bumps are due to excessive formation and buildup of keratin due to faulty genes.  There could be surplus skin formation under these follicles or hair follicles trapped under these bumps. There could be a small area of inflammation and redness around the bumps.
  • Weather correlation:  Keratosis pilaris is more common and evident during the winter months when the skin is normally drier than in summer months.  Some people could have this condition lifelong, with only manifestation seen in winters and complete absence of bumps in the summer months.
  • Symptoms: The condition is usually asymptomatic, except for the dryness, and does not cause itching or medical harm. The esthetic concern, especially if in upper arms, is the only concern.  Some people could be affected by the hard, bumpy feeling of the skin.  There are no long-term medical symptoms or harmful effects of this condition though.
  • Treatment:  No treatment is required; however, moisturizers may be required to prevent the bumps from drying up. In very severe cases, creams may be used to remove dead skin cells and to prevent plugged follicles. Alpha hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, or lactic acid containing creams can be used to remove the dead skin cells. These also help moisturize the skin and reduce dryness.  Vitamin A containing creams can be used to unplug the hair follicles. Avoid shaving and waxing.
  • A word of caution though: These creams can cause itching and redness.  Since this condition is prevalent in children, these creams need to be used only if absolutely essential and with medical prescriptions. The condition is harmless and self-limiting, so no treatment is mandatory.  Patient education is of utmost importance in these cases.

Use sunscreen having spf20-30 during 9 am to 4 pm. Repeat application every 2-3 hourly to prevent suntanning. Do not scratch your acne that leaves pigmentation. For acne you can use clindamycin cream two times daily only over acne.

Chemical Peels - What Conditions Can They Treat?

DNB, MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, MS - Plastic Surgery, MBBS
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Delhi
Chemical Peels - What Conditions Can They Treat?

A chemical peel is a form of skin treatment where an acid solution is used for the removal of damaged outer layers of the skin. Alpha hydroxyl acids and trichloroacetic acids are used in chemical peels. Phenol is also applied to the skin. Chemical peels aid in improving the skin’s appearance. The chemical acid solution makes the skin peel off. The new skin is much smoother and is less wrinkled.

Chemical peels are of several types:

  1. Superficial peels: In this type, alpha hydroxyl acid is used to penetrate the outer layer of the skin and exfoliates it gently. Superficial peels are used for improving the appearance of mild skin discoloration and rough skin.
  2. Medium peels: In medium peels, trichloroacetic acid is used for penetrating into the middle layers of the skin to remove damaged cells. Improvement in age spots, lines and wrinkles can be done using medium peels. Rough skin is smoothened.
  3. Deep peels: In the case of deep peels, trichloroacetic acid or phenol is used for penetrating the middle layers of the skin to remove damaged cells. Skin appearance is improved drastically.

Conditions treated with chemical peels
Chemical peels are used for the treatment of certain conditions. They can be used to treat the following conditions:

  1. Reduction in fine lines which occur under the eyes or around the mouth.
  2. Treatment of wrinkles which are caused due to sun damage or old age. This is done using chemical peels.
  3. Chemical peels help in improving the appearance of mild scars on the skin surface.
  4. Several types of acne are cured by chemical peels.
  5. Chemical peels help in reducing age spots, freckles and dark patches known as melasma, which occur because of pregnancy or because of taking birth control pills.
  6. The overall look and feel of the skin are improved after using chemical peels.

After a chemical peel treatment is done, the skin becomes extra sensitive to the sun. Hence, it is recommended to use a sunscreen lotion, which also protects against UVA and UVB light rays.

Are chemical peels safe?
Chemical peels are very effective and provide perfect rejuvenation to the skin. However, as far as safety is concerned, you should know that chemical peels have some side effects.

  • They may result in a temporary or permanent change in the skin color, especially in women who take birth control pills.
  • Scarring can occur and cold sores can get reactivated.

Chemical peels involve the use of chemicals or acid to improve the appearance and condition of the skin. This procedure is an effective one and satisfactory results are obtained.
