Conjunctivitis - How You Can Deal With It?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Conjunctivitis - How You Can Deal With It?

One of the most contagious infections to affect children and adults is conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. This makes the blood vessels of the eye more visible and turns the white part of the eye pinkish. This condition can be caused by a number of factors such as exposure to bacteria or viruses, allergens and irritants. Treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the cause of the condition.

The first step towards treating this disease is to correctly diagnose it. Some of the symptoms that can be noticed are:

  1. Redness in the white of the eye
  2. Itchiness and burning in the eye
  3. Discharge from the eye
  4. Crusting of the eyelids
  5. Increased sensitivity to light

If you notice any of these symptoms persisting for over a few days, consult a doctor immediately. There are two aspects to dealing with conjunctivitis; preventing the infection from spreading and reducing the infection. Here are a few tips to help stop the infection from spreading.

  1. Stop wearing contact lenses. While the infection persists, wear spectacles instead. Once your eyes have healed, dispose of the old contacts lenses and solution and get yourself a new pair.
  2. Wash your hands often. This is especially important if you have touched your eyes and will prevent the infection from spreading.
  3. Avoid sharing contact lenses, eye makeup and other forms of makeup along with makeup brushes.
  4. Avoid rubbing your eyes. Often conjunctivitis can affect only one eye at a time. Keeping yourself from rubbing or touching the infected eye will keep the infection from spreading to the other eye.
  5. Remove the discharge from around your eye every few hours with a clean cotton swab. Throw the swab away after it has been used once and wash your hands with soap and water before touching anything else.
  6. Avoid using swimming pools and hot tubs.
  7. Wash towels. Pillow cases, sheets and other things that come in regular contact with your eyes every few days with hot water to disinfect them.

In most cases of infective conjunctivitis, antibiotics are not needed. Instead lubricant eye drops are prescribed that are available over the counter. This can help ease soreness and stickiness in the eye. When using lubricant eye drops, do not let the dropper touch the infected eye and do not use the same eye drops for both eyes. Untreated conjunctivitis can be treated with antibiotics such as chloramphenicol and fusidic acid. These antibiotics can have a few side effects such as blurred vision and hence you must avoid driving and operating heavy machinery after using them.

For the past 3 days I've noticed my 8 months old son has been shutting his eyes randomly. Sometimes when he's playing he just closes them for a second or 2 then opens them back up. Anyone know what could cause this? I am very much worried.

If eyeglasses or soft contact lenses cannot control keratoconus, then gas permeable contact lenses usually are the preferred treatment. Their rigid lens material enables GP lenses to vault over the cornea, replacing its irregular shape with a smooth, uniform refracting surface to improve vision.

I am 14 years old. My eyesight is very weak, my right eye is weaker. I have been wearing glasses since 3 to 4 years. My doctor said they won't improve until I am completely grown. He suggested me to put my left eye closed for 3 to 4 hours a day and try to use my right eye more than that of left. Is he right? Will this really work?

Myopia is a common condition of the eye where the person can see things near him clearly while those at a distance seem blurry. Myopia is also known as nearsightedness or shortsightedness. It is most commonly seen in children and during adolescence. It may develop slowly or gradually and it mostly tends to run in families. Myopia mainly occurs when the light entering the eye does not directly focus on the retina, but rather in front of it. A person suffering from myopia tends to partially close his eyes to see clearly. People who are myopic often complain of headaches due to eye strain and blink excessively. Day-to-day activities are hindered and the person has difficulty driving at night (night myopia). Homeopathy is a wonderful science of treatment with medicines made from natural substances. These medicines are safe from toxic side-effects and make a dynamic impact at the root level to heal the condition and restore good health. A major advantage of the Homeopathic mode of treatment in myopia is that it stops further progression and sometimes even corrects the sight . They are equally effective in persons of all age groups. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects

I have eye bags problem .i'm just of 18 years .my face looks dull and oily in afternoon .and I have pimples on my face.

I have eye bags problem .i'm just of 18 years .my face looks dull and oily in afternoon .and I have pimples on my face.
Bags under the eyes may be caused by a variety of reasons including age, fluid retention, consumption of salty food, allergies, lack of sleep, stress. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity due to the loss or reduction of collagen production which provides support to the tissue and muscle supporting the eyelid. The skin then sags and the fat that is normally confined to the orbit moves down. Similarly, lack of sleep, stress and a work routine that demands constantly staring at a computer screen, can all lead to dark circles and bags under the eyes. This makes us look tired and less than appealing. Also, the space below your eyes can accumulate fluid, making the under-eye area appear puffy or swollen. Treatment modalities include blepharoplasty and fat grafting. Also hydrate your body, drink as much water as possible. Yes, it seems counter-intuitive when you are retaining water, but hydrating reduces puffiness. So drink a glass of water whenever you notice your eyes getting a little droopy. Consult a oculoplastic surgeon for the same. Regards

Know More About Contact Lenses!

Contact lenses are one of the most convenient ways to correct vision related problems. It is easily disposable and requires the least maintenance. It might have minor side effects in the form of irritations and allergies but it requires the least time for adaptability. They help to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness along with astigmatism and age-related vision problems like presbyopia. Following are the benefits and harms of wearing contact lenses.

Positive effects of contact lenses

1. Better vision - Wearing contact lenses improves your vision to a great amount, especially peripheral vision. They are comfortable to wear and can correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness. They can cause discomfort initially but are more effective than glasses. Lenses are also available in bifocals and tints and can be worn for long periods of time.
2. Great for an active lifestyle - Glasses can be a hindrance to sports activities and can limit your peripheral vision. Lenses, on the other hand, are great for an active lifestyle as they require short adaptation period. They are easy to put and take care of and do not require a lot of maintenance on your part as it needs least cleaning.

Risks of wearing contact lenses

1. Dry eyesDry eyes are the most common side effects of wearing contact lenses
2. Infections - Contact lenses wearers are prone to infection of the cornea called keratitis. It can cause swelling, blurry vision and other problems due to lack of oxygen supply to the cornea. Infection can be prevented by maintaining the hygiene while wearing and taking off lenses.
3. Allergic reactions - Allergic reaction to the contact lens solution can affect your vision as it causes inflammation of the eyeballs and redness. It can also cause eyelid inflammation and limit your scope of vision. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ophthalmologist.

Dryness is not a disease which you can cure by putting lubricating eye drops for few days, while working on smartphone , computer & watching TV for long time without giving importance to the health of eyes. Number of blinking drastically goes down from around 24 per minute to around 8 per minute while working on computer etc causing severe dryness, blurring of vision, headache & increased blinking to compensate dryness .One who works on smartphone etc will have to change &will have to learn how to work on computer for long time without giving any trouble to eyes .One should look away from computer after every 10 minute & should take rest for 10 minutes after every two hours .Every body knows that to become man from monkey took millions of years according to Darwin theory & how you expect that our eyes will adjust to computer in 20 yrs, nature takes its own time, computer development is just 20 yrs history, so you will have to take the help of lubricating eye drops to neutralise the effect of computer etc, dryness is most important cause for this type of complaints ,so you should lubricating eye drops like Refresh liquigel eye drops 4-5 times .

Eyelid Surgery: Risk Factors You Should Know

DNB (Plastic Surgery), MCh, MBBS
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Surat
Eyelid Surgery: Risk Factors You Should Know

Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery, which is used to correct droopy eyelids. It reduces the saggy quality of lower eyelids which you get with age and also rids of the excess skin from the upper lids. Apart from making your eyes look younger, Blepharoplasty also enhances your peripheral vision which can get affected due to sagging skin. An eyelid surgery does not help you get rid of dark circles or crow's feet which you get on the outer corner of your eyes.

Reasons to Consider Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is a good option if you want to get rid of the sagging skin from your lower eyelids or the excess skin on your upper eyelids. Sometimes with age your lower eyelids may appear puffy, making you look old and exhausted all the time. An eyelid surgery can make your eyes look younger and livelier and also do away with the grooves and lines formed under your eyes.

Precautions to take after the Surgery

You need to stay indoors after the surgery for more than a week for your eyelids to heal. You may suffer from dry eyes; so always keep ice packs handy. Your doctor may prescribe eye drops or artificial tears, according to your needs. Make sure you always use clean towels and consume painkillers only if your doctor recommends.

It is of primary importance to follow up the surgery with postoperative care. Your doctor will give you detailed information about dressing, a dosage of antibiotics, activity level allowed and also the complications which can arise. Make sure you follow all the instructions and are prepared for the symptoms associated with it.

Risks associated with Eyelid Surgery

Fortunately, major complications associated with Blepharoplasty are rare; yet there could be some side effects of this surgery. Sometimes, there might be cases of infection and bleeding or a bad reaction to anesthesia. Hematoma or accumulation of blood under the skin is also one of the side effects of eyelid surgery.
