My mother (50) got her varicose vein laser surgery in 2012. She wore stocks and followed her doctor. Today she says that her leg is swelling if she don't do walking. She is a teacher by profession. She also says that her buttocks are paining. She goes for yearly checkup but still she is not satisfied with her condition. What could be the actual problem. Could you suggest anything.

Is surgery is the only option to treat varicose veins? If I go for laser surgery (ELVes) fpr varicose veins will there be any side effects?

If you have pain, swelling or ulcer its better to consider for surgery. If its minimal you can go on stockings which will keep varicosities under control. Laser has very very minimal side effects and are rare.

Varicose vein when symptomatic require treatment confirm the severity of disease and then plan mangememt. However to prevent extent of disease 1. Avoid long standing. 2. Wear stockings throughout day. 3. During night elevate legs over two pillows 4. Get doppler of veins done to know severity and need for intervention if any. 5. Consult vascular surgeon in your area.

Hello, I have a problem of varicose veins. How do I reduce? Whenever I try walking, I get issue of leg pain. And due to which it becomes impossible to go for walk for next 3-4 days. Please suggest what should I do?

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, DNB (Peripheral Vascular Surgery), DNB (General Surgery), MNAMS
Vascular Surgeon, Nashik
Generally varicose vein will get reduced on walking as walking increases muscle action which in turn increases vein action to push blood to heart. Although it can occur in rare instances. I will suggest you to see a doctor whether presence of varicose vein is only cause of our pain? Which needs to be assessed.
