The Diabetes-Depression Connection

MD - Diabetology, MBBS
Diabetologist, Surat
The Diabetes-Depression Connection

According to most experts, Depression and Diabetes have been intricately connected in a vicious cycle. While the prolonged and sustaining nature of diabetes directly makes one vulnerable to the bouts of depression, doctors tend to locate traces of depression in the family history of an individual in order to diagnose the roots of diabetes. It won't be too far-fetched to state that both causes as well as affects the other.

If you have diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, you have an increased risk of developing depression. And if you're depressed, you may have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that diabetes and depression can be treated together. And effectively managing one can have a positive effect on the other.

How Diabetes and Depression Correlated?
There are myriad ways in which diabetes affects depression and vice versa.

Firstly, tackling such a long drawn disease and its various pitfalls might cause a lot of anxiety to one and lead to depression. Whereas on the other hand, depression reduces the zeal to live and thus results in poor lifestyle choices which in turn causes weight gain, unhealthy food habits, physical inactivity. As we are well aware, all these have the potential to wreak havoc for any patient of diabetes.

Similarly, diabetes ushers in various other health complications, adversely impacting one's productivity. This may cause depression in a lot of people.

On the flipside, depression impedes one's ability and enthusiasm to work or communicate, this in turn intervenes with one's monitoring of diabetes. Since these two extremely malevolent diseases have such close connections, medical science recommends ways to grapple with both. The rigors of managing diabetes can be stressful and lead to symptoms of depression.

Diabetes can cause complications and health problems that may worsen symptoms of depression.

Depression affects your ability to perform tasks, communicate and think clearly. This can interfere with your ability to successfully manage diabetes.

Treatment: Depression is just like any other illness, it can be treated. Treatment can lift the depression and improve diabetes control.

Looking after your diabetes will help decrease the risk of getting depression. If you already have depression, good diabetes management will help lessen the negative impacts it can have. Depression is no different to any of the other complication of diabetes. It is a genuine illness for which you need to seek help and support from health professionals.

The treatment for depression and diabetes involves a coordinated approach that monitors both diabetes control and the symptoms of depression. It is about finding the treatment that works best for each person. For example, people with diabetes and mild depression may find that regular physical activity improves depressed moods and also helps control blood glucose levels.

Helping Yourself.

If you suspect you might have depression, take control of your health by:

  • Going to a doctor or other health professional
  • Getting involved in social activities
  • Engaging in regular moderate physical activity
  • Learning about depression and diabetes
  • Very particular about medicines prescribed for Diabetes
  • Eating healthily and including a wide variety of nutritious foods
  • Achieving and maintaining healthy weight
  • Limiting your alcohol intake
  • Getting help, support and encouragement from family and friends
  • Asking your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

thanks. I also feel that my vagina become loose n sides are become darker in color. Is their any treatment or homemade solution.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
You should do kegel exercises to tighten your vagina. It should be done continuously for 3 to 4 months to get the results. For doing kegel exercises you have to tighten vagina with the help of surrounding muscles. To contract the correct muscles, you can insert a finger inside your vagina and try tightening around your finger. You don't need to put your finger every time you do the exercise. Once you tighten your vagina and its muscles, you start counting from 1 to 10 and then only relax the vagina. Keep repeating similar exercises 5-6 times in a single setting.

Facts about Dementia

What is dementia? Dementia is a term used to describe various different brain disorders that have in common a loss of brain function that is usually progressive and eventually severe. There are over 100 different types of dementia. The most common are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
Most forms of dementia cannot be cured. There are some drugs available that appear to alleviate some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in some people.
How dementia progresses?

All types of dementia are progressive illnesses. This means that the structure and chemistry of the brain become increasingly damaged over time. The person's ability to remember, understand, communicate and reason will gradually decline.
Genetic factors are responsible for the disease in only a very small number of families. There is no single gene for Alzheimer's disease and inherited factors alone do not explain why some people develop it while others do not.
The Alzheimer's Society estimates that there are currently over 700,000 people in the UK with dementia.

Researchers believe that many factors, including age, genetic background and lifestyle, can lead to the onset of the disease. The prevalence of dementia in people with learning difficulties is higher than in the general population.

What is dementia?
The term 'dementia' is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, stroke and many other rarer conditions. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.Different areas of the brain are responsible for different skills and abilities. The changes in behaviour, memory and thought in people with Alzheimer's disease may be a direct result of the way the disease has affected their brain.See also information sheet
There are several diseases and conditions that cause dementia.See also information sheet

Causes of dementia include:
Alzheimer's diseaseThis is the most common cause of dementia. During the course of the disease, the chemistry and structure of the brain changes, leading to the death of brain cells. Information sheet.

Vascular diseaseIf the oxygen supply to the brain fails, brain cells may die. The symptoms of vascular dementia can occur either suddenly, following a stroke, or over time, through a series of small strokes. Information sheet
Dementia with Lewy bodiesThis form of dementia gets its name from tiny spherical structures that develop inside nerve cells. Their presence in the brain leads to the degeneration of brain tissue. Memory, concentration and language skills are affected. Information sheet

Palliative Care for Cancer Patients

MD - Ayurveda
Ayurveda, Bargarh
Palliative Care for Cancer Patients

With terminal illnesses like cancer, the disease is not the only thing that requires treatment. In addition to controlling the severity and spread of the main disease, the effect it has on the other body systems including emotional, social, psychological problems and also physical issues like pain and inflammation. Though the disease has reached an advanced stage and cannot be cured, the patient can be made to be pain-free and at peace to the extent possible.

The goal of palliative care is not to cure - in fact, palliative care is in place for diseases like cancer from the time it is diagnosed and treatment is begun but becomes the major component of treatment once the cancer is identified to be in terminal stages. Therapeutic care aimed at curing the cancer is gradually reduced and palliative care assumes a bigger role. This is also called as symptomatic care, supportive care, or comfort care.

Aspects of palliative care: Once the disease is identified to be in terminal stages, then the following become considerations:

  1. Stay at home or hospital
  2. Withdraw chemotherapy and radiation?
  3. Withdraw feeding tube
  4. Spiritual discussions
  5. Reduce anxiety
  6. Good quality time with the family
  7. Reduce pain and suffering

As is evident, there is a huge component of social/emotional/spiritual management in addition to reducing pain and suffering:

  • Physical: Pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, sleeplessness, loss of appetite are some symptoms that need to be managed. In addition to pain killers, small exercises can be included to make them feel better, even if it is just getting a breath of fresh air.
  • Social: Depression (learn the ways to handle depression), anxiety, uncertainty, fear are all looming large and they are not sure how to manage these feelings. Talking to a counselor or some close family member or friend can be a big relief - the burden is off their chest.
  • Legal: There could be issues related to property, insurance, property that also need to be discussed. External help can be sought if required to provide financial counselling and legal advice.
  • Spiritual: Looking into the spiritual needs and understanding the deeper meaning of life, restoring faith are some things that also can help them feel better. "Why did this happen to me?" is a question most people keep asking and while there is no answer, some solace can be provided through talks.

It is to be noted that palliative care is not just for the patient. The caretakers (family and close friends) are equally in need of some support. So, once the patient is identified to be in terminal stages, all effort is made so the final leg of the journey is peaceful and as painless as possible.

Its just an attitude problem. Due to high sebsitivity/emotional mind is the cause of all these expressions. Urs age also a bit significant to get easily excited. If you plan to follow few tips regularly without fail, then your all emotions will come under control. **try to follow regulary yoga **breathing exercises/pranayaama **meditation **try to go for art of living's sessions where thar sudarshana kriya would b thought is very effective in balancing mind&body equilibrium. **whenever you feel like you got hurt, try to grt engaged with friends r with your family members to get deviated from that incident. Or try to watch movie r with your favourite hobby, work whatever. But do not sit alone in that situation. Brooding will upset you more. *try to share everything (especially that bitter feelings) with your trusted one. That will reduce the intensity. If you want to cry. Cry alone in a room without hesitation.
