Any solution for it...
There are certain reason for keeping hand in mouth. Usually bottle fed and/ or hungry baby develop this habit. This is age is for weaning. Start semi solids beside breast feeding and top milk (not in bottle). It may solve problem.

You need to train baby to accept solid food. Dietary discpline is important & never succumb to undue demands , never offer him replacements of a home made wholesome diet. Have patience he will take normal diet as hunger is bigger than tantrums.

Regarding the ultrasound you need to check with the ultrasonologist to give you a report. If urine is showing some bacteria it mayindicate infection if he has symptoms of fever etc. Baby needs to be examined and investigated with further tests.

My baby boy is 1 1/2 month old. Which oil is best for baby's massage for his fair skin tone.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Zirakpur
My baby boy is 1 1/2 month old. Which oil is best for baby's massage for his fair skin tone.
Using an oil can make massage easier for you and more relaxing for your baby. Everyone seems to have an opinion on which oil is best for baby massage. Some parents favor baby mineral oils, while others choose a particular vegetable oil. Some oils are thought to be more easily absorbed into skin. You may find massage easier with an oil that soaks in, or you may prefer one that stays more slippery on your baby's skin. Your decision about what to use also depends on your baby's skin. If your baby has eczema, it is better to use her medical emollient cream or ointment. There are some oils or creams that it's best not to use, whether or not your baby has eczema. These are: mustard oil, because it has a toxic effect on the skin barrier, causing irritation and potential damage to delicate baby skin. Unrefined peanut oil, because the proteins it contains may sensitise your baby to an allergic reaction to peanuts or cause a reaction on your baby's skin. It's also best not to use refined peanut oil. Although it's unlikely to cause a problem, refined oil may be cross-contaminated with unrefined oil. Aqueous cream, because it contains a harsh detergent called sodium lauryl sulfate that may irritate your baby's skin and damage her skin barrier vegetable oils that are high in linoleic acid may be gentler on your baby's skin. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that helps to protect the barrier element of your baby's skin. Vegetable oils that usually contain high levels of linoleic acid include: sunflower oil grapeseed oil if your baby has dry or broken skin, or atopic eczema, avoid vegetable oils that are higher in another type of fatty acid called oleic acid. Vegetable oils high in oleic acid may be harsher on your baby's skin than vegetable oils rich in linoleic acid or baby mineral oils. Olive oil is high in oleic acid. One study on adults found that, compared with sunflower seed oil, using olive oil on the skin damaged the skin barrier. It caused mild redness even when there was no history of sensitive skin. Oleic acid can make some layers of your baby's skin more permeable. This permeability could help oil and water to be absorbed into your baby's skin. But it could also mean that oil and water is lost, rather than trapped in. So if your baby's skin is already dry and tender, then oleic acid could increase moisture loss from it, which causes dry skin.

M.Sc - Food & Nutrition, PG Diploma In Diabetes Education
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Gurgaon
Hi lybrate-user, If your child is regularly having strengthening and healthy food and supplements too. But unable to gain weight. We need to go with Ayurvedic Nutrition .I will recommend for "Genetic Scanning" It will tell, what of his vital organs are in strain that's why he is not able to gain weight and strength. What food (fruit, vegetable, cereals.) according to his prakriti - Vata, Pitta, Kapha are best suitable for him. Sometime we are having all the good food in our diet .but if it is not suitable to our Prakriti ,it will not get digest and absorbed by our body, thus will increase by- produces and toxin level. We will feel lethargic and low. If you want .we can explain you further over call .)

Child Aphasia - Symptoms And Treatment!

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jaipur
Child Aphasia - Symptoms And Treatment!

Child Aphasia is complex disorder that is caused by damage to parts of the brain that controls language and speech. This disorder affects the child's ability to express herself through words and understand the speech of other people. The severity of the problem depends on the extent of the damage as well as the location of the damage. Since this is not a birth disorder, therefore, you should be much more careful as so you notice that your kid is facing language disorder. A speech pathologist can diagnose language disorders and teach your child strategies to help.

What are the leading symptoms of aphasia in kids?

  1. Not understanding speech is one of the most common symptoms. Most patients cannot understand spoken or written language. Typically in these cases, the patient suffers from fluent Aphasia, which is caused by damage to the left temporal lobe of the brain. The patient's speech might seem meaningless and incoherent with lots of unnecessary words being used. The child usually becomes upset when people don't understand what he is saying.
  2. Patients suffering from this disorder also have trouble expressing their thoughts and understanding language and they often take more time to communicate. Only short sentences are used by these patients with words often left out, making the sentence sound incomplete. Such children suffer from non-fluent Aphasia where they understand what others are saying, but cannot communicate or speak well themselves. Their speech is almost similar to that of telegraphic languages that are usually followed by those toddlers who are just learning how to speak.
  3. Some children suffering from Aphasia might have trouble repeating words even though they don't have problem understanding what others are saying. These children suffer from conduction Aphasia and will be able to reproduce only parts of a sentence, if asked to repeat.
  4. Children affected with this disorder may see to be not listening to you or ignore you.
  5. Such kids might also have behavioral problems and may not be able to keep up with their friends and classmates. They will also suffer from forgetfulness.

Causes of Aphasia: The leading cause of Aphasia is brain injury, brain infection, brain tumour or abscess or bleeding in the brain.

Diagnosis of the disease: The disorder is diagnosed by a speech therapist who assesses the condition with a variety of tools to figure out the extent of damage. Its best to take your child to a paediatric speech pathologist who is an expert in treating children with brain injuries. The child will then be assessed on auditory comprehension, verbal expression, reading and writing ability and functional communication.

Treatment: There are many people who think that the speech trouble cannot be treated, but they are completely wrong. There are various ways to treat Aphasia. The younger the patient the better the chances of recovery since the brain is not that developed to handle specific functions in kids as in adults. The treatment will depend on the severity of the condition and the goal that is to be achieved. Factors behind this trouble need to be determined first otherwise the perfect treatment cannot be decided. Some of the most prominent factors are aphasia type, brain-injury cause, age, brain-lesion size and positioning and others.

Some of the leading tips that can be applied as per Association of National Stroke are as follows:

  1. Using props can be helpful in getting across messages.
  2. Speaking slowly and staying calm while speaking.
  3. Drawing pictures or words on paper for communication.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.

ADHD: Signs And Symptoms You Might Be Suffering From It!

ADHD: Signs And Symptoms You Might Be Suffering From It!

If you have noticed your child to be restless and anxious all the time, it might look cute as the child is highly energetic, but it could be a cause for concern at the same time. It is not normal and the child could be having ADHD that is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. As the name suggests, it is a disorder with deficiency of attention and in which the child is always hyperactive.

ADHD is a disorder in which the symptoms usually show up before the age of seven. It is characterized by a group of behavioral symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. The impact of these symptoms is felt extensively where his overall self-esteem is affected, be it at home, preschool or school, academics or extracurricular activities and in interpersonal relationships.

The most common symptoms, which are almost diagnostic of ADHD are:

  1. Inability to hold attention: The child's attention span is very short and it is very difficult to keep them engaged on one particular thing.
  2. Increased restlessness: The child would be extremely restless and gets distracted easily.
  3. Fidgeting: The child would be seen constantly fidgeting with his fingers.

The following are the less common ones:

  1. Learning disability is rare, but can happen. However, the good news is that it does not affect the child's intelligence.
  2. Sleep disorders
  3. Difficulty in following directions
  4. Poor executive functioning skills
  5. Disorganization, which can lead to poor motor coordination and impaired movements
  6. ADHD kids tend to forget things very easily and need help with coordinating movements
  7. The child suffering from ADHD could easily tire and/or feel lethargic with very low energy levels. This can lead to the child procrastinating things and not wanting to do things on priority basis
  8. These children also have difficulties with fine motor and cognitive skills and so there is delay in their overall participation in games.

While these are the pressing symptoms of ADHD, occupational therapy can play a significant role in managing the child in the following ways. As a first step, the caregiver should have a detailed discussion with the school staff and any other people with whom the child interacts significantly.

This will help identify areas that need support from an Occupational Therapy, which are the following:

  1. Support with gross and/or fine motor skills
  2. Support with improving handwriting
  3. Support with engaging in playing sports and games
  4. Support in engaging in social activities
  5. Improving sensory processing difficulties
  6. Improving visual perception
  7. Support in adapting to the environment
  8. Teaching strategies to participate in various social and academic activities

So, while an ADHD child is definitely a cause for concern, proper support from family can help manage the condition. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pediatrician.

Hi, I have a 4 month old girl child. Please suggest how to care for and how to treat for best grow. And suggest any books, literature or tools which help us better. Thanking you.

General Physician,
To give you a good guidance I need to know the present weight. Weight alone is not the indicator of good health. You can continue to give breast milk and add home made semisolids like raggi porridge, mashed banana and slowly introduce all the homemade foods. You need to be in regular touch with me so that I can personally interact and guide you as this is very interesting part of caring for babies, I like. Ask me privately.

My 6 years old son is suffering from stomach pain for last 1 year. The pain occurs once or twice every day for 2 - 5 minutes and automatically get cured. We have done all types of blood testing, mantu test, usg of whole abdomen, x ray but every reports are normal. Doctors prescribe only anti allergy medicines but of no help. Please suggest what to do.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Ranchi
Hello thanks for the query I would like to know if there is any headache or visual disturbances associated with abdominal pain. If all the investigations are normal and the pain abdomen is not hampering the daily activity, there is no loss of appetite, no weight loss, not disturbing night sleep, not associated with vomiting or loose stool I won't get overly worried. There is a condition called recurrent pain abdomen which is a common cause in this age group and does not need any specific management. It improves as the child grows. Give antispasmodic for symptomatic relief.

My daughter, 15 years old is still having nocturnal bed wetting. Please advise me how this can be corrected.

Pediatrician, Kaithal
Please get your child examined from a urologist. Restrict milk and hot beverages after 5pm. Whether child is under stress or depression. Child needs full evaluation before treatment. Last thing please do not punish your child for it.

You can wake him up at set interval to feed or if baby sleeps comfortable then can wait 4-5 hours and feed once they get up and would be more comfortable if they sleep after a good feed.
