How Effective is Homeopathy in Treating Cardiovascular Diseases?

The Homeopathic medicines have been made use of even before the 18th century, but the systematic investigation and thorough study on these medicines were carried out by the German physician Samuel Christian Hahnemann. Homeopathic medicines are very useful in strengthening the resistance of an individual to an illness and medications are provided after studying the sick patient and not the disease. The medicines prescribed do not mainly depend on the diagnostic testing or blood chemistry analysis. They are, in fact, prescribed on the basis of direct observation of the symptoms reported by a patient.

How effective is homeopathy in treating cardiovascular diseases?
Homeopathy medicines are widely used to treat several medical conditions. Homeopaths prescribe constructional remedies for illnesses that are chronic in nature and these mainly include cardiovascular complaints. It is after understanding the cardiac symptoms of a patient are homeopathic medicines prescribed. The different cardiac complaints for which homeopathic medicines can be taken include congestive heart failure, palpitations, angina and syncope.

The homeopathy medicines are used to treat even many clinical and cardiovascular diseases. Many random trials have been done to prove that homeopathy treatment is effective in treating conditions like childhood diarrhoea, allergic conditions and post-operative conditions. These medicines are also used to treat respiratory, nervous cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. High blood pressure can also be treated using the homeopathy medicines. This is because an increased blood pressure is very risky as it can cause heart troubles and there are possibilities of an individual having a stroke.

Cardiac problems that can be Treated By Homeopathy Medicines

  1. Conditions like nervousness and worrying are the main cause of hypertension and it results in high blood pressure. Hence, this condition should be checked on time.
  2. It is very important that right medications are taken and that are prescribed by a qualified doctor. The homeopathic medicines that are prescribed for high blood pressure include Nux vomica, Calcarea carbonica, Sanguinaria, Plumbum and Phosphorous.
  3. Use of homeopathic medicines unlike the prescription medicines does not cause any side effects, and they are of great use in decreasing hypertension.

However, homeopathic medicines should also be taken after consulting the Doctor. The blood pressure and cholesterol level of an individual are lowered using homeopathic medicines, and these are of great use in preventing a heart attack. There are many cardiologists who even prescribe homeopathic medicines to their patients for treating a cardiovascular disease. The depiction of cardiac symptoms is quite different and these include bursting, aching, cold, cramps, heaviness, jerks, pulsation, spasm, oppression and throbbing and depending on the symptoms, homeopathic medicines are provided to treat the health condition.

Pregnant - Your Third Trimester Guide!

Pregnant - Your Third Trimester Guide!

Pregnancy is a stage which needs to be cautiously enjoyed by all expectant mothers. The word ‘cautiously’ is used and stressed upon by medical practitioners because it is a period where two lives are at stake i.e the mother’s and the baby’s. Both their health and nutrition are of the utmost importance during this stage. In the third trimester, which includes the seventh, eighth and ninth month, when the delivery date is knocking on your doorstep, you should be more cautious than ever.

Some of the precautions to be taken during these months are listed below.
Seventh month

  1. By this time, the essential features of the baby, such as hands and legs are fully developed. In fact, the baby might just start moving and should be given some space. Thus, expectant women must be watchful of the weight they carry. At no cost must their spine be injured or hurt. This can be disastrous for both the mother and the baby.
  2. It is best to avoid stairs, if possible and certainly use the elevator for higher floors. In case you have to take the stairs, then holding the railings would give you the support you need. For physical exercises, you can go for a walk or just practice simple breathing exercises to keep you active.
  3. Extra sleep is required during this month; and that too on the left side. Sleeping on the right side should be avoided. This helps in smooth blood circulation.

Eighth month

  1. This month is crucial for the baby as it is nearing delivery. As an expectant mother you should be able to understand the signs your body gives you. It is best to avoid heavy weight lifting and too much of work. You should drink lots of water and keep yourself hydrated all the time.
  2. Avoid dust, animal excretes and stale food is important as it might hinder the brain development of the unborn child.
  3. Overeating should be avoided.
  4. You must take a break from household chores.
  5. Exercises must be continued under supervision.
  6. Fish must be avoided as at times they contain mercury which is not good for the unborn baby.

Ninth month

  1. Travelling is a strict no-no during this month.
  2. You must decide on the process of the delivery—natural or C-section beforehand.
  3. Going for regular check-ups is mandatory.

These are some of the precautions which must be taken during the last three months of your pregnancy. It would ensure the good health and well-being of your baby as well as your own.

Olive Oil Vs Coconut Oil - Which One Should You Use?

MBBS
General Physician, Bhubaneswar
Olive Oil Vs Coconut Oil - Which One Should You Use?

When you just came to the conclusion that olive oil is healthy for your health, suddenly, you may have read another study result that says that coconut oil is best for your health. No doubt, you are puzzled and confused which one to take. In this article, we will try to give you some idea of the healthy aspects of coconut oil and olive oil and some hard facts about them.

Let’s find them out.

1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
119 Calories 116 Calories
14 (g) Total Fat  14 (g) Total Fat
1 (g) Saturated Fat  12 (g) Saturated Fat
9.8 (g) Monosaturated Fat  0.8 (g) Monosaturated Fat
1.4 (g) Polysaturated Fat 0.2 (g) Polysaturated Fat
0 (mg) Cholesterol 0 (mg) Cholesterol

Goodness of Coconut Oil - The Saturated Fats

  1. Acts as an Antioxidant and Reduces Oxidative Stress: Virgin coconut oil consists of some antioxidants, like polyphenols and flavonoids. In the process of oxidative stress, the blood vessels in our body and heart get affected that leads to heart attack. These antioxidants keep us safe from such heart ailments.
  2. HighTemperature Resistant: It means that, if you cook in high temperature in coconut oil, you won’t get your food smoked. Coconut oil is a saturated fat, and it is high temperature resistant.
  3. Reduces Hunger: It keeps you away from those irritating hunger pangs when you consume foods cooked in coconut oil.
  4. Improves metabolic rate: Coconut oil increases metabolic rate that ultimately helps to reduce our waist size.

Goodness of Olive Oil - The Monounsaturated Fats

  1. Heart Friendly Fat: Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats. The American Heart Association has certified these fats as a heart friendly fat.
  2. Lowers LDL Cholesterol: Olive oil helps in lowering the low density cholesterol level that is known as bad cholesterol in our body.
  3. Some Essential Substances Present in It: Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and polyphenolic compounds. These two components are antioxidants that help in reducing the systemic inflammation level in our body.

Now the point is: Which Oil Is Better for Your Health?

The Verdict
So, from the table and discussion, it is clear that both coconut and olive oil are good for our health. But none of them are miracle fats. You need to consume both oils in small amounts. For cooking foods that need high temperature, like roasting, stir frying, you can use coconut oil as it has high temperature resistance. On the other hand, for simple cooking, use olive oil. But don’t use extra virgin olive oil for cooking, as heat at higher levels can destroy the Vitamin E and Polyphenol compounds in the Olive Oil.

Eye Floaters - When Should You Consult A Doctor?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology

Eye Floaters - When Should You Consult A Doctor?

Ever noticed spots or strands that ‘float’ into your line of vision. These are known as floaters. In most cases, they do not affect your vision, but can cause a lot of discomfort. Thus, in most cases they do not require treatment unless they affect your vision significantly. Floaters are more likely to stand out when looking at bright objects or something like a clear blue sky. Moving your eyes can shift the fluid in your eyes and move these floaters out of your line of sight.

Dust particles entering and irritating the eye should not be confused with floaters. Floaters can be described as flecks of a protein called collagen. These flecks can be seen when they are loosened from the back of the eye known as the vitreous. This can happen at any age but is more likely to affect people between the ages of 50 and 75. Being near sighted or suffering from cataract also increases your risk of seeing floaters. In rare cases, it can also be triggered by a disease in the eye, an injury to the eye, tumors or crystal deposits in the back of the eye.

Noticing the odd floater is not something to worry about. However, if you notice a sudden increase in the number and frequency of floaters in your eye, see flashes of light, have pain in the eyes or experience a loss of side vision, consult a doctor immediately. This could also be a sign of a more serious condition like a detached retina that requires immediate medical attention. Excessive floaters can be removed through a surgery known as a vitrectomy or laser vitreolysis. A vitrectomy involves the removal of vitreous gel from the middle of the eye and replacing it with silicone oil or a gas bubble. The surgery last 2 or 3 hours, but you may require an overnight stay in the hospital.

Laser vitreolysis is a more recent form of treatment for this condition. This pain free procedure involves the projection of a laser beam into the eye that focuses on large floaters to break them apart or vaporize them. This procedure can be performed as an outpatient and is considered safer than a vitrectomy. The form of treatment suited to a person will depend on a number of factors including their age, what the floaters look like, where they are located and the frequency of their appearance.

Our body is set at a particular pattern in addition to our specific body requirements. Our body requires minimum 6-7 hrs. Of sleep but sleeplessness can occur due to tensions, anxiety, using gadgets prior to sleep timing, excess use of tea/coffee. Please try to relax at bedtime or whenever you are trying to fall asleep. Say your prayers. Do not think about the past day or the next day. You can even try counting 1-100. Sounds funny but it helps many a times. Regards,

Vitamin K - Facts You Never Knew About It!

Vitamin K - Facts You Never Knew About It!

Vitamins are essential micronutrients which the body requires, though in small amounts, for optimal health. These chemicals play a crucial role in keeping our body healthy and disease free. One such vitamin is vitamin K, which is essential for optimal blood clotting process, and also has multiple other benefits. More details about the functions, benefits and sources are listed below.

Functions/Benefits:

  1. Vitamin K is actually a group of vitamins and has K1, K2, and K3. The functions and benefits accordingly will depend on the actual chemical being referred to.
  2. These are fat soluble vitamins and therefore absorption is better when something fatty is eaten along with it
  3. Vitamin K1 or phyloquilline reaches the liver and is essential for blood clotting. Reduced levels of vitamin K can lead to uncontrolled bleeding, but this is very rare in adults. Newborns can have this problem, and therefore, it is common to give them a one shot of vitamin K injection.
  4. Vitamin K2 is produced by gut bacteria and reaches blood vessel walls and bones. It prevents hardening and calcification of arteries, which is the main cause of heart disease.
  5. It helps in improving calcium and other mineral concentration in the bones and makes the matrix strong. It can be used in osteoporosis to reverse and control bone loss. It can also be used to heal fractured bones.
  6. It slows the growth of cancer cells and can be used to stabilise cancer. It has been shown to improve multiple forms including hepatocellular, prostate, colon, and oral cancer.
  7. It is beneficial in controlling Alzheimer’s disease and improves memory loss in ageing people
  8. It improves insulin action and therefore prolongs onset of type 2 diabetes
  9. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties (as most other vitamins) and also helps in reducing toxin buildup
  10. It is good for skin health and can help control bruising and dermatitis

Sources:
Vitamin K is found naturally in many foods and the daily dose required for an adult is about 120 to 150 mcg/day. Therefore supplementation is usually not required.
Leafy green vegetables including spinach, okra, cabbage, beans broccoli, and asparagus

  1. Fermented foods like yoghurt
  2. Soybean in all forms including medium cooked as well and Japanese diet uses boiled, fermented soybean called natto, which contains tremendous amount of vitamin K
  3. Nuts, such as cashews, almonds, walnuts, are a good source
  4. Strawberries, grapes, prunes, and apples
  5. Seafood such as salmon and shrimp contain good amount to control heart attack and stroke.
  6. Meat (duck, beef, chicken, and lamb)

Supplements are to be avoided, especially in pregnant and/or nursing mothers and people with a history of stroke, heart disease, heart attack and blood clotting problems.

I think you have a medical condition known as PICA. Eating slate pencil can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea. Since it is made from the dust, it may cause eye irritation, and isn't good for your lungs. Some kinds of chalk may contain toxic additives. Determine and address the nutritional deficiency that is causing you to eat chalk. Once you no longer have a deficiency, your body will stop craving chalk, and the habit will stop on its own.
