Fruits are very best way to keep your gums healthy.
Instead of fruit juices and canned juice, one should prefer whole fruits. They maintain gum texture and make them stronger, they make periodontal ligament stronger. The best part is that they clean your oral cavity throughout and maintain good hygiene.
So eating whole juicy fruits is good for your oral health as well.

The best way to avoid dentist appointment is better brush your teeth twice daily with correct method of brushing, and before going to bed it's mandatory.
Second thing you can do is go to dentist for saying him/her hello and get your teeth clinically examined at least twice in a year.
The above tips are time tested and reliable.
If you can do that much, you are sure to stay out of that dental chair majority of times.
