Mr. Lybrate-user, diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder, if not controlled damages small and large blood vessels, affecting eyes (retina) leading to blindness, kidney causing nephropathy leading to chronic renal failure, affecting lower limbs leading to unhealed ulcers and loss of limb. Affects coronary arteries causing heat attacks, affects nerves causing loss of sensation in legs, feet and burning and tingling and numbness. Looking at your age it must be t1 diabetes. Which needs to more carefully treated. So my advise is to star correct treatment and follow it up regularly without fail. Take care of your health, you are too young to neglect it.

Hi improving your diet and lifestyle is the best way to lose weight. Make small target of losing 2-4 kg per month. Eat breakfast as soon as you wake up. Eat three fruits per day. Drink plenty of water. Eat high fiber vegetables and low fat protein sources. Walk for thirty min minimum daily.

Does eating more sugar in diet cause diabetes? And eating artificial sweeteners is safe?

Does eating more sugar in diet cause diabetes? And eating artificial sweeteners is safe?
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Excess intake of sugar and sweets is not good for health. It may not cause diabetes directly, but will lead to overweight and in turn may prepare ground for diabetes. Junk foods, pastries, bakery items, foods made out of maida, cokes, other sugary drinks all these are culprits which do lead to diabetes. Other factors contributing are being over weight and inactive. Artificial sweeteners are also not very safe. Thanks.

8 Signs You Might Be Suffering From Cubital Tunnel Syndrome!

8 Signs You Might Be Suffering From Cubital Tunnel Syndrome!

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is also known as Ulnar Neuropathy, a nerve compression syndrome where the Ulnar nerve, also known as the funny bone nerve, gets compressed due to heightened pressure or stretching. It can lead to numbness or a tingling sensation in little and ring fingers, sometimes pain in forearm and an overall weakness in the hand. Ulnar nerve is one of the three main nerves in the arm. It runs in a groove on the inner side of the elbow. Since it travels through a narrow space and has very little protective tissue, the nerve is quite vulnerable to compression.

Symptoms
The symptoms of this condition may range from mild to severe. Some of the mild symptoms include:

  1. Numbness in little and ring finger as the fingers fall asleep
  2. A tingling sensation, usually like the pinch of pins and needles in ring and little finger
  3. Pain in forearm
  4. Weakness in the hand
  5. Some of the severe symptoms include:
  6. Reduction in overall hand grip
  7. A claw like deformity in hand
  8. Wasting of muscles of the hand

Bending elbow over a long period of time like while using cell phone or during sleep can cause ulnar nerve compression. Resting the elbow for a long period over a hard surface can also cause an irritation of the nerve, leading to such symptoms. In some cases, the nerve snaps back and forth over a bony bump, resulting in an irritated nerve. People who undertake intense physical activity, especially using their arms, are more likely to develop this problem. Eg. baseball pitchers. Apart from this, people who have suffered from a dislocated elbow or have arthritis are also at risk.

Generally, doctors diagnose this condition through the symptoms. However, nerve tests are also conducted to check the level of nerve compression. Electromyography is a procedure in which electrodes are placed on the skin and muscles to measure muscle health. Determining muscle health and level of compression helps decide the mode of treatment. Generally, the symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome are managed through a conservative treatment. However, in cases of severe compression, surgery can be considered as an option to relieve pressure, moving nerve to the front of the elbow or removing a part of the bone.

For mild cases, a towel or a protective cover for elbow is recommended. The towel should be wrapped around the elbow loosely. An elbow splint can be worn at night to protect the elbow from being bent for long time.

How can a physical therapist help?
A physiotherapist has an essential role to play in treatment of this syndrome. A therapist can help the patient to learn ways of avoiding pressure to the nerve. After surgery, with restrictions of movement, a therapist can help achieve smooth recovery and movement of the elbow. Your physical therapist will determine the activities that bring on your symptoms. The recommendations at this point will be to avoid those activities for a time. Remember, the nerve is irritated and at times swollen. If the irritation and swelling are reduced, the symptoms should resolve.

Swimming. You might call swimming the perfect workout. Tai chi. This Chinese martial art that combines movement and relaxation is good for both body and mind. Strength training. If you believe that strength training is a macho, brawny activity, think again. Walking. Walking is simple, yet powerful. Kegel exercises.

Cinnamon, Honey and Lemon Juice It is a well-known fact that lemon juice aids in weight loss, and lemon juice and honey make a wonderful remedy to speed up the weight loss process as well as to prevent weight gain. And when you combine honey and lemon juice with cinnamon, it makes a more effective remedy for weight loss. Lemon juice acts as a digestive aid and liver cleanser, which supports the weight loss process. Lemon also contains a lot of flavonoids that help to lose weight by controlling the cholesterol and triglyceride level in the body. The Vitamin C content in the lemon juice promotes fat metabolism, thus help you to lose weight effectively. Required Ingredients: Cinnamon Powder – ½ tbsp Honey – 1 tbspLemon Juice – 1 tbspHot Water – 1 cup Process: In a cup of hot water add the cinnamon powder, honey and lemon juice to it.Stir all the ingredients properly and drink it.Take this drink twice a day, once in the morning in an empty stomach and once before going to the bed to lose weight.. The cinnamon and honey remedy will work more effectively if you take it in a particular time.

Supplements and medicines work in isolation with diet. For weight gain body you have to be careful about food food choices & protien intake. Include good sources of protein in your diet such as low fat milk & milk products, soy & sprouts, lean meat, eggs, pulses along with supplements to achieve desirable goals.

Lybrate-user, some times suddenly different symptoms can be seen, particularly with gastrointestinal tract. Indigestion, nauseating feeling can be seen more often in a few patients of diabetes a condition called gastroparesis may develop which delays stomach emptying and hence appetite may be affected. It is very difficult to conclude what exactly might be the reason. My suggestion is to take a lighter food for next few days or eat small quantity of food per meal and take more frequent meal. Also continue walking for about 45 minutes to 1 hour daily. That will aid digestion. Maintain bp and blood glucose levels with in prescribed limit. Avoid fatty and highly processed foods as well as sweets. Consume more of green leafy vegetables. Maintain your glucose levels with in prescribed limit. Thanks.

Hi, Small and frequent meal pattern (6 meal) will be helpful in burning calories and increasing your metabolism. Try having lemon and honey in morning so that it boosts your metabolism. Your diet should include foods like whole grain cereals, legumes and pulses, vegetables, fruits, skimmed milk, lean meat, egg white, fish, skin out chicken, green leafy vegetables and plenty of water. Include healthy food options like green tea, oats, sprouts. Avoid refined carbohydrates, sugary foods, red meat, butter, ghee, margarine, oily and fried foods, junk foods, carbonated beverages. Take steps instead of lift and if the workplace is near to your residence try to go by walk. Do exercise daily either morning or evening depending on your convenience. If you workout then its better you have a post workout snack which can be an oats porridge/ quinoa porridge/ egg white. Dinner should be light with less carbohydrate and moderate protein. Reduce your carbohydrate content in your meal and increase protein content in a healthy way. Having early dinner and giving 2 hours of gap between dinner and sleep will help in gradual weight loss. Walking is the best option (apart from gym workout) and brisk walking if tolerated. Initially start with 2 km and extend 1 km a week, in a month you can lose 2 kg in a healthy way.
