Sexologist, Delhi
I would like to increase my sperm count. I am married man and according to lab test I have only 22% active sperm only.
Dear lybrate-user, There are some rules below for increasing sperm count:- 1. Exercise Regularly-Exercising not only improves your confidence and physical performance — it may also raise your testosterone levels. 2. Get Enough Vitamin C-Oxidative stress is when levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) reach harmful levels in the body. 3. Relax and Minimize Stress-Stress may reduce your sexual satisfaction and impair your fertility. 4. Get Enough Vitamin D-Vitamin D is another nutrient that may boost your testosterone levels. 5.Get Enough Zinc-Zinc is an essential mineral found in high amounts in animal foods, such as meat, fish, eggs and shellfish. Or you can also take a Ayurvedic treatment for the same. For more information about treatment please consult us privately on Lybrate.

I feel intense back pain while seating from lying position. It did not happen when I do it little oblique toward Rt or left. What can be possible reason. Kindly explain treatment modality. Can it be PIVD?

I feel intense back pain while seating from lying position. It did not happen when I do it little oblique toward Rt o...
Hello lybrate-user, Yes, it is suggestive of classic back pain where your IV disc of the spine is slipping posterior, i.e. The jelly like structure between your disc is slipping out of its normal borders. This could be a clear case of PIVD (posterior inter-vertebral disc involvement) with no slipping from the sides of the disc. To begin with, avoid sitting with crossed legs and on a chair for a few days until your pain intensity is reduced. This is to avoid hitting your jelly like disc and prevent it slipping more posterior (backwards) towards the spine. This can cause more pain and might extend up to hips, legs or foot. 1. Tuck your stomach inside for about 20 percent in without holding your breath. This activates main core muscle which was hidden due to pain history. Repeat 10 reps for about 5-6 times/day 2. Standing position: Extend your back backwards without bending your neck to avoid over pressure with your hands on your hips. Gently and slowly do this exercise to push that disc back into this place. Avoid clenching your buttocks and maintain a minimum basic distance between your feet. Repeat 10 reps for 6 times/day 3. Lie on your back and lift your hips off the bed with your hands by your side. This is a bridege-like exercise in sections. I.e. Lift your hips first followed by stomach followed by chest up in a slow and controlled manner till the point of pain. If you feel better and back pain level goes down then kindly keep going and repeat 10 reps for 5 times/day. ** Exercise ball: Try to sit on a ball with a good core balance (tuck tummy in) and legs apart as per the requirement. Kindly do exercise no 1** (tummy tuck) while sitting on it and move your pelvis/hip forwards and backwards without moving any other PART OF YOUR BACK, CHEST OR STOMACH- (LIKE A CAT AND CAMEL) ** If pain arises from back or anywhere else then stop the exercise immediately and lie down on your back with 2 pillows under your knees to relax your tight muscle behind the thighs which often pulls out leading to back pain** Kindly perform these exercises and update me further regarding your pain status. Double check with ball exercise in front of mirror to avoid mistakes and feel free to ask any queries. Take care, Thank you.

You may have fungal infection. Fungal infections of skin may be tinea, candidal and many more. Most common fungal infection is tinea also called as ring worm. This needs treatment with oral and topical antifungals. Period of treatment varies from patient to patient depending on the type of response. It may be weeks or months. Expecting cure in few days and running from one doctor to another will cause you more harm than good. Be patient and stick to one doctor. Make sure you are consulting a qualified dermatologist. You can even consult online with pictures.

My 16 days old baby experiencing stomach upset, frequent episode of potty and vomiting. Please help.

MRCPCH (London), DNB Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Mumbai
My 16 days old baby experiencing stomach upset, frequent episode of potty and vomiting. Please help.
Newborns pass potty 12-15 times per day and that is absolutely normal for them. Taking out some milk (5-8 ml) after each feed, is also considered normal. Other normal things for babies are sneezing and hiccups almost 20 times per day. Sleeping for 22 hours a day and more awake time during night time. Whenever doubt comes in your mind make a note on mobile or on paper and when you visit your paediatrician, clear all of them.

Pollution - Are We At Increasing Risk Of Cancer?

MD - Radiotherapy
Oncologist, Vadodara
Pollution - Are We At Increasing Risk Of Cancer?

Cancer today is not as rare as it once was. Today, cancer affects the young and old alike. One of the reasons for this is the pollution in particular air and water pollution that we are exposed to on daily basis.
The air we breathe in today is a mixture of smoke, particulate matter and noxious gases that causes great harm to our bodies. Amongst these, particulate matter that is smaller than 2.5 millionths of a metre is the worst.

These particle matters are emitted into the air from car exhausts, industrial exhausts, coal fires, wood stoves etc. While the body’s natural defences help keep larger particle matter out of the system by sneezing or coughing it out, smaller particle matter enters the body easily. These then get trapped in the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Particle matter has in particular been linked to increasing number of lung cancer cases. Apart from lung cancer, coal tar particle matter has been linked to bladder cancer, soot to oesophageal cancer and benzene and other pesticides to leukaemia.

Radon is another source of air pollution that is emitted from the ground. In some cases, radon can also be emitted through the water. As this gas decays, it releases tiny particles that when inhaled bombard the lung cells with radiation that can cause radiation. Smoking can worsen this effect and increase a person’s risk of suffering from lung cancer. Both first-hand and second-hand smoking have also been linked to breast cancer. Apart from trying to reduce emissions to lower air pollution, it is also important to clean filets of air conditions, etc. regularly to lower indoor air pollution. Preventing the smoking of tobacco in public spaces can also help improve air quality.

All pollutants emitted by us eventually find their way into the water we drink. Even if you are not drinking contaminated water, merely, showering or swimming in contaminated water can make your body more vulnerable to the carcinogens in it. Common water pollutants include arsenic, hazardous waste, animal waste, radon, chemicals and asbestos. Drinking water with concentrated amounts of arsenic has been linked to cancer of the lungs, liver, kidney and bladder while the chlorine used to treat drinking water increases the risk of bladder and rectal cancer.

To reduce the risks of cancer caused by polluted water, it is essential to reduce disinfectant by products by keeping water treatment facilities updated and promote green chemistry and alternative assessments to reduce pollution as a whole.

What Are The Causes And Symptoms Of Epilepsy?

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, MD - General Medicine, DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Faridabad
What Are The Causes And Symptoms Of Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disease which is characterised by recurring epileptic seizures. These seizures can be brief or can persist for prolonged periods. Vigorous episodes which last long can result in physical injuries such as broken bones. Mention that 6th February is International epilepsy day.

Causes of Epilepsy
The cause of this condition isn’t very evident; however, most medical practitioners attribute epileptic seizures to brain injury, tumours, infections in the brain or birth defects. Some doctors believe that epilepsy is caused due to genetic mutations and is an outcome of abnormal activity of cells in the brain. Other causes for this condition can be alcohol or narcotics withdrawal and electrolyte problems.

Symptoms

  1. Repeated seizures
  2. Impaired memory
  3. Bouts of fainting
  4. Short spans of blackout
  5. Sudden bouts of blinking and chewing
  6. Panic
  7. Inappropriate repetitive movements

Types of Seizures
A seizure, also known as fit, is usually a brief episode characterised by uncontrollable jerking movement and loss of awareness due to abnormal neuronal activity in your brain. A collective occurrence of these seizures causes epilepsy.

There are three types of seizures an epileptic person usually encounters.

  1. Idiopathic: This kind of seizure has no apparent cause
  2. Cryptogenic: The doctors believe that there is a cause for the seizure but cannot detect it
  3. Symptomatic: These seizures occur due to a reason.

Treatments

  1. Medication: Medication is the most common treatment in case of epilepsy. Drugs taken on a regular basis can stop the seizure partially. But in very severe cases, they seem to have no effect at all.
  2. Surgery: For symptomatic seizures which are caused due to abnormal brain function, surgery can be a way to get rid of seizures. In some minor cases, nerve stimulation in the brain and special diets can be prescribed to control the epileptic seizures.

Five facts about epilepsy you need to know:

  • Epilepsy is not psychosis or madness and can be treated easily
  • Popular celebraties with epilepsy include Aristotle, Alfred Nobel, Alexander the great, Sir Isaacs Newton, Martin Luther and Julius Caesar etc.
  • Woman with epilepsy can have a normal pregnancy
  • Newer medicines for epilepsy are effective and very safe
  • Surgery can cure epilepsy in some patients.
